M. Rosalee Morris
M. Rosalee Morris, 74, of Spencer and Ripley, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008 at Eldercare of Ripley after an extended illness.
She was born in Gilmer County, a daughter of the late Russell and Tressie Edwards Ellison. She was a restaurant worker and member of Sycamore Centennial Church, Ripley.
She is survived by five daughters, Karen Crihfield of Amma, Linda Williams of Tennessee, Janet Shropshire of Roy, Wash., Becky Spurlock of Spencer and Granda Summers of Ripley; three sons, Ken Starcher of North Carolina, Troy Long of Spencer and Rick Watson of Ripley; two sisters, Clara Belle Wright of Romney and Vera Watts of Rittman, Ohio; one brother, Arden Ellison of Ohio; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Julius C. Morris, and several siblings.
The body was cremated. Service will be later at Sycamore Centennial Church. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Missouria Kay Nicholas
Missouria Kay Nicholas, 53, of Orma, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital, Parkersburg, after a long illness.
She was a daughter of the late Lizzie Nutter and Elbert Beckett. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Denver Nicholas of Orma; two daughters, Emma Howell and Melissa Nicholas, both of Orma; five stepchildren, David Nicholas, Joyce Stout and Robin McCumbers, all of Orma, Dale Nicholas of Alabama and Patrick Nicholas of Chloe; four sisters, Ruth Rhodes of Parkersburg, Evelyn Beckett of Orma, Margaret Rush of Sand Ridge and Barbara Taylor of North Carolina; two brothers, Danny of Chloe and Virgil of Millstone; and 12 step-grandchildren and 13 step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two infant sisters and one stepdaughter, Wanda Carpenter.
Service was Tuesday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Elder George Rose officiating. Burial was in Nicholas Cemetery, Orma.
Gary D. Nicholson
Gary D. Nicholson, 23, of Newton, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008 in Clay County from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born in Spencer, a son of Ed and Sarah Snyder Nicholson. He was a 2002 graduate of Roane County High School and employed by Halliburton, Elkview.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his fiancée, Kacie Smith of Newton; one daughter, Mahailey Nicholson; one sister, Jodi Nicholson of Spencer; and three grandparents.
He was preceded in death by one grandfather.
Service was Monday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Danny Whited and Rev. Larry Greathouse officiating. Burial was in Swank Cemetery.
Allan Kent Taylor
Allan Kent Taylor, 52, of Newton, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008 at home after a sudden illness.
He was born in Charleston, a son of the late Cecil C. and Cleo G. Hensley Taylor Sr. He was an employee of SGS Minerals, Fola Coal Division, Bickmore. He was the lead guitarist, vocalist and one of the founding members of the Black Mountain Band. He was a 1973 graduate of Spencer High School.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Anne McGuire Taylor; one son, Ariel of Clay; one daughter, Rachel Stalnaker of Newton; and two brothers, Cecil C. Jr. of Dumfries, Va., and Ronald K. of Newton.
Service is today (Thursday) at Newton United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert A. “Bob” Keen officiating. Burial will be in Laurel Point Cemetery, Newton. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church.
John H. Taylor Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
