Virgil Ray Beckett

Virgil Ray Beckett, 54, of Millstone, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010 at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Systems, Grantsville.
He was born in Braxton County, a son of the late Albert and Lizzie Bell Nutter Beckett.
He is survived by four sisters, Margaret Rush of Arnoldsburg, Evelyn Beckett of Orma, Ruth Rhodes of Mt. Zion and Barbara Sue Taylor of Mt. Airy, N.C.; a brother, Danny Beckett of Orma; his step-mother, Janice Beckett of Spencer; several step-brothers, step-sisters, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Missouri K. Nicholas; and two infant sisters.
Service was Tuesday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Jacob Hersman officiating. Burial was in Poling-Marks Cemetery, Millstone.

Debra Kay Bowers

Debra Kay Bowers, 52, of Spencer, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010 at her home.
She was born in Akron, Ohio, a daughter of the late Donald and Virginia Coe Jones. She was a Spencer High School graduate and worked as a cook at the White Oak Restaurant.
She is survived by her husband, Gary Bowers; a sister, Karen Jones of Spencer; and a nephew, Phillip Lawrence.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Lawrence.
The body was cremated and there will be no service. Burial of the ashes will take place later at Clover Cemetery. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ronald S. ‘Jake’ Carper

Ronald S. “Jake” Carper, 65, of Left Hand, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, following a battle with cancer.
He was born at Amma, a son of the late Roy Stratton and Georgia Faye Reynolds Carper. He was a retired pipeline welder. He was an Army veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division, Vietnam era, and a member of the American Legion. He was also a horseman.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys McQuain Carper of Left Hand; two daughters, Terri L. Marinez of Carlsbad, Calif., and Nicki L. Slaughter of Denver; two sisters, Rhonda Pauley McClain and Donna Conley, both of Amma; a brother, Roger Carper of Amma; a special cousin and friend, Carol Fisher of Spencer; a granddaughter and seven grandsons.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Likiats; and an infant brother, Roy Kent Carper.
Service was Sunday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, with Rev. Michael F. “Mike” King officiating. Burial, with military graveside rites, was in Carper Cemetery, Amma.

Gale Millerx

Gale Miller, 99, of Stumptown, died Monday, Jan. 25, 2010 at his home after an extended illness.
He was born at Shock, the eldest son of Grover C. and Oe Minney Miller. He was an elementary school teacher. After attaining a degree in elementary education from Glenville State College, he taught in Gilmer County for 24 years at Oak Grove, Perkins, Tanner #4, Rosedale and Normantown Grade before retiring in 1973.
He was a gospel preacher and preached at Shock, Locust Knob, Millstone, Glenville, Spencer, Gassaway, Howesville, Little Hocking, Ohio; and Sarnia, Canada. He authored three books of sermon outlines and a commentary on The Revelation.
He taught classes on shaped note music. He wrote poetry about people, as well as W.Va. nature and wildlife. He was a member of Shock Church of Christ and was baptized in 1938. He was a song leader, Bible teacher, preacher and elder. He also served as maintenance man and helped with the upkeep and improvements to the building.
He built several houses and helped build Rosedale gym. He worked on the WPA as a stone mason, helped to build the wall in front of the administration building at Glenville State College. He was a steelworker for three years in the Naval Ordinance Plant in Charleston during World War II. He also had experience working in timber, on a pipeline, on the public highway, operating a grist mill, blacksmithing, beekeeping, making molasses and making split bottom chairs.
He is survived by two sons, Gene H. of Shock and Marvin of Spencer; two daughters, Yvonne Morrison of Stumptown and Carolyn Norman of Aurora, Ohio; a sister, Luanne Conrad of Elyria, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Virginia Ruth Wolfe, with whom he traveled extensively including to several foreign countries; eight brothers, Orbert, Obert, David, Hurley Bon, Colby, Corley, Rae and Arlyn Bly; four sisters, Minnie, Carrie, Jessie and Mae; a grandchild and a great-grandchild.
Service was Saturday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Evangelist Tom Miller officiating. Burial was in Miller Cemetery, Shock.

