Sandra Raye Alvis
Sandra Raye Alvis, 61, of Spencer, died Friday, March 14, 2008 at Roane General Hospital after an extended bout with cancer.
She was born in Washington, D.C., a daughter of the late Bill and Garland Shirley. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by one son, Phillip Bryan of Spencer; one step-son, Jeffrey “Jay” Alvis of Spencer; three sisters, Vicky Smallwood of Gassaway and Ann Rizzo and Gail Moats, both of South Carolina; two brothers, Richard Shirley of Maryland and Rodney Shirley of California; and three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Alvis; and one brother, Wesley Shirley.
The body was cremated. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Wilma A. Bumgarner
Wilma A. Bumgarner, 74, of Reedy, died Thursday, March 13, 2008 at Jackson General Hospital, Ripley.
She was born in Wirt County, a daughter of the late Earl W. and Lenora Daugherty Brown. She worked at Kaiser Aluminum for 10 years, was a former owner of Spencer Western Auto and a member of the Farm Bureau and Farm Service Agency, where she retired. She was a member of Peniel Community Church and attended Cherry Valley and Good Hope churches.
She is survived by one daughter, Lisa of Reedy; and one sister, Evelyn Curry of Ravenswood.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Jennings Bumgarner; and one brother, Edwin Earl Brown.
Service was Monday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home. Burial was in Pisgah Cemetery, Palestine.
James C. Caldwell
James C. Caldwell, 86, of Spencer, died Friday, March 14, 2008 at Cabell Huntington Hospital.
He was born at Clover, a son of the late Ballard Caldwell and Sarah Hibdon. He was a former pipeliner and owned Caldwell Dozer. He was an army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Rosalee Stanley Caldwell; seven children, James Jr., Alberta, Sandra Santee, Jamie Lea, Ramona Goodall, Charlie Morton and Jennifer Butcher; two sisters, Ocie Starcher and Bessie Anderson; and nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Robert, Jink and Harry.
Graveside service was Monday at Clover Cemetery with Pastor Darrin Cale officiating. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
David Lee Clark
David Lee Clark, 38, of Walton, died Sunday, March 2, 2008, from injuries he received in an ATV accident.
He was born in Clarksburg, a son of David Arthur and Alta Mabel Baker Clark of Clarksburg.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Christina Wright of Fairmont.
Service was Saturday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Shafer officiating.
Earl V. Hill
Earl V. Hill, 81, of Belpre, Ohio, died Friday, March 14, 2008 at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.
He was born in Wirt County, a son of the late Harry Howard and Mintie Williams Hill. He was a meat cutter and army veteran.
He is survived by two sisters, Ruth Hill and Lou Bise, both of Reedy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Jane Hill; one brother, Howard; and one sister, Tiny Bise.
Graveside service was Tuesday at Noble Ridge Cemetery with Pastor John Ellison officiating. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
William H. Kinder
William H. Kinder, 87, of South Charleston, died Sunday, March 16, 2008 at home after a long illness.
He was retired from Union Carbide and was a navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Mallory Kinder; two sons, Eugene of Martinsburg and Stanley of Left Hand; two daughters, Beverly Fields of South Charleston and Yvonne Brown of Charleston; two stepsons, Robert Dodson II of Tennessee and Kelly Dodson of New Hampshire; and seven grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Service is 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston, with Rev. Pete Thompson officiating. Burial is in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Elbert Ray King
Elbert Ray King, 89, of Akron, Ohio, died Saturday, March 15, 2008 at Monongahela General Hospital, Morgantown.
He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Clark and Ella Mae Houchin King. He retired from Goodyear after 34 years.
He is survived by one sister, Anna Marie Hess of Morgantown.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two wives, Jenny Irene King and Lucille Sherrill King; one sister, Elva Cave; and three brothers, Denver, Dennis and Lovell.
Service was Wednesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home. Burial was in Houchin Cemetery, Calhoun County.
Christopher B. Mace
Christopher B. Mace, 38, of Elkins died Sunday, March 9, 2008 at home.
