Sylvia Gene Channels
Sylvia Gene Channels, 72, of Spencer, died Saturday, June 19, 2010 at CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston.
She was born in Steubenville, Ohio, a daughter of the late Leslie and Eula Little Tice. She was a homemaker. She was a former employee of Kellwood Company and Norris Industries, Spencer.
She is survived by children, Joseph H. Nelson Jr. of Spencer and Kandie F. Sampson of Looneyville; sisters, Mary Jane Dawson of Michigan, Leslie Wise and Karen Wsxeborski, both of Ohio, and Victoria Cline of Parkersburg; brothers, Ronald and Elmer Tice, both of Ohio; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Channels Sr.; a son, John E. Channels Jr.; brothers, Lester, Robert and James Tice; and a sister, Roberta Tice.
Burial was in Sugar Grove Cemetery, Empire, Ohio. There was no service. John H. Taylor Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mary Reed Duncan
Mary Reed Duncan, 88, of Ripley, died Friday, June 4, 2010 at her home after a short illness.
She was born at Harmony, a daughter of the late Willis and Stella Reed. She was a homemaker and a former clerk at Heck’s in Ripley. She was a member, since 1968, of Ripley Baptist Temple. She was a teacher in the Nursery II class for 35 years. Her interests included spending time with her grandchildren, reading, crafts and watching the Cincinnati Reds.
She is survived by her daughter, Sheila Gibbs of Ripley; a brother, David “Pee Wee” Reed of Spencer; a sister, Mary Nichols of Hartsville, Ohio; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 1968, Donald F. Duncan; her son, J. Randall Duncan; brothers, Cyrus “Cy” Reed and Orville “Dick” Reed; and a sister, Myrtle Reed.
Service was Tuesday, June 8 at Ripley Baptist Temple, with Pastor Rick Perrine officiating. Burial was in Fairplain Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Ripley Baptist Temple, 320 Charleston Drive, Ripley WV 25271.
R. Ermal Jones
R. Ermal Jones, 82, of Charleston, died Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, after a short illness.
She was born at Island Branch, a daughter of the late Mayford and Susie Jones. She attended school at Straight Creek and Walton High School. She was a member, trustee and worker at Old Faith Bible Church, formerly Old Faith Gospel Tabernacle, Charleston. She was a Christian, since 1943, when she was saved at Mount Moriah Baptist Church. She also attended Parsons Chapel in Charleston for several years.
She had worked for the Clyde and Beulah Jarvis family of Elkview and for the Jim and Betty Caldwell family of Charleston. She retired from Charleston National Bank in 2003.
She is survived by a brother, Rex Jones of Charleston; and nephews and nieces, Curtis Jones, Paul Jones and Jennifer Jones, all of Mentor, Ohio, Sara Riley of Milford, Ohio, Keith Jones and Linda Madden, both of Charleston, Lois Geiger of Huntington, Eric Jones of Olmsted Falls, Ohio; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Delmar Jones; and sisters, Opal Harding, Anna Wilkinson and Macel M. Jones.
Service was Saturday at Long & Fisher Funeral Home, Sissonville, with Rev. Donald Young officiating. Burial was in John Beane Cemetery, Sissonville. Condolences may be expressed online at longfisherfuneralhome.com.
May Longfellow
May Longfellow, 86, of Spencer, died Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at Roane General Hospital after an extended illness.
She was born in Crosby, England, a daughter of the late Robert and Edith Millicent Middleton Leatherbarrow. She was a retired employee of Kellwood Corporation.
She is survived by her children, Blake Longfellow and Gail Henderson, both of Montgomery, Ala., and Eileen Woods and Stuart Longfellow, both of Spencer; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 1999, Emett Earl Longfellow; sisters, Joan Kearns and Mollie Leatherbarrow; and a brother, Robert Leatherbarrow.

James Dean ‘Jimmy’ Lowe
James Dean “Jimmy” Lowe, 53, of Spencer, died Thursday, June 17, 2010 at CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston.
He was born in Elizabeth, a son of Darol P. and Delores J. “Dee” Jarvis Lowe of Spencer. He was a 1975 graduate of Spencer High School. He worked with his father in the family business, Spencer BSA Inc. He played drums for several different rock bands throughout his life. His interests included fishing and restoring antique furniture.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 35 years, Patricia L. Hammack Lowe; a daughter, Rachel Bennett of Spencer; brothers, Randy P. Lowe of Spencer and John D. Lowe of Ripley; a sister, Julie A. Garrett of Spencer; and three grandchildren.

Ruie Syble McCune
Ruie Syble McCune, 77, of Pigeon, died Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at her home after a short illness.
She was a daughter of the late William Samuel and Lula Florence Adkins Runion. She was a homemaker and secretary of Sunny Hill Baptist Church, Pigeon.
She is survived by her son, Donald; daughters, Patricia, Sherlene, Denise, Reba, Maxine and Melissa; sisters, Georgi Faye Jett and Rada Ellen Walker; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and best friend, Hattie May Hall.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Rev. John McCune; a son, Johnny Lee McCune; and two brothers.

Amos Paul O’Dell
Amos Paul O’Dell, 79, of Looneyville, died Friday, June 18, 2010 at Roane General Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born in Clay County, a son of the late Patrick O’Dell and Elizabeth Runnion O’Dell Mullins. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a farmer.
He is survived by a brother, Eugene O’Dell of Looneyville; sisters, Marlene Vineyard of Arnoldsburg and Arlene Cobb of Clay; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Patrick “Junior,” Leon and William O’Dell; a sister, Helen Carper; a half-brother, Huey O’Dell; and a half-sister, Evelyn Adkins.