Mary Louise Rardon

Mary Louise Rardon, 85, of Indianapolis, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010.
She was born at Tariff, a daughter of the late J.O. and Mary Jane Elmore. She was a graduate of Spencer High School, an alumnus of West Virginia University and a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She received her MA in education from Butler University. She served as head of Washington High School Home Economics Department for 30 years. She was director of a vocational foods program. She also worked part-time as a dietician at Methodist Hospital. After her retirement, she was a volunteer at Indianapolis Children’s Museum and the Conner Prairie Gift Shop. Her interests included crossword puzzles, watching birds and sports, traveling extensively with Ambassadair and Elderhostel and learning through classes with OASIS. She was a Colts fan.
She is survived by three children, Joan L. Fairlie, Dr. David P. Rardon and Kathryn A. Dawe; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 1960, Ralph A. Rardon.
Service was Saturday, Jan. 23 at Broad Ripple United Methodist Church, Indianapolis. A graveside service will take place at Clover Cemetery on Tuesday, Feb. 9. Kenneth Glenn Boggs

Kenneth Glenn Boggs, 44, of Spencer, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010 at his home.
He was born at Looneyville, a son of Dottie Blosser Boggs of Left Hand and the late Virgil Boggs. He helped his brothers with their lawn mowing and weed trimming business during summer. His interests included hunting and fishing.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sons, Virgil Starcher of Colorado and Travis Conley of Clendenin; two brothers, Eddie and Art Boggs, both of Left Hand; his grandfather, Joe Wilson of Spencer; several aunts, uncles, great-aunts and great-uncles.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Franklin Boggs.
Service was Sunday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, with Rev. Richard Webb officiating. Burial was in Epling Chapel Cemetery, Looneyville.

Mary McIntosh Davis

Mary McIntosh Davis, 78, of Morgantown, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010.
She was born in Parkersburg, a daughter of the late Frederick F. Jr. and Johnnie Mae O’Brien McIntosh of Spencer.
After graduating from Penn Hall Preparatory School in 1949, she attended West Virginia University, where she was a member of Chi Omega social sorority. She received an A.B. degree in English and education in 1953. She then taught elementary school in West Palm Beach, Fla., for one year before entering the Arts Students League in New York, N.Y., where she studied under print maker, Will Barnett. While living in New York, she married Lloyd Davis of Charleston and began teaching at California Avenue Elementary in Hempstead, N.Y.
After moving to Morgantown in 1959 she was active in the League of Women Voters and she opened an art gallery on Pleasant Street. She began teaching kindergarten at Wesley United Methodist Church in 1967. When kindergarten became part of the public school curriculum, she taught at Central Elementary School.
While at Central, she taught international students, which led to her decision to pursue a Fulbright Teaching Exchange. In 1980, she was the first teacher from the Monongalia County school system to be awarded a Fulbright. The Fulbright took her to Scotland in 1980, where she served as the teaching principal of Slammanan Nursery School in the Central Region.
 During her long career, she shared her expertise in early childhood education by mentoring student teachers from WVU, traveling to various conferences to speak, publishing articles and becoming part of the People to People Educator’s delegation to Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1996. She retired in 2001 from Mountain View Elementary.
 Throughout her professional life, she was an advocate for young children, for which she received many honors and awards including being inducted into the Association of Childhood Education International Hall of Excellence in 1992, the West Virginia Association for Young Children Outstanding Member in 1997, and in 2005 she was named one of Morgantown’s 100 most influential people.
 Following her retirement, she continued to devote time and resources to projects geared toward young children such as the development of The Morgantown Fun Factory, where she served on the board of directors and was a volunteer until her health declined.
She is survived by three children, David Davis of Morgantown, Owen Davis of Frederick, Md., and Jessica Owens of Hurst, Texas; her brother, Frederick F. McIntosh III of Old Tappan, N.J.; and four grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Diane McIntosh Peyton of Wheeling.

Joseph Payne

Joseph Payne, 77, of Walton, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010 at his home.
He was born at Advent in Jackson County, a son of the late Hurley and Nancy Gae Davis Payne. He was a retired carpenter and bridge builder for Orders Construction, St. Albans, and a member of the United Steelworkers, Local 14614, South Charleston.
He is survived by a son, Burton W. Payne of Walton; a daughter, Sheila Crihfield of Clendenin; two sisters, Patty Hersman of Gandeeville and Marie Cobb of Ravenswood; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie Parsons Payne in 2000; a brother, George Payne; and three sisters, Orpha Parsons, Betty Randolph and Katie Shaffer.

