Tressie Church
Tressie Church, 92, of Orma, died Friday, March 28, 2008 at Roane General Hospital.
She was born at Mt. Zion, a daughter of the late John and Maggie Wood Crawford. She was a homemaker and member of Leatherbark Community Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Ernestine and Christine Starcher, both of Arnoldsburg, and Karen Bragg of Ripley; two sons, Fred Jr. of Orma and Victor of Newton Falls, Ohio; one sister, Bea Shaffer of Spencer; and 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Church Sr.; one son, Bernard Eugene; and nine siblings.
Service was Tuesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Austin White and Rev. David Weaver officiating. Burial was in Starcher Cemetery, Arnoldsburg.
James Robert Daniell
James Robert “Bob” Daniell, 83, of Tucson, Ariz., died Friday, March 28, 2008, after a long hospitalization.
He was born in Spencer, a son of the late Earl and Gladyz VanDevender Daniell. He was the owner of Bob Daniell Chevrolet and administrator of Spencer State Hospital. He was a 50-year member of Moriah Lodge No. 38, AF&AM, the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Parkersburg and the Nemesis Temple, AANOMS, Parkersburg. He was also a member of Spencer Rotary Club and Spencer-Roane Volunteer Fire Department. He was an army veteran of World War II and a graduate of Denison University, Granville, Ohio. He was a former member of St. John’s United Methodist Church.
He is survived by five children, Danette of Parkersburg, Clerc of Spencer, Christine Connell of Cleveland, Frances Calcutt of Lake Forest, Ill. and James Robert of Marietta, Ga.; one brother, Hugh of Denver; and 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Parrish Daniell; and one sister, Elizabeth Hill.
Service will be later. John H. Taylor Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
Paul L. Harris Sr.
Paul L. Harris Sr., 84, of Looneyville, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at Roane General Hospital.
He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Albert and Rena Jett Harris. He was a pipeliner, oil field worker and worked in construction. He was an army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by one daughter, Rhonda Ray of Walton; one son, Paul Jr. of Walton; one brother, Virgil of Looneyville; and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Graveside service was Saturday at Rocky Branch Cemetery, Walton. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mattie D. Hershner
Mattie D. Miller Hershner, 92, of Hamilton, Ohio, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at Birchwood Care Center.
She was born at Gip, a daughter of Ellis and Alice See Miller. She was a member of BPOE #93 Elks Auxiliary.
She is survived by four step-children, Danny, Donald, David and Darell; and 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three husbands, Leonard Ramsey, Woodrow Sherman “Buddy” Winkler and Reginald “Penny” Hershner.

L. Kenneth Lewis
L. Kenneth “Ken” Lewis, 92, of Spencer, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at Miletree Center.
He was born in Maryland, a son of the late Mark and Marion McGill Lewis. He was a retired electrician for Westinghouse. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church. He was a Marine and member of the Seabees.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Kline Lewis; one son, Darrell Robert of Westville, Ill.; one brother, Darrell James of Pittsburgh; and two grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Mark.
Service was Sunday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Anderson officiating. Burial was in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery with military graveside rites by local veterans groups.

Elva Louise McPherson
Elva Louise McPherson, 89, of Looneyville, died Thursday, March 27, 2008 at CAMC, General Division after a short illness.
She was born in Jackson County, a daughter of the late Grigsby and Elva Stewart. She was an LPN for Heartland Nursing Home, Kanawha City.
She is survived by one son, Douglas of Newton; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, P.D. McPherson.
There was no service. Vail Funeral Home, Ripley, was in charge of arrangements.
Clara Bell Newell
Clara Bell Newell, 85, of Mt. Zion, died Thursday, March 27, 2008 at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Systems, Grantsville.
She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late William David and Esta Palmer. She was a homemaker and a cook.
She is survived by one son, Jim of Grantsville; five sisters, Alice Ramsey, Leora Mae Kalman and Dola Palmer, all of Maryland, Cora Foester of Pennsylvania and Lora Hewitt of Michigan; and four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy W. Newell; two daughters, Judith Ann and Georgia Kish; and two sisters, Grace Palmer and Delma Ruth Kerby.
Service is 1 p.m. today (Thursday) at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial is in Sand Ridge Cemetery. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
John Edward Seaman
John Edward Seaman, 86, of Ripley, died Thursday, March 27, 2008 at Ravenswood Village Care Center following a long illness.
He was born in Reedy, a son of the late Gay and Faye Conley Seaman. He was a navy veteran of World War II. He retired from Kaiser Aluminum and was a substitute teacher in Jackson County.
He is survived by three daughters, Jean Rhodes, Diane Hamric and Debbie Clendenin, all of Ripley; two sons, James Donald Lowther of Ripley and Stephen Lowther of Benton, Ark.; two sisters, Ileana Sims of Palestine and Corinne Full of Ohio; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Seaman.
Service was Saturday at Mt. Zion Church, Peniel. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Parsons-Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, was in charge of arrangements.
Barbara Scott
Barbara Scott, 72, of Bradenton, Fla., died Wednesday, March 12, 2008 after an extend bout of cancer.
She was born in Morgantown.
She is survived by her husband, Basil “Ed” Scott Jr.
Service will be later in Bradenton. Burial will be in Snodgrass Family Cemetery, Gandeeville.
Hazel M. Tawney
Hazel M. Tawney, 81, of Newton, died Thursday, March 27, 2008 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, after a short illness.
She was born in Spencer, a daughter of the late Tracy J. and Beatrice Hively Short. She attended Clay County High School.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Dan Tawney; one daughter, Sandy Gray of Newton; two sisters, Bonnie Seymour of Spencer and Mardine Pierson of Clay; one brother, Emil Short of Valley Fork; and eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen A.; one son, Jerry; three sisters, Helen Davis and two infants; three brothers, Edward, Donald and Charles Short; and one grandson.
Graveside service is noon Saturday at Tawney Cemetery with Rev. Ron Fisher and Rev. J. Herbert Smith officiating. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mary S. Taylor
Mary S. Taylor, 86, of Valdosta, Ga., died Saturday, March 29, 2008 at home after a long illness.
She was born in Roane County, a daughter of the late Espel and Flossie Edith Kiser Starcher. She was retired from Georgia Bureau of Investigation and a member of Hahira First Freewill Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Opie A. Taylor; one daughter, Joyce Trumbo of Valdosta; and one brother, Roy Starcher of Charleston.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, David; and one brother, Ralph Starcher.
Service was Tuesday at Carson McLane Funeral Home, Valdosta, with Rev. Arthur Knight and Warren Larson officiating. Entombment was in Riverview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Shirley June Watson
Shirley June Watson, 72, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008 in Houston after a long illness.
She was born at Liverpool, a daughter of the late Jack and Jean Marshall. She graduated from Marshall University and taught in Jackson County for over 28 years.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Gene; two sons, Scott Allen of Houston and Ty Bradey of Denver; one sister, Margaret Sturm of Spencer; and one brother, Jim Marshall of Spencer.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Dottie Banks.
Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 11 at First United Methodist Church of Ravenswood.
