Beulah V. Brown
Beulah V. Brown, 94, of Reedy, died Monday, Oct. 1 at Roane General Hospital.
She was born in Reedy, a daughter of the late James D. and Sarah E. Callow Nichols. She was a member of Reedy United Methodist Church and the Reedy Senior Citizens. She had worked at G.C. Murphy, O.J. Morrison and the Spencer Outlet Store. She was also a substitute cook at Reedy Elementary.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Everett M. “Pete” Brown; three sisters, Nancy Hill, Nellie McCoy and Bessie Buck; and two brothers, Jarrett A. and Harry J. Nichols Sr.
Service was Wednesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Leon Strickland officiating. Burial was in Eventide Cemetery.
Ronald William Conley
Ronald William Conley, 48, of Nebo, died Thursday, Sept. 27, at CAMC-General Division, Charleston.
He was born in Roane County, a son of the late William George and Janice Elaine Drake Conley. He was an employee of D&L Quality Homes, Nebo. He was a member of Nebo Baptist Church and an army veteran. He is survived by his wife, Loretta Gwin Tanner Conley; one son, Dennis Conley of Nebo; two sisters, Debbie Ray of Clendenin and Cindy McPherson of Grantsville; and one brother, Tommy Conley of Newton.
Service was Sunday at Nebo Baptist Church with Rev. Dewey Tanner officiating. Burial was in Nebo Baptist Church Cemetery. John H. Taylor Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Georgia Elmore
Georgia Taylor Elmore, 91, of Walton, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007 at home after a long illness.
She is survived by one daughter, Eula Faye “Cricket” Naylor of Walton; one brother, Opie Taylor of Valdosta, Ga.; one sister, Justine Paxton of Walton; and two grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ezra and Nora Vineyard Taylor; her husband, Fred “Poke” Elmore; one stepson, Orville Elmore; four brothers, Howard, Earl, Perry “Bill” and Emory Taylor; and three sisters, Gertrude Moffat, June Zaayer and Gatha Hunt.
Service was Wednesday at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, with Rev. Larry Jones and Rev. Timothy Ashley officiating. Burial was in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Walton.
Elizabeth R. Flint
Elizabeth R. Flint, 90, of Spencer, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2007 at home.
She was born at Wendell, a daughter of the late George and Anna Kipila Rusnak. She attended school in Barbour County and retired from Standard Supply Company after 38 years. She was a Catholic and attended Memorial United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Robert D. Flint II of Spencer and John B. Flint of Parkersburg; two sisters, Margaret McGlumphy of Clarksburg and Marian Staats of Indianapolis; one brother, John Suskovich of Indianapolis; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert D. Flint; and two sisters.
Service is 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Heilman and Rev. Robert Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Eventide Cemetery.
Sandra K. Hackney
Sandra K. Bullard Hackney, 66, of Belmont, formerly of Orma, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007 at Carehaven of Pleasants, after a short illness.
She was born at Elana, a daughter of the late Burl and Hazel Ellison Bullard. She was a member of Belmont Baptist Church. She had been an active member of the Upper West Fork Senior Citizens organization. She worked at Goodwill Industries, Charleston, from 1978-82.
She is survived by two sisters, Frances Tawney and Vicki Deweese, both of Belmont; and one brother, John Bullard of Chloe.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Orville Hackney.
Service was Wednesday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Kelly Snyder officiating. Burial was in Zion Hill Cemetery, Elana.
Mary Helen Hedges
Mary Helen Hedges, 86, of Spencer died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, at Roane General Hospital.
She was born in Cincinnati, a daughter of the late Daniel Joseph O’Conor and Ruth Bruer O’Conor. She attended public and parochial schools in Cincinnati and earned degrees from Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart in New York.
She is survived by three sons, Dan of Charleston, John of Morgantown and David of Spencer; five daughters, Marilyn Byrne of Morgantown, Christine of Spencer, Mary of Northfield, Minn., Anne of Charles Town and Kathy of Herndon, Va.; a brother, Greg O’Conor, of Boston; 23 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Grover Foster Hedges Jr. in 1986 and a son, James Gregory, in 1951 and two brothers, Daniel O’Conor Jr. and John O’Conor.
