Otmer Ray Elmore, 73, of Looneyville died Friday, June 26, 2009 at his home. He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Joseph Otmer and Faye Thurman Harold Elmore. He was a retired employee of Pennzoil and a member of Linden Lodge No. 83 AF&AM. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and his dogs. He is survived by a daughter, Robin Bailey of Newton; a son Joseph Ray Elmore of Newton; a sister, Sharon Drake of Rockport; and an aunt, Susie Boggs of Cocoa, Fla. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ashlee Jo Elmore. Service was Monday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne McGlothlin officiating. Burial with Masonic graveside rites was in Clover Cemetery. Emma L. Rogers, 76, of Newton died Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the home of her daughter, Connie. She was formerly a sweater factory seamstress and grocery store clerk. She was an avid reader, a gardener and quilter. She is survived by her children, Connie Looney of Newton, Darlena Reynolds of Charleston, Arthur “A.J.” Rogers Jr. and Henry Rogers, both of Craigsville, Brenda Brown of Sissonville and John Paul Rogers of Pinch; sisters, Mary Moats, Desta Norris and Letha Cantrell; special niece Linda Braley; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Arthur L. Rogers, formerly of Clay County. Burial was Sunday at Gandeeville Cemetery, with her son-in-law, Bill Reynolds, officiating. He was a son of JoAnn Price of Spencer and the late O.L. “Bill” Starcher. He was employed by the W.Va. Division of Highways until health problems arose. He was an avid WVU sports fan. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his sister, Doris Selko; aunts, Joretta Foster, Phyllis Hudson, Lina Fetty and Wilma Heller; uncle, Frank Spiker; nieces, Nikki and Amanda; and extended family including Bruce Parsons and Aaron Cottle. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandparents; uncles, Rex, Bernard, Alvin and Willard Starcher; and aunts, Earliss Starcher, Goldie Young, Opal Stout and Ruth Simons. Service was Sunday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home. Burial was in the Starcher Cemetery, Calhoun County. Lowell Claude Weekley, 76, of Nicut died Wednesday, June 24, 2009. He was a Christian. He is survived by daughters, Chris Merchant of St. Albans, Laurel Johnson of St. Louis; a son, David Weekley of Elizabeth; four brothers, Paul Weekley of Knoxville, Tenn., Bill Weekley of Wooster, Ohio, Carroll Weekley of Parkersburg and Larry Cottrell of Orma; three sisters, Sharon Hill of Limeboro, Md., Geneva Lucas of Kingman, Ariz., and Barbara Travis of Worthington; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. In addition to his parents, Fred Weekley, Opal Weekley and Lear Weekley, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Thompson Weekley; a son, Dale Weekley; a sister, Glenna Pilgrim; two brothers, Robert Weekley and Loy Weekley; and a grandson. J.W. “Bus” White, 77, of Advent, formerly of Tariff, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at Eldercare of West Virginia, Ripley. He was born at Tariff, a son of the late John W. and Alice Keen White. He was a retired farmer and owner of White and Keaton Logging. He was a member of Linden Lodge No. 83 AF&AM for more than 50 years and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He is survived by three daughters, one sister and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vada Keaton White; one son; one daughter and several brothers and sisters. Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Daniel R. “Danny” Whited officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Published June 25, 2009 Don O. McNutt, 54, of Gandeeville, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, after a short illness. He was born in Zanesville, Ohio, a son of Don R. and Patty L. Ashcraft McNutt of Blue Rock, Ohio. He was the owner of the Single-Arm Farm, Gandeeville. He was a member of Roane County Farm Bureau, the Burley Tobacco Council and the board of directors of the Southern States Cooperative. He was a graduate of Cal State University, Fresno, with a B.S. in Agricultural Business. He was also an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, a disabled American veteran and a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Ripley. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Patricia McNutt of Gandeeville; two daughters, Deana Miller of Spencer and Kellen McNutt of Morgantown; a son, Patrick McNutt of Lexington, Ky.; three brothers, Reed McNutt of Tryon, N.C., Patrick McNutt of Watertown, N.Y., and Michael McNutt of New Concord, Ohio; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Koehler. Service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, with Rev. Charles Hicks officiating. Delores Jean Smith, 73, of Parkersburg died Friday, June 19, 2009 after an extended illness. She was born in Spencer, a daughter of the late Ferd and Alice McCune. She was a member of 8th Avenue Baptist Gospel Temple. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Doyle Duane Smith of Parkersburg; three sons, David Starcher of Spencer, Rodney Starcher of Washington and Randy Smith of Parkersburg; four daughters, Diana Kersey of Walker, Jeanne Hughes and Christi Merrill, both of Slate Creek, and Jeannette Ketterman of Washington; a step-daughter, Debbie Goodwin of Florida; a step-son, Mike Smith of Washington; two sisters, Lella Mae Buckabee and Lona Logan; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a former husband, Basil Starcher; two brothers, Orville and Oley McCune; and two sisters, Berdele Webb and Edith Miller. Service was Monday at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Parkersburg. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens. Ruth Eloise Whited Taylor, 89, of Lynchburg, Va., died Saturday, May 30, 2009 at her home. She was born at Walton, a daughter of Walter Rybrum and Ethel Raines Whited. She was the last remaining survivor of the Stephen and Henrietta Cunningham Taylor family, outliving their 10 children and spouses. She was the widow of Chad Ray Taylor after 63 years of marriage. She moved to North Carolina in 1956. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, Washington, N.C., until relocating in April 2003 to Lynchburg to live with her daughter, Sandra Taylor Day. She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Day of Lynchburg and Patricia Taylor; one sister, Dorothy Whited Atkins of Washington; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Service was June 3 at First Baptist Church, Washington with Dr. Jimmy Moore; Rev. Mark Grooms; Rev. Stephen Atkins, nephew of the deceased; and Rev. Jim Phillips, nephew of the deceased, officiating. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery.
