Rev. Ray F. Bartlett

Rev. Ray F. Bartlett, 83, of Big Springs, died Saturday, May 10, 2008, at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center, Grantsville, following an extended illness.
He was born at Dekalb, a son of the late Rev. Nelson H. and Daisy Garton Barlett. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a prominent Baptist minister in Calhoun, Gilmer and surrounding counties for many years. He was a retired teacher at Calhoun County High School and a former Nationwide Insurance agent in Grantsville.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Fox Bartlett; a brother, Bill Bartlett of Huntington; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Starling, Eugene and Harley.
Service is Saturday at 2 p.m. at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Kenneth Heiney officiating. Visitation will be from noon Saturday until the time of the service. Burial will be in Nobe Cemetery.

Wesley S. ‘Sonny’ Brown

Wesley S. “Sonny” Brown, 66, of Wallback, died Thursday, May 8, 2008, at Braxton County Memorial Hospital, Gassaway, after a sudden illness.
He was born at Fola, a son of the late Arlon and Elsie Brown Shamblin. He was a miner who had worked at Ward’s mine, Elkhurst. He was a member of Maysel Community Church.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Brown of Wallback; five sons, Richard of Ivydale, Terry of Vinton, Va., Michael of Frazier Park, Calif., Danny of Wallback and Shaun of Rosedale; one daughter, Tammy Peck of Amma; two brothers, General Shamblin of Wallback and James Shamblin of Droop Mountain; four sisters, Annie and Dorothy Shamblin, Catherine Crofford and Susan Carr, all of Marlinton; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Eddie Shamblin; and one sister, Mary Roberts.
Service was Sunday at Maysel Community Church with Pastor Brodis Brown officiating. Burial was in Sunset Cemetery, Bickmore. John H. Taylor Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Goldie Mae Browning

Goldie Mae Lee Browning, 92, of Newton, died Sunday, May 11, 2008, at Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Big Otter.
She was born in Clay County, a daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Noe Lee. She was a homemaker and a Christian.
She is survived by two daughters, Sharlene Knight and Pauline Ward, both of Newton; four sons, Bobby G. Browning of Maysel, Willis W. and Delbert Browning, both of Cleveland; and Elmer Browning of Clover; 31 grandchildren; and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hunter Browning, in 1979; two sons, Shirley Robert and Norman William Browning; and three daughters, Doris, Dolly and Helen.
Service is 1 p.m. Friday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home. Visitation will be today (Thursday) from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hill Cemetery near Newton.

Junior Lee Collins

Junior Lee Collins, 75, of Newton, died Monday, April 28, 2008.
He was born at Clio, a son of the late Arthur G. and Melissa Godbey Collins. He was retired from Local 1353 in Charleston, was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved old cars and was a Christian.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Lillie Caroline Gandee Collins; sons, William “Bill” Collins and Joe Weiland, both of Newton; daughters Rita Jo Elkins of Uneeda and Faith Collins of Braxton County; brothers Gerald of Wallback, General and Rondal, both of Spencer, Mike, James and Leonard, all of Newton, Roger of Clay and Roy of Ohio; sisters, Betty Smith of Newton, Sylvia Wines of Parkersburg, Ann Boggess of Liverpool, Reba Starcher of Ohio, and Ruth Burdette of Sissonville; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, two brothers and two daughters.
Service was May 1 at Grannies Creek Goodwill Community Church with Rev. Michael Lynch and Rev. Joe Dawson officiating. Burial was in King-Kirkhart Cemetery, Newton.

Bobby Lee Cox

Bobby Lee Cox, 79, of Snellville, Ga., died Wednesday, May 7, 2008.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a 1947 graduate of Spencer High School and a retired welder.
He is survived by one brother, Richard of Snellville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Burl and Maysel Cox.
The body was cremated. Tom M. Wages Funeral Service, Snellville, was in charge of arrangements.

W. Frederick Craig

W. Frederick Craig, 81, of St. Albans, died Tuesday, May 13 after a brief illness.
He was born in Reedy, a son of the late Fred E. Craig and Georgia Smith Craig. He graduated from Spencer High School in 1945, W.Va. Institute of Technology in 1952 and received his master’s degree from the University of Rochester in 1968. He was a faculty member at WVIT for six years and at Rochester Institute of Technology for 31 years. He was named WVIT Alumnus of the Year in 1976 and was inducted into the West Virginia Printing Hall of Fame in 1997.
He published seven books about the history of Reedy. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a printer aboard the USS Cascade in the Pacific during World War II. In 2000, he published a book about Spencer High graduates and their World War II service. He was named “Reedy Historian” during the Reedy Centennial Celebration in 1994.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marilyn Kay; one son, Tim of Bensalem, Pa.; one daughter, Lissa of Estero, Fla.; one sister, Mary O’Dell of Spencer; one brother, Robert, of Kanawha City; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Service is Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew United Methodist Church, St. Albans. Visitation is today (Thursday) from 6-8 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrew United Methodist Church.