She was a founding member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Spencer, vice president of Spencer Newspapers Inc. and retired editor of the Roane County Reporter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with the Rev. Don Tranel officiating, followed by committal services at Eventide Cemetery.
Visitation at the Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home in Spencer will be from 6-9 p.m. Thursday.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Holy Redeemer Catholic Church or the Roane General Hospital Foundation are suggested.
Bronzel ‘Bob’ Hicks
Bronzel D. “Bob” Hicks, 86, of Spencer, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007 at Roane General Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born in Calhoun County. He was a retired employee of Spencer State Hospital and an army veteran.
He is survived by two sons, Randall Hicks of Orrville, Ohio, and Dewight Hicks of Marshallville, Ohio; one stepson, Larry Schoolcraft of Spencer; one stepdaughter, Carolyn Wilson of Spencer; one sister, Dora Jones of Ohio; one brother, Clyde Hicks of Ivydale; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Ronzel Hicks.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home. The body will be cremated. Burial will be later in Clover Cemetery.
Harold ‘Tater’ Hunt
Harold “Tater” Hunt, 90, of Byron, Ga., formerly of Walton, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007.
He was born at Walton, a son of the late Sherman and Osha Hunt. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers.
He is survived by two daughters, Doris “D” Harden of Byron and Pat Hubbard of Annandale, Va.; three sons, Charles of Byron, Carl of Congress, Ariz., and Arlen of Las Vegas; and seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Juanita Lee Hunt; an infant son; two brothers, Esten and Farris; and one sister, Metta Harper.
Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Board officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Walton. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today (Thursday) at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the donor’s favorite charity.
Louie B. Longfellow
Louie B. Longfellow, 64, of Spencer, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007 at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.
He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Hugh and Grace Jarvis Longfellow. He was a retired truck driver.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Nichols Longfellow; four daughters, Melinda Fincher of Houston, Anita Martin of Reedy, Lisa Chapman of Arnoldsburg and Deborah Jurkovich of Walton; one son, Christopher of Parkersburg; one sister, Edith Graves of South Carolina; one brother, Eugene Mace of California; and 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Service is 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial will be in Chapman Cemetery.
Nellie Kelley Miller
Nellie Kelley Miller, 100, of Spencer, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007 at home.
She was born in Roane County, a daughter of the late Holley and Ella Burdette Kelley. She was a member of Peniel United Methodist Church. She was a former member of Rebekah Lodge and received a 50-year certificate from the WVU Extension Homemakers in 1988.
She is survived by one daughter, Iris June Wine of Spencer; one son, Larry Stephen Miller of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman W. Miller; one son, Hershel Lee; three sisters, Blondena Cooper, Myrtle J. Miller and Opal Sheppard; two brothers, Olie and Willis Kelley; two half-brothers, Pernas and Hubert Kelley; and a stepmother, Mabel Ruble Kelley.
Service was Friday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Dr. John Hardman officiating. Burial was in Eventide Cemetery.
Beverly A. Morrison
Beverly A. Morrison, 54, of North Lawrence, Ohio, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2007.
She was born in Spencer, a daughter of the late Brown and Retta Boggs Jarvis. She worked for Imperial Plastics and attended Living Water Community Church.
She is survived by a twin sister, Barbara Cumpston of North Lawrence; four brothers, Howard Jarvis, Ronzel, Danny and David Jarvis, all of Spencer.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Harley; and one half-brother, Junior.
Service was Monday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Regina Miller officiating. Burial was in Swank Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Martha L. Parsons
Martha L. Parsons, 71, of Reedy, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2007 at Roane General Hospital.
She was born at Fairplain, a daughter of the late Lester Shorty and Dora Belle Gandee Anderson. She was a homemaker and former employee of Norris Industries and Eldercare. She attended Pleasant Grove Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Sharon S. Spangle of Arkansas, Ruth A. Shaffer of Spencer and Donna E. Starcher of Orma; two sons, Larry G. of California and Mark W. of Oklahoma; one sister, Elaine Reed of Ohio; five brothers, Veldra L. Anderson of Leroy, John Anderson of Parkersburg, Burton Anderson of Sandyville, Dean Anderson of Duncan and Keith Anderson of Ripley; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth G. Parsons, one son, David Paul; and one brother, Delbert Anderson.