Donzel Wesley Webb

Donzel Wesley Webb, 79, of Spencer, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010 at Webb’s Tender Care Home, Spencer.
He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Dale and Iva Mae Rhodes Webb. He worked in construction and was a lifelong heavy equipment operator. He was a Marine Corps veteran. His interests included car racing.
He is survived by a daughter, Regina Norris of St. Augustine, Fla; a sister, Linda Marie Bullard of Spencer; three brothers, Jerry Webb of Reedy and Bobby and Roy Webb, both of Spencer; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lila Smith Webb.
Service was Sunday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, with Bill Walton officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery, Grantsville.

Pauline W. Larch

Pauline W. Larch, 89, of Newark, Ohio, died Friday, Jan. 15, 2010.
She was born at Walton, a daughter of the late Roma and Ora Harper Walker. She graduated from Walton High School, raised her family in St. Albans and lived in Cross Lanes before moving to Ohio. She attended Charleston Business College and retired after 20 years of service with the W.Va. State Health Dept. She was a member of Bible Center Church, Charleston, and First Baptist Church, Heath, Ohio. She was involved in Young at Heart and Friends Forever.
She is survived by three daughters, Christena Walsh of Heath, Cheryl Lilly of Newport News, Va., and Cara Nightengale of Marengo, Ohio; two sisters, Annilee Conley of Spencer and Lucille Miller of Charleston; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Arthur H. Larch.
Service was Wednesday at Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home, Newark, with Pastor Wally McLaughlin officiating. Burial was in Newark Memorial Gardens. Betty Lou Sinnett

Betty Lou Sinnett, 84, of Spencer, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 at Roane General Hospital.
She was born in Akron, Ohio, a daughter of the late Jacob G. “Jack” and Alma Lillian Mayers Widowsky. She was a homemaker and attended Spencer Church of the Nazarene.
She is survived by a son, David Lambert of Akron; a grandson, and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome P. “Jerry” Sinnett in 2003.
Service was Tuesday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, with Pastors Tom Fletcher and Russell Stump officiating. Burial was in Swank Cemetery, Spencer.

Doris Jean Taylor

Doris Jean Taylor, 74, of Clay, died Friday, Jan. 15, 2010 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.
She was born in Clay County, a daughter of the late Freeman and Nina Duffield. She was a member of Alta Church of God, Alta, and a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. Arnold Taylor; two sons, Curt Dancey of Akron, Ohio, and Charles Wyant of Clay; four step-sons, Denzil Taylor, Dexter Taylor, Ronnie Taylor and Richard Taylor, all of Spencer; a brother, Ford Duffield of Akron; a sister, Deloris Duffield of Akron; 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Service was Wednesday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Donald Dawson and Rev. Paul Young officiating. Burial was in McLaughlin Cemetery, Duck.

O. Lee Williams

O. Lee Williams, 82, of Grace Community near Reedy, died Friday, Jan. 15, 2010 at Roane General Hospital.
He was born in Wirt County, a son of the late Marcellus and Daisy Ice Williams. He was retired from Kaiser Aluminum with 25 years of service and formerly worked at Libby Owens in Parkersburg. He was a farmer and a member of the Farm Bureau. He was a Christian, a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of American Legion Post #21.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carrie Criner Williams; two daughters, Sharon Butler of Reedy and Cheryl Summerfield of Spencer; a sister, Laura Starcher of Parkersburg; a half-sister, Iva Trickett of Reedy; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Service was Tuesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, with Rev. Larry Greathouse and Rev. Russell Stump officiating. Burial, with military graveside rites, was in Spencer Memorial Cemetery.

