Clarence Bailey
Clarence Bailey, 70, of Chloe, died Sunday, March 8, 2009 at Shady Rest Nursing Home in Dalton, Ohio.
He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Amos and Maude Groves Bailey. He was retired from the W.Va. Dept. of Highways and had worked for Norris Industries for 15 years.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Phyllis Miller Bailey; son, Daniel Bailey of Dalton; daughter, Margaret Metz of Orma; brothers, Paul Bailey of Orrville, Ohio, Texas Bailey of Parkersburg and Charles Bailey of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; sisters, Juanita of Massillon, Ohio, and Sue of Spencer; two grandsons; two step-grandsons; and one step-granddaughter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Lee, Ray and Johnny; sisters, Glenna McCune and Madge Greathouse; and one grandson.
Service is today (Thursday) at 1 p.m. at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg with Rev. Darius Arnold officiating. Burial will be in the Orma Cemetery.
Emogene Cottrell
Emogene Cottrell, 61, of Shock, Gilmer County, died Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Charleston Area Medical Center.
She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Harper and Ocie Sampson King. She was a CNA at the Gilmer County Senior Citizens Center, Glenville.
She is survived by her son, Denzil Cottrell Jr. of Glenville; daughters, Malissa Cottrell of Braxton County and Amanda Williams of Glenville; four brothers, Dwight King and George King, both of Shock, Larry King of Virginia and Delbert King of Normantown; sisters, Lyd Dye and Sharon King, both of Ohio; seven grandchildren; and her companion, James Meadows.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Parsons.
Service was Tuesday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial was in the Collins Community Cemetery, Stumptown.
James W. Cottrell
James Wellington “Jimmy” Cottrell, 55, of Spencer died Sunday, March 8, 2009 at Roane General Hospital.
He was the son of the late William Chriss and Alma Mae Brown Cottrell. He was a former pipefitter with South Eastern Sprinkler of Greenville, S.C.
He is survived by his wife, Glenda McAbee Cottrell; sons, James R. Cottrell of White Stone, S.C., Joseph Cottrell of Spartanburg, S.C., Sohn Cottrell of Bloomington, Md., and Timothy Cottrell of Walton; daughter, Christina Smith of Spencer; stepmother, Mona Cottrell; brothers, Dale Cottrell of Amma, Larry Cottrell of Bloomington, Chris Cottrell of Coolville, Ohio, Jeffery Cottrell of Anderson, S.C., Tommy Cottrell of Birch River, Malcolm Cottrell and Mark Cottrell, both of Walton, and William Cottrell of Glenmont, Ohio; sisters, Barbara Stevens of Dunbar, Sherry Clark of Glenmont, Trina Klintworth of Millersburg, Ohio, and Salena Shephard of Lakeville, Ohio; and seven grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, with Pastor Ora Holbert officiating. Burial will be in the Brown Cemetery, Walton. Visitation is today (Thursday) from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

George E. Linger
George E. Linger, 65, formerly of Spencer, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at Whispering Hills Care Center, Mount Vernon, Ohio, after an extended illness.
He was born in Spencer, a son of the late Harley M. and Goldie E. Carper Linger.
He is survived by his sons, Martin Linger of Croton, Ohio, Nicholas G. of Newberry, S.C.; brothers, Delmar, Bill and Sherry Linger; sisters, Mary Elkins, Ella Bess and Linda Bess; and three grandsons.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Gleo Linger and Donzel Linger; and sisters, Evelyn Stevens and Rosaline Boothe.
Burial was at Harmony Cemetery and a celebration of his life was planned for later at the family farm.
Law-Baker Funeral Home, Utica, Ohio, assisted the family with arrangements.
Charles D. Rudd
Charles D. Rudd, 87, of Stumptown, died Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Systems, Grantsville.
He was born at Valley Head, a son of the late William and Pearl May Asbury Rudd. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a Christian.
He is survived by his sons, Donivan Rudd of Louisville, Ky., Charles Rudd of Elizabethtown, Ky., and Thomas Rudd of Newbury, Ohio; daughters, Darlene Putnam of Shock and Tonya Herncane of Hiram, Ohio; sisters, Nina Saunders of West Virginia and Lucille Thorn of Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Marie McCauley Rudd; son, Thomas Allen Rudd; brothers, James, Darius and Ted; sisters Blanche, Helen, Cleo and Cleva; one half-brother; and two half-sisters.
Service was Tuesday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg with Rev. John Putnam officiating. Burial was in Rosedale Community Cemetery.
Beulah Smith
Beulah Smith, 100, of Looneyville, died Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Ivydale, after a short illness.
She was born at Stringtown, a daughter of the late Walter and Leota Anderson Westfall. She was a homemaker, a long-time member of Johnson Creek Baptist Church, Looneyville, and a lifelong resident of Roane County.
She is survived by her daughters, Nadine Witte of Parkersburg and Emogene Tingler of Williamstown; sons, Jack Smith and Jarrett Smith, both of Newton; 12 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her special caregiver, granddaughter, Sharon Smith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Dennis Smith; sisters, Opal Groves, Mabel Carper and Olive Tabor; brother, Pete Westfall; and one granddaughter.
Service was Tuesday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Anothony Ferrebee officiating. Burial was in the J. Herbert Smith Family Cemetery, Vineyard Ridge.