Service was Monday at Pleasant Grove Church, Reedy, with Rev. Frank Vannoy officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Ruth Gertrude Rhodes
Ruth Gertrude “Gert” Rhodes, 83, of Kenna, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007 at Select Specialty Hospital, Charleston.
She was born at Higby, a daughter of the late Jacob Floyd and Dolly Jane Cobb Hersman. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Davis of Kenna and Helen Lightle of Beaver Falls, Pa.; and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donnie Estil “Buck” Rhodes.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Wolfe Creek Baptist Church, Vicars, with Robert Hargus officiating. Burial will be in Hunt Cemetery, Vicars. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home and at the church one hour prior to the service.
Earl R. Seaman Jr.
Dr. Earl R. Seaman Jr., 74, of Tucson, Ariz., died Thursday, Sept. 27, at University Medical Center in Tucson.
He was born in Reedy, the son of the late Rev. Earl R. and Myrtle Nuzum Seaman. He was a veterinarian, retired from the Ohio State Department of Agriculture. He was a 1950 graduate of Spencer High School, active in 4-H and Future Farmers of America. He completed a Bachelor of Science Degree at West Virginia University in 1954 and graduated from the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1961. He was a member of the National Association of Swine Practitioners and worked with the Ohio Specific Pathogen Free Swine Program, serving on the board of directors for both organizations. He was also a member of Alpha Gamma Rho and Alpha Psi fraternities. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara R. Seaman of Tucson; a daughter, Katherine S. Kean of Spencer; a sister, Gwendolyn E. Long of Columbus, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline S. Cooley.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Vaughan Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Dr. Timothy Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Parkersburg. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service. A guestbook for online condolences is available at vaughanfh.com.
Marjorie L. Snodgrass
Marjorie L. Snodgrass, 76, of Cottageville, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007 at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, after an extended illness.
She was born in Vienna, a daughter of the late Clyde D. and Anna Cheuvront Curry. She was a 1949 graduate of Wirt County High School and worked as a nurse’s aide at Jackson General Hospital for 11 years. She was a greeter for Wal-Mart and 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #152, Linden. She was also a charter member of Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees, support group of Local #5668. She was a former Democratic committeewoman and charter member of the Democratic Women’s Club. She attended Evergreen Hills Freewill Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Coy Snodgrass; one son, Steven Currey of Leroy; one sister, Pauline Miller of Reedy; and two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Hyson Currey; and two sisters, Helen Currey and Wilma McClung.
Service was Tuesday at Casto Funeral Home, Evans, with Pastor Mark Price officiating. Burial was in Clover Cemetery. Order of the Eastern Star service was Monday.
Hans Michael Stump
Hans Michael Stump, 25, of Pineville, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007 at University of Virginia Medical Center.
He was a son of Allen Stump of Pineville and Charmaine Stump of Coalwood, both formerly of Spencer. He attended Smyrna Seventh-day Sabbath Chapel, Wolf Pen. He worked as a dispatcher for McDowell Ambulance Authority and was a certified EMT. He was a ham radio operator, a railway enthusiast and had a special interest in church pipe organ music.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Heidi Stump of Coalwood; and grandmothers Della Sauer of Point Pleasant and Mary L. Sinnett of Spencer.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Daniel Allen Stump; and two grandfathers.
A memorial service including EMS personnel was Sept. 30 at Smyrna Chapel, Pineville.
His body was donated to the West Virginia University School of Medicine.
Emily Brooke Whited
Emily Brooke Whited was stillborn Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007 at CAMC Women and Children’s Hospital, Charleston.
She is survived by her parents, Gregory Whited and Candace Wooten of St. Albans; and four grandparents, seven great-grandparents and two great-great-grandparents.
Service was Sunday at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Rev. David Bragg officiating. Burial was in Harper Family Cemetery, Roane County.