Maxine D. Crihfield

Maxine Dotajean Crihfield, 78, of Evans, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at Jackson General Hospital, Ripley.
She was born at Clio, a daughter of the late Albert James and Abbie Hester Reynolds Paxton. She was a homemaker, a former employee of Martini’s Sewing Factory in Ripley, a former custodian at Evans Elementary School and a former member of the Jackson General Hospital Auxiliary. She attended Evans United Methodist Church and was a member of the Church Women’s Society.
She is survived by sons, Randy Lee and Harold F. Jr., both of Evans; daughter, Joyce Waskey of Sandyville; sisters, Velma Summerfield and Doris LeMaster, both of Spencer; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold F. Crihfield; and brothers, Willis D. Paxton and John S. Paxton.
Service is 2 p.m. Friday at Casto Funeral Home, Evans, with Gary Hill officiating. Visitation will be today (Thursday) from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Jackson County Memory Gardens, Cottageville.

Sadie T. Gilbert

Sadie T. Gilbert, 75, of Walton, died Monday, May 12, 2008 at Laurel Nursing Center after a long illness.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by sons, James R. Gilbert of Walton and David A. Gilbert of Clay; daughter, Melanie Cobb of Clendenin; brothers, Denny Paxton of Walton and Rodney Paxton of Spencer; sisters, Edith Fields and Helen Moore, both of Elkview, and Barbara McClure of Spencer; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ottis and Delma Paxton; her husband, James C. Gilbert; two brothers, Leslie and Shirkey Paxton; and one sister, Faye White.
Graveside service is 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Paxton Cemetery, Walton, with Rev. Lee Swor officiating. Myers Funeral Home, Elkview, is in charge of arrangements.

Frederick W. Holland

Frederick W. Holland, 86, of Dunbar, died Monday, May 12, 2008 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, after a long illness.
He was born at Linden, a son of the late James Noah and Artie Ferrell Holland. He was a retired chemical operator with 35 years of service at Union Carbide, South Charleston. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having fought in Europe, and enjoyed fishing and camping.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Gladys “Lillian” Holland, and one son, James, of Mercer County.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Maxwell and Leland.
Service is (Thursday) at noon at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Rev. Okey B. Harless Jr. officiating. Visitation is from 10:30 a.m. today until the time of service. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.

Myrtle G. Jarvis

Myrtle G. Jarvis, 81, of Akron, Ohio, died Sunday, May 11, 2008.
She was born at Milo, a daughter of the late Neal and Darie Keith DeWeese. She retired from Goodyear after 35 years of service, was a member of Greensburg Temple Baptist Church and enjoyed the outdoors.
She is survived by sons, Dan and Michael Jarvis; one brother, Garland DeWeese; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert C. Jarvis; brothers, Coy, Gail and Hunter; and sisters, Zelma, Oma and Ona.
Service was Wednesday at Newcomer Funeral Home, Akron, with Rev. Glenn Rogers officiating. Burial was in Hillside Memorial Park.

Shirley James Siers

Shirley James Siers, 81, of Charleston, died Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at Charleston Area Medical Center.
He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late James L. and Alice Butler Siers. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He worked for Dowell Inc. for over 25 years and was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Charleston.
He is survived by two sons, Keith and Dolan; one daughter, Charlene Schuller; two sisters, Nell Jarvis and Verba King; and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Werth Siers.
Service was Saturday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Dennis Klemash officiating. Burial was in Minnora Cemetery. Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, was in charge of arrangements.

Jack L. White

Jack L. White, 73, of Sistersville, died Thursday, May 8, 2008 at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.
He was born in Sistersville, a son of the late Aubrey Leonard White and Irene Snyder White. He attended schools in Spencer and Friendly and graduated from Mannington High School in 1953. He retired from Ormet Corp. after 43 years of service and was an avid WVU sports fan.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and attended First Baptist Church in Sistersville. He was a charter member of the Sistersville Jaycees, a member of the Sistersville Elks Lodge, was named “Sports Fan of the Year” for Sistersville High School in 1975 and a volunteer for the Man-to-Man prostate cancer program.
He is survived by his wife, Joberta Haught White; one daughter, Jo Lynn Burns; two sisters, Sue McCoy Rush of Parkersburg and Goosecreek, S.C., and Ann Anderson Hersman of Spencer; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Billy Gene White.
Service was Monday at First Baptist Church, Sistersville. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, Sistersville.