He was born in Spencer, a son of David Mace of Elkins and the late Mary Mace.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his step-mother, Charlene Mace of Elkins; one brother, Kip of Hickory, N.C.; and one step-brother, Robin Dolly of Elkins.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by four grandparents.

Ruby M. Starcher
Ruby M. Starcher, 82, died Sunday, March 16, 2008.
She was born at Nebo, a daughter of the late Alec West and Addie Tanner.
She is survived by six sons, Jack, Clark, Bim, Bub, Bill and Gary; four daughters, Carolyn Beck, Delsie Pierson, Thelma Ree Schlesinger and Kathie Fuiten; five siblings, Ota, Berthie, Ollie, Homer and Ed; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lambert Starcher; and one daughter, Martha.
Service is 3 p.m. today (Thursday) at Unity Gospel Tabernacle, Nebo. Burial is in Coen Cemetery. Visitation is noon to 3 p.m. today at the church. Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, is in charge of arrangements.
Avis Elizabeth Toothman
Avis Elizabeth Toothman, 89, of Hickory, N.C., died Thursday, March 13, 2008.
She was a daughter of the late Markus E. and Mary Jane Wayne Chaplin. She was retired from Spencer State Hospital and attended First Baptist Church of Spencer.
She is survived by one son, Bob of Hickory; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Chaplin.
Graveside service was Sunday at Eventide Cemetery with Pastor Garry Bowen officiating. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Ossie Ray Underwood
Ossie Ray Underwood, 87, of Gandeeville, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at home.
He was born in Clarksburg, a son of the late Earl and Lollie Adams Underwood. He was retired from Massey-Ferguson, Detroit, and a Baptist.
He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Khdor of Dearborn, Mich., and Ruth Morris of Harmony; four sons, Robert of Gandeeville, John of Speed, Jack of Spring Hill, Tenn., and Dave of Evans; and 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mellie Underwood; and two sons, Ora and Delbert.
Service was Sunday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Keen officiating. Burial was in Shady Dale Cemetery, Gandeeville.
Vada A. White
Vada A. White, 73, of Ripley, formerly of Tariff, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at St. Francis Hospital, Charleston, after an extended illness.
She was born in Roane County, a daughter of the late Harley Keaton and Zona Chapman Keaton Hickman. She was a member of Newton Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, J.W. “Bus” White of Ripley; three daughters; two brothers; six sisters; and seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two children, Timothy and Yvonne; and two brothers, Virgil and Bobby Keaton.
Service was Sunday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Leon B. Strickland officiating. Burial was in Keaton Cemetery, Newton.
Marjorie Ruth Williams
Marjorie Ruth Williams, 85, of Spencer, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at Miletree Center following a long illness.
She was born in Roane County, a daughter of the late Levingston and Ida Bell Miller Greathouse. She was a member of Church of the Living God.
She is survived by two sons, Roger of Elizabeth and Richard of Reedy; one daughter, Carol Bottenfield of Spencer; one brother, Harvey Greathouse of Manchester, Ohio; two sisters, Betty Seymore and Macel Schreckengost, both of Barberton, Ohio; and nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Williams; and five grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Service was Saturday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Randy Wilson officiating. Burial was in Betts Cemetery.
Lela Susan Wright
Lela Susan Wright, 94, died Thursday, March 13, 2008 at Ravenswood Village.
She was born in Reedy, a daughter of the late Clark and Effie Moore Wright. She was a graduate of Spencer High School, West Virginia University, Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, University of Tulsa and Indiana University. She was a teacher at Spencer High School, Bacone College High School, Glen Burnie Senior High School, Northern Baptist Seminary and Judson College and Hagerstown Junior College, from which she retired. She was a member of the Frances Crooks Circle, First Baptist Church, Ravenswood, Omega S.S. Class, Pi Lambda Theta, Friends of the Library at Eastern Baptist Seminary and W.Va. Baptist Historical Society.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Clyde, Carl and Lawrence; two sisters, Bessie of Ravenswood and Eula Grogg of Atlanta.
Service was Saturday at First Baptist Church, Ravenswood, with Rev. Jonathan Villers, Rev. Kenneth Miller and Dr. Manfred T. Brauch officiating. Burial was in Ravenswood Cemetery.