Kenneth H. Stewart

Kenneth Hibbitts Stewart, 88, of Surprise, Ariz., formerly of Spencer, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010 at his home.
He was born at Bucyrus, Ohio, a son of the late Francis and Nina Oberlander Stewart. He was a retired district manager of Prudential Insurance Company, former co-owner of Queen Bee Restaurant and Kwik Shop in Spencer and former member and past president of Roane County Commission from January 1983 until December 1988. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of W.Va. American Legion Post 21. He was a member of Roane County Country Club. His interests included golf and bowling.
He is survived by a daughter, Charlene L. Lockitski of Goodyear, Ariz.; two sons, Ronald K. Stewart of Spencer and Dr. James A. Stewart of Portsmouth, Va.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Veronica Stewart.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Saturday, Feb. 13 at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, with Rev. Thomas Chacko as celebrant. Burial, with military graveside rites, will be in Eventide Cemetery. Friends may call at John H. Donald R. Coplin

Donald R. Coplin, 79, of Palestine, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010 at Jackson General Hospital, Ripley, after an extended illness.
He was born in Wirt County, a son of the late Rolla and Gertrude Bibbee Coplin. He was a 1949 graduate of Wirt County High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He retired from DuPont after several years of service. He was a former member of the Jr. Lodge, United American Mechanics of Palestine. He was a member of Wirt County EMS since 1975. His interests included woodworking, farming and hunting. He was a Christian.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Coplin; two daughters, Jan Roush of Millwood and Rhonda Tucker of Spencer; two step-sons, Douglas Merical and Willard Merical, both of Millwood; two brothers, Lloyd Coplin of North Canton, Ohio, and Dearman Coplin of Elizabeth; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, several step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Patsy Sheppard Coplin; and two brothers, William and Okay Coplin.
Service was Wednesday at Matheny Whited Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with Rev. Delmas Stutler and Rev. Robert Watkins officiating. Burial was in Palestine Cemetery, Thorn Addition.

Cyrus. A. Freeman

Cyrus A. Freeman, 61, of Brooklyn, Ohio, died Friday, Jan. 8, 2010 at his home.
He was born in Cleveland, a son of the late Robert and Minnie Helper Freeman. He was a truck driver and an Army veteran.
He is survived by a son, Cyrus A. Freeman Jr.; two daughters, Dorine Foster and Beth Jonas; his companion, Carol Bodkin; an aunt and four grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Prosowski Freeman.
Service was Tuesday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, with Rev. Daniel R. “Danny” Whited officiating. Burial was in Hubbard Cemetery, Walton.

Geneva E. Bennett Husk

Geneva Ellen Bennett Husk, 92, of Grantsville, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010 at Minnie Hamilton Health System, Grantsville.
She was born in Grantsville, a daughter of the late Elza and Mary Jane Harris Bennett. She worked for W.B. Gibson of Grantsville for 38 years.
She is survived by her son, Ray Wade of Akron, Ohio; a daughter, Wilma Jane Husk Bell; a step-son, Howard Dale Husk of Akron; a step-daughter, Deloris McCartney Davis of East Liverpool, Ohio; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Herbert Wade; her second husband, Charles G. Buck Bell; a son, Robert Eugene Husk; a step-son, Gilbert William Husk; five sisters, Edna Husk, Geneve Collins, Pauline Hornbeck, Ivlean Richards and Elenore Mills; and three brothers, Orval Bennett, Cay Bennett and Holly Golden “Bud” Bennett.
Service is today (Thursday) at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Alfred Hickman officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Mt. Zion. Visitation will take place today at the funeral home from noon to 2 p.m.

Thelma I. Lowers

Thelma I. Lowers, 68, of Walton, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010 at her home after a short illness.
She was born at Frame, a daughter of the late Edison E. and Eva Blanche Fields Newhouse. She was a homemaker and served as a foster grandparent at Walton Elementary/Middle School. She formerly worked as a custodian, substitute mail carrier and at Norris Industries. She attended Sandy Valley Church.
She is survived by her husband, Arley Estel Lowers; two daughters, Donna Jo Morris and Paula Burgess, both of Walton; three sisters, Shirley Rucker of Frame, Helen Foreman of Akron, Ohio, and Gladys Keeten of Clendenin; four brothers, Richard, Arnold and Larry Newhouse, all of Walton, and Don Newhouse of Frame; and two grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Velma Jean Lowers; and two brothers, Harold and Dorsey Newhouse.
Service was Wednesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home. Burial was in Droddy-Canterbury Cemetery, Walton.

