Virginia Noland Wilson Claypool, 78, of Sugar Grove, Ill., died Friday, Aug. 27, 2010 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease and while under the care of Tower Hill Healthcare Center in South Elgin, Ill., and Passages Hospice. She was born in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Lula and Amon Noland. At age 12, she was adopted by the family of the late Hal and Eunice Wilson. She attended Spencer High School and finished in the top of her class. She was voted most popular and most likely to succeed by her classmates. After graduation, she attended Aurora College, Aurora, Ill., where she studied education and worked part-time at All Steel in Montgomery, Ill. During that time, she met her future husband. After graduation, she taught English at Community High School in Erie, Ill., and at Franklin Junior High in Aurora. She was married in 1957 in Aurora. She worked as an admissions counselor at Aurora College and later served a term as president of the alumni association. She attended Northern Illinois University and earned a master’s degree in education. She is survived by her husband, James Claypool of Sugar Grove; a son, Mary Claypool of Sugar Grove; a daughter, Lisa Claypool Allen of Evanston, Ill., brothers, Bill Noland, Jack Stewart and Harley Stewart; sisters, Helen Myers and Dona Lynn MacMurdy; three grandsons and two granddaughters. In addition to her birth parents and adopted parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Eugene Hornbeck and Warren Noland. Service was Wednesday at Healy Chapel, Aurora. Paul James Hess, 88, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkersburg. He was born in Wirt County, a son of the late Charles and Floda Hess. He was a former member of North Parkersburg Baptist Church and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps 69th Repair Squadron Flying Tigers. He was employed as a production manager for the Union Insulating Company for 40 years. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ina Marjorie Hess; daughters, Carol A. Coffey of Colorado Springs, Colo., Elizabeth J. Schaffer of Parkersburg, Mary K. Dawson of Roswell, Ga., and Paula Doerr of Elkins; sisters, Irlinne Davis and Jean Hess, both of Elizabeth; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was born at Valley Fork, a son of the late Ray and Dorotha Janet Hanshaw Wilmoth. He was retired from Owens-Illinois Inc. and was a member of Highlawn Church of Christ, Huntington. He is survived by his wife, Bernice King Palmer Wilmoth; daughters, Debby Davidson of Huntington, Lisa Hosey of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Susan Hager of Proctorville; brothers, Ray J. Bernice Ruth Hall Matheney, 84, of Newton, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2010. She was born at Beech, a daughter of the late Lee and Ocie Bailey Hall. She was a homemaker and retired cook at Newton Grade School. She also had worked at Firestone in Akron, Ohio. She was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, Elana. She is survived by sons, David and Terry, both of Newton; sisters, Sylvia Craddock of Spencer, Wanda Houchin of Arnoldsburg and Norma Starcher of Painesville, Ohio; brothers, Darrell Hall of Arnoldsburg and Paul Hall of Reedy; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Carol Brent Anderson, 67, of Ripley, formerly of Louisville, Ky., died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010 at her home after an extended illness. She was a daughter of Lola Mae Hill of Louisville and the late Mitchell Hill. She was a Christian. She was a homemaker and worked several jobs outside of her home, most recently as an accountant. Leona Belle Starcher, 57, of Paducah, Ky., died Monday, Aug. 16, 2010 at Lourdes Hospital, Paducah, after an extended illness. She was born at Liverpool, a daughter of the late Eugene Rosco and Belle Delaney Bise. She formerly worked at Kellwood Company and was a caregiver to the elderly. She is survived by daughters, Tabatha Starcher of Indianapolis and Samantha Walker of Georgetown, Ky.; sisters, Virginia Eagle and Roberta Bise, both of Liverpool, and Wanda Miller of Spencer; and two grandchildren. He was born at Arnoldsburg, a son of the late Earl C. and Ethel Stalnaker Sturm. He was a retired 50-year employee of Willard C. Starcher, Spencer. He was a member of Moriah Lodge No. 38, AF&AM, Spencer; Jackson Chapter No. 48, R.A.M., Ravenswood; and the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Valley of Parkersburg. He attended Calhoun County High School and Stoney Point New Hope Community Church, Arnoldsburg. He was also a Navy veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Margaret A. Marshall Sturm, whom he married in 1950; children, Patricia A. Walker, Denver H. Sturm and Vickie L. Bowen, all of Spencer, and Barbara J. Karen Ann Bourne Burch, 48, of Nicut, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010 at her home. She was born in Gassaway, a daughter of Betty Helmick Bourne and the late Ronzel Paul Bourne. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her children, Alicia Nicholas, James Houchin Jr. and Miranda Nelson; brother, Kenneth Bourne; sister, Krystal Hardway; five grandchildren, three nieces and five nephews. Burial was in Metz Cemetery, Nicut. Verda “Verdie” Bush, 88, of Millstone, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010 at Roane General Hospital. She was born at Elana, a daughter of the late R.B. and Alice Griffin. She was raised in the family’s one-room log house at Cottrell Town near Oka. She married Paul “Pete” Bush, who began his teaching career in one-room schools in the southern end of Calhoun County in the 1930s and boarded with her family in their shop above the cellar house, in 1941. She worked in a factory during World War II. She settled at Millstone in the 1950s. Her interests included raising Christmas trees. She was involved in family gatherings, cooking and baking. She was a homemaker and active in various community organizations. She was a member of West Fork Community Action, Albert’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Arnoldsburg Homemaker’s Club and W.Va. Molasses Festival Association. She supported Arnoldsburg PTO and 4-H Club. She is survived by brothers, Ralph Griffin of Burning Springs, Glenn Griffin of Manchester, Ohio, and Buford “Boots” Griffin of Canal Fulton, Ohio; sisters, Donna Chambers of Jeffersonville, Ind., and Eloise Wayne of Louisville, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.
