Beulah E. Ashley

Beulah E. Ashley, 92, of Big Chimney, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2008 at the home of her daughter.
She was born at Clio, a daughter of the late Henry H. and Emma Hutchinson Noel. She was a member of Hurricane Baptist Church, Clio.
She is survived by her daughter, June Parker of Big Chimney; one sister, Nancy Smith of Frame; one grandson, Greg Parker of Big Chimney; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Pat Ashley; an infant son; an infant daughter; and two brothers, Gay and Darrell Noel.
Service will be today (Thursday) at 1 p.m. at Matics Funeral Home in Clendenin with Rev. Robert Jett officiating. Burial will be at Hutchison Cemetery on Vineyard Ridge.

Clenton Lando Cottrell

Clenton Lando Cottrell, 90, of Spencer, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008 at Roane General Hospital.
He was born at Oka, a son of the late Elliot and Flora Jarvis Cottrell. He retired from the US Army with 20 years of service, having served in World War II. He was also retired from Spencer State Hospital and was a farmer.
He is survived by three daughters, Ramonda Carpenter of Walton and Sharon Cottrell and Karen Cottrell Cummings, both of Spencer; two sons, Larry Cottrell of Gandeeville and Steve Cottrell of London, Ky; one brother, Warren Cottrell of Tariff; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Gladys E. Cook Cottrell; his second wife, Evelyn Marie Hoselton Cot-trell; two sisters, Gracie Badgett and Orva Barney; four brothers, Lester, Paris, Daris, and Ezra Cottrell; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Service was Saturday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Greathouse officiating. Burial was in Eventide Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by several Roane County veterans’ groups.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Roane County Committee on Aging (kitchen), 811 Madison Ave., Spencer WV 25276.



Orpha Pauletta Fields

Orpha Pauletta Fields, 93, of Lawton, Okla., died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008 in Oklahoma.
She was born in Spencer, a daughter of the late Ava Morris-son and Curtis Cox. She was a member of Gandeeville United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. She moved to Oklahoma in 1996, where she was an active member of Paradise Valley Church.
She is survived by a son, Paul Fields of Lawton; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Fields; and one daughter, Janet Mae Fields.
Service was Friday at Paradise Valley Baptist Church, with Rev. Donny Crittendon officiating, under the direction of Fletcher Funeral Home, Fletcher, Okla. Burial was Tuesday in the Gandeeville Cemetery under the direction of Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home.


French Gay Harper

French Gay Harper, 84, of Spencer, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008 at Roane General Hospital.
He was born at Walton, a son of the late James Harrison and Della L. Holbert Harper. He attended the Gospel Truth Church, Spencer. He enjoyed boxing and hunting.
He is survived by one brother, Dewey Harper of Clendenin; one aunt, Beulah Collins of Walton; four nephews; and 12 nieces.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Harper; three brothers, Harry Har-vey Harper, Glenville Harper, James Delmar Harper; three infant brothers; three infant sisters; and a nephew and a niece.
Service was Sunday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Pastor Ora Holbert officiating. Burial was in Rocky Branch Cemetery, Walton.

Richard Charles "Rick" Hubbard

Richard Charles “Rick” Hubbard, 57, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., formerly of Spencer, died suddenly at his home Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008.
He was born in Charleston, a son of Richard and Ann Hubbard of Walton. He was a graduate of Walton High School and Glenville State College and taught and coached in Spencer for 23 years. He also served as a Roane County Commissioner and Roane County Assessor. He relocated to Palm Beach County, Fla., in 1997 and spent the last 11 years as a teacher and eventually as athletic director at William T. Dwyer High School.
He is survived by his wife, Sherri; one daughter, Dr. Heather Hubbard of Morgantown; one son, Doug Hubbard of Perry, Fla.; and special “daughter,” Lora Morehead; one brother, Mike Hubbard of Clendenin; grandmother, Naomi Robinson; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Cindy Hubbard; his maternal grandfather, Charles E. Robinson; and his paternal grandparents, Howard and Mamie Hubbard.
Service will be at 5 p.m. Friday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Greathouse officiating. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. The body was cremated. A memorial service took place in the William T. Dwyer High School auditorium on Wednesday.

Verba May King

Verba May King, 97, of Kim-bolton, Ohio, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2008 at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center, Cambridge, Ohio.
She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late James and Alice Butler Sears.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Ann Whiting of Spencer and Charlotte Jean Drake of Kimbolton; two sons, Vaughan King of Mogadore, Ohio, and Benny King of Akron, Ohio; one sister, Nell Jarvis of Spencer; 16 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frances D. King; one son, Basil King; one daughter, Sharon Fraley; four sisters, Ruth Brown, Orma Criss, Hazel Kreigbaum and Nelsie Millard; and three brothers, Ray, Sherwood and Shirley Sears.
Service was Friday at Stump Funeral Home in Arnoldsburg with Rev. Russell Stump officiating. Burial was in the Houchin Cemetery at Arnoldsburg.

Kathryn L. McClain

Kathryn L. McClain, 93, of Rittman, Ohio, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008 at Doylestown Health Care Center.
She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Holly and Arminda Coen Moss. She was a homemaker and a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, Elana. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting and reading. She also made “lap covers” for residents of local nursing homes, and made “silkies” for children.
She is survived by two daughters, Catherine Wertz of Rittman, and Glennis “Cricket” Conley of Marshallville, Ohio; two sons, Dale McClain of Creston and John McClain of Spencer; brother, George Moss of Haverhill, Mass.; sister, Donnas Coulter of New Philadelphia, Ohio; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard McClain; a brother, Glen Moss; a sister, Myrtle Lance; and two grandchildren.
Service was Monday, Dec. 8 at Zion Hill Baptist Cemetery, Elana with Rev. Ronald Fisher officiating.

Jody Lee Miller

Jody Lee Miller, 37, of Spencer, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008 in Sut-ton.
He was born in Charleston, a son of Maurice M. Miller of Stow, Ohio, and Carolyn Jean Carper Miller Bowen of Baltimore. He was a disabled tree trimmer.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one son, Shane Miller of Clay; one daughter, Shiloh Miller of Clay; one sister, Tawnya Miller of Baltimore; and one brother, Michael Miller of Pasadena, Md.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Bob and Helen Carper; and paternal grandparents, James and Madge Miller.
There was no funeral service. John H. Taylor Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Rolland H. "Ronnie" Schaller

Rolland H. “Ronnie” Schaller, 87, of Spencer, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008 at Miletree Center.
He was born in St. Paul, Minn., a son of the late Edward and Elizabeth Becker Schaller. He was a bookbinder in Cleveland, where he met his wife of 66 years, Alice Boggs Schaller. He was trained in electronics during World War II and served in the European theatre under General Patton, where he won two bronze stars for valor. He worked as an electronics technician, later becoming a radar systems specialist for the Coast Guard. He was also an artist and poet, and had the ability to fix mechanical and electronic devices. He was a founding member of Willow-Hill Baptist Church in Kirtland, Ohio, a former trustee of Epling Chapel Baptist Church at Looneyville and taught Sunday school for over 50 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, David, Charles, William, and Terry Schaller; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Service was Monday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Holland officiating. Burial was in Clover Cemetery with military graveside rites.