William “Bill” P. Chambers, 81, of Jeffersonville, Ind., died Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at the University of Louisville Hospital. He was born in Spencer, a son of the late Harry and Della Chambers. He graduated from Ahrens High School in Louisville, Ky., and was retired from Ashland Oil Company. He was an active member of Eastern Heights Baptist Church. His hobbies included fishing and traveling, and he was also proficient at manual repairs. He was an Air Force veteran. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Donna Chambers of Jeffersonville; a son, Gary Chambers of Cottage Grove, Minn.; a daughter, Lynn Hoback of Jeffersonville; an adopted sister, Lillian Robertson of Jeffersonville; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, William Glynn Chambers; and a brother, Jack Chambers. Service was Friday at Scott Funeral Home’s North Chapel, Jeffersonville. Burial was in Walnut Ridge Cemetery. Harold Richard Estep, 77, of Looneyville, died Saturday, June 13, 2009 at Heartland of Charleston. He was born at Dry Branch, a son of the late Gilbert and Edna Mae Combs Estep. He enlisted in the Army in 1949 at the age of 17 and went to basic training at Fort Knox, Ky., in the 13th Armored Infantry Battalion. He joined B Battery, 38th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division in 1950, before going to Korea. He landed in Pusan on Aug. 19, 1950, went into combat on Aug. 21 and his unit was wiped out Nov. 30. He was captured Dec. 1 in or around Somindong, North Korea and was held in some caves for about a week, then was moved to a mining camp. He left the mining camp, was moved to other camps, and was not released until Sept. 2, 1953. He celebrated three birthdays in POW camps. He was discharged at Fort Meade, Md., in 1953. He re-enlisted in 1954 and went back to Fort Knox, then to Ansbach, Germany with the 750th Field Artillery Battalion. He was discharged again in 1957. He retired from Laketon Refining, Ind., moved to Roane County and attended several area churches. He is survived by five daughters, Peggy Newcomer of Wabash, Ind., Susan Bashore of Warsaw, Ind., Tracy Estep and TyAnn Estep, both of North Manchester, Ind., and Donna Krider of South Whitley, Ind.; one son, Roy Estep of Warsaw; three sisters, Dorothy Willis of Ohio, Betty Tackett of North Carolina and Kay McCubbin of Virginia; 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, four sisters and a brother. Service was Wednesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, with Rev. Danny Whited officiating. Burial was in Montgomery Memorial Park, London, with military graveside honors. John Dean Nicholson, 45, of Walton, died Monday, June 8, 2009 at his residence. He was born in Cleveland, a son of Hilden Dean Nicholson of Spencer and Evelyn Nicholson of West Hamlin. He was a former deputy sheriff in Calhoun County and had formerly served as police chief in Grantsville and Clendenin. He worked for Brown and Root in Kuwait and received several awards. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a daughter, Makala Nicholson of Clendenin; two sisters, Yvonne Wright of Spencer and Kimberly Shafer of Walton; two half-brothers, Erik Shafer of Walton and Dale Shafer of Parma, Ohio. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sierra Faith Nicholson, and his grandparents, Lorraine Nicholson, formerly of Spencer, and Betty and Keith Wolfe, formerly of Walton. Service was Saturday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home. Burial was in Keith Wolfe Cemetery, Walton. Ivan Leon “Butch” Starcher, 64, of Spencer, died Sunday, June 14, 2009 in Spencer after an extended illness. He was born in Spencer, a son of the late Ivan Leon and Joy Donahue Starcher. He had formerly worked in Canton, Ohio, and was disabled. He is survived by a sister, Sharon Bowers of Spencer. He was cremated and his ashes will be buried later in Clover Cemetery. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Romie Lacy Hersman, 72, of Spencer, died Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Roane General Hospital after an extended illness. He was a son of the late Walter T. and Theora “Flo” Hersman. He was retired from Kellwood Company after 40 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a quartermaster for the VFW. He was a member of Spencer Lions Club and St. John’s United Methodist Church. His hobbies included bowling with friends. He is survived by his wife, Dotty Lou Carpenter Hersman; three sons, Romie Lacy Hersman Jr. of Greenwood, Ind., Rodney Taylor Hersman of Hickory, N.C., and Robert Lynn Hersman of Spencer; a brother, Walter C. Hersman of Sanford; and four grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas C. Hersman. Service was Saturday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home. James Borman Satterfield, 59, of Weston, died Friday, May 29, 2009 at his residence after an extended illness. He was born in Cleveland, a son of the late Nelson Columbus Satterfield Sr. and Gladys Irene Alton Satterfield. He was a painter involved in auto body repair. He attended Grace Fellowship Church and possessed an affinity for music. His hobbies included fishing. He is survived by a daughter, Jamie Burke of Pace, Fla.; a son, Chuck Satterfield of Norfolk, Va.; three brothers, Nelson Satterfield Jr. of West Fork, Ariz., Arthur Leroy Satterfield of Olathe, Kan., and Richard Satterfield of Ravenna, Ohio; a sister, Ardith Conrad of Ravenna; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Marcia Joan Satterfield. Service was June 2 at Grace Fellowship Church with Pastor Bill Hunt officiating. The body was cremated.
