Dona A. Drake
Dona A. Drake, 92, of Hurricane, formerly of Spencer, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington.
She was born at Left Hand, a daughter of the late Oliver Dewight “Holly” and Eska May Allen Jarvis. She was a retired teacher, reading supervisor and Title I director. Her career included 28 years with the Roane County Board of Education and 16 years with the Wyoming County BOE. She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church.
She is survived by twin adopted daughters, Donna Jean Drake Gandee of Spencer and Dinah Jayne Drake of Sandyville; sisters, Floretta Nester of Newton, Naomi Ruth Myers of Richmond, Va., and Luberta “Tiny” Neil of Summersville; brothers, Noble Jarvis of Wadsworth, Ohio, Oliver Jarvis of Sandyville and Larry Joe Jarvis of Cleveland; and three grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hobert Eugene Drake in 1991; sisters, Frankie Eddy, Mary Ellen Calloway and Lucy Helmic.
Service was Friday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, with Rev. Homer Hensley officiating. Burial was in Laurel Point Cemetery, Newton.
Eloise McCulty
Eloise McCulty, 93, of Deland Fla., formerly of Spencer, died Saturday, April 3, 2010 at the Alliance Center for Healthcare, Deland.
She was born in Spencer, a daughter of the late Flavius B. and Margaret Camp Lawrentz. She lived in Spencer for 79 years before moving to Florida a few years ago. She owned and operated the Spencer-Roane Beauty Shop for many years and served as first lady of Spencer during her late husband, Roland McCulty’s, two terms as mayor and sheriff. She was a long-time member of St. John’s United Methodist Church.
She is survived by nieces, Margaret Swinford of Cincinatti, Mary Hennen of Vienna, Nanci McDonald of North Port, Fla., and Mary Garland Evans of Deland; and a nephew, William Garland of Noblesville, Ind.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; and sisters, Eleanor Wright and Betty Garland.
Service is today (Thursday) at noon at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, with Rev. Timothy Bleigh officiating. Burial will be in Eventide Cemetery. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Linda S. McCumbers
Linda S. McCumbers, 88, of Nicut, died Saturday, April 3, 2010 at Minnie Hamilton Health Care Systems, Grantsville.
She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Gallory and Ida Cottrell McCumbers. She was an accomplished and well-known musician. She and her husband, Lester, received widespread recognition for their music over a period of many years. She was a Christian.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughters, Beatrice Putnam of Arnoldsburg, Anna Lee White of Auburn, Ohio, Paulette Ice of Garrettsville, Ohio, Joan Cottrell of Nicut, Sharon Morris of Lake Milton, Ohio, and Tammy Smith of Tanner; sons, Billy McCumbers of Five Forks and Timmy McCumbers of Nicut; sisters, Gladys Snyder and Clara Turner, both of Ohio; brother, Junior McCumbers of Grafton, Ohio; 24 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Roger McCumbers; sisters, Snowy Nichalson and her twin, India Drennen; brothers, Willis and Bernard McCumbers; and a grandson.
Service was Tuesday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial was in Mt. Run Cemetery, Nicut.
Chlora McGough
Chlora Cox Westfall Harmon McGough, 99, formerly of Harmony, died Sunday, April 4, 2010.
She was born at Harmony, a daughter of the late Joe and Bessie Cox.
She is survived by daughters, Emogene, Goldie, Virginia, Eleanor and Wilda; sisters, Ida and Glada; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Service was Wednesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, with Rev. Larry Jones officiating. Burial was in Mt. Herman Cemetery, Harmony. Memorial donations may be made to House Calls Hospice of Parkersburg, 1226 Market St., Parkersburg WV 26101.
Altia L. McCroskey Sanderlin
Altia L. McCroskey Sanderlin, 83, of South Charleston, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010.
She was a daughter of the late Lawrence E. Dolan and Audra Dolan Johnson. She was a 1944 graduate of Spencer High School. She was formerly employed in the printing industry and retired from W.Va. Medical Institute. She was an accomplished seamstress. Her interests included flower and vegetable gardening, fishing, reading, visiting friends, watching sports and traveling with her late husband, Walter.
She is survived by her children, Jeff McCroskey of Amma, Donna Loges of Ft. Mill, S.C., and Tracy Lloyd of South Charelston; brother, Wendell Dolan of Ripley; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, James Ward and Walter Sanderlin; brothers, Kenneth Dolan, Charles Dolan and Leroy Dolan; and sisters, Bernadine Dolan and Geraldine Stotts.