Nancy Trembly Miller

Nancy Trembly Miller, 95, formerly of Leroy, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 at Ravenswood Care Center, Ravenswood, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
She was born in Rosedale, a daughter of the late Dallas Delta and Ada Shock Gumm. She was a member of Noble Methodist Church for many years and later attended Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. She was a Sunday school teacher, a high school graduate and a Washington, D.C., nursing school graduate.
She owned and operated Trembly’s Grocery at Marshall for several years. Her interests included feeding and watching birds and squirrels, working with her flowers, going to church, quilting, entering quilts in quilt shows and giving quilts to her family, as well as crocheting.
She is survived by two sons, Orville Trembly of Vienna and Dallas Trembly of Millwood; two daughters, Shirley Lewis of Greenbrier, Tenn., and Zelda Eagle of Leroy; a step-son, Leonard Trembly of Leroy; two sisters, Delta Staton of Parkersburg and Velma Miller of Marietta, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, several great- and great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Gilbert Leonard Trembly; her second husband, W. Ray Miller; a sister, Lena Carpenter Banasik; a brother, Durward Gumm and two great-grandchildren.
Service was Tuesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, with Rev. Darrell Johnson officiating. The body was cremated and a private burial will take place later at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Leroy. Roscoe Lenard Moore

Roscoe Lenard Moore, 68, of Chloe, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 at CAMC General Hospital, Charleston.
He was born in Kanawha County, a son of the late Clarence and Martha Tanner Moore.
He is survived by two daughters, Melissa K. Sparks of Creston, Ohio, and Demetra D. Moore of Kansas; a sister, Thelma Carte of Chloe; a brother, Mitchell Moore of Chloe; and three grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Morris Moore; three brothers; and two sisters.
There will be no service. Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Morehead

Raymond Morehead, 81, died Monday, Jan. 4, 2010 at Mulberry Gardens Assisted Living Home, Monroe Falls, Ohio, after a short battle with cancer.
He was born in Spencer, a son of the late Dolph and Velva Niday Morehead. He attended Spencer High School and attained his GED after serving five years in the U.S. Army. He retired from Babcock and Wilcox in Barberton, Ohio, after 35 years of service. He was known in Barberton as the man who fed the swans and squirrels and helped keep Lake Anna clean.
He is survived by a brother, Frank Morehead of Mogadore, Ohio; three sisters, Emogene Bridgewater and Frances Miller, both of Spencer, and Eloise Conner of Cottageville; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Justine Jones; and four brothers, Bill, Deat, John and Bobby Morehead.
Service was Friday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, with Rev. Jackie Roberts officiating. Burial was in Egypt Ridge Cemetery, near Spencer. Memorial donations may be made to a local food pantry or favorite charity.

Carolyn Sue Reynolds

Carolyn Sue Reynolds, 65, of Spencer, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010 at her home.
She was born in Wood County, a daughter of the late Harley L. and Gladie S. Skaggs Greathouse. She worked at Kellwood Company for over 16 years. Her interests included sewing, cooking and crocheting.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, William Edward “Bill” Reynolds; a daughter, Debbie Reynolds of Reedy; a son, William Edward “Ed” Reynolds II of Spencer; two sisters, Norma Jean George and Louella Greathouse, both of Reedy; and a granddaughter.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathleen Lucille Dye and Freda Hope Greathouse; and two brothers, Roy Lee Greathouse and Harley William Greathouse.
The body was cremated. There was no service. Her ashes will be buried later in Good Hope Cemetery, Reedy. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Nadene V. Taylor

Nadene V. Taylor, 87, of Spencer, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010 at Miletree Center.
She was born in Spencer, a daughter of the late Lacy Ida Sleeth Smith. She was a co-owner of Taylor’s Upholstery and Fabric Shop, Spencer. She was a member of Love and Kindness Church, Spencer.
She is survived by a daughter, Frances Bates of Spencer; and two grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Taylor; a daughter, Ellen Virginia Taylor; a brother, Sidney Smith; four sisters, Flo Hersman, Lucille Shuman, Azelene Smith and Phyllis Smith.
Service was Sunday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, with minsters Toby Wagoner and Kathryn Truss officiating. Burial was in Hodam Chapel Cemetery, Spencer.
