Lura Mae Jones Coppinger
Lura Mae Jones Coppinger, 91, of Glendale, Calif., died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009 after a brief battle with cancer.
She was born at Harmony and moved to Los Angeles when she was 21. She was one of 14 siblings. She worked for RCA Records and was a resident of Glendale for the past 20 years. She lived at Casa de la Paloma senior apartments for the last 19 years. She was a member of Lionettes of Los Feliz and Job’s Daughters. She also worked for Robinson’s department store in downtown Los Angeles for 20 years. Her interests included cooking, traveling and playing bingo, dominoes and cards.
She is survived by two daughters, Donna and Janet; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Phillip, in 1986; and her son, Donald, in 2006.
Cleo Jack Hall
Cleo Jack Hall, 74, of Arnoldsburg, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009 in Elkins.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Cleo Jack Hall and Arminda Bailey Hall. He was a timber operator and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
He is survived by his wife, Jesse; two sons, Cleo Jack Hall Jr. of Lexington, Va., and Ted Hall of Millstone; a daughter, Linda K. Hall of North Carolina; six step-children, Judy Fellar of Uniontown, Ohio, Carl D. Wright of Akron, Ohio, Michael Wright of Mogadore, Ohio, Linda Steinbacker of Kimbolton, Ohio, Roberta Triplett of Rushville, Ohio, and Nancy Thompson of Newark, Ohio; four grandchildren and 14 step-great-granchildren; and his former wife, Beulah Mae Hall of Virginia.
Service was Monday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Richard Cook officiating. Burial, with military graveside rites, was in Sand Ridge Cemetery.
Oshal May ‘Granny’ Hunt
Oshal May “Granny” Hunt, 95, of Nitro, formerly of Walton, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009 at the home of her daughter.
She was born at Ryan, a daughter of William Clinton and Zetta Hunt Harper. She was a charter member and co-founder of Walton Nazarene Church, where she served as treasurer for 25 years. She was a Christian and also attended Nitro Church of the Nazarene, since moving to Nitro with her family.
She is survived by two daughters, Saralee and Erma Raynes, both of Nitro; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Farris Hunt; a son, Robert Hunt; five brothers, Glay, Glennis “Pete”, Lakin “Doc”, Bruce and Clair Harper; four sisters, Docie Harper, Mazel Conley, Opal Scrabro and Ora Parsons; and a grandson.
Service was Dec. 4 at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel, Poca, with her grandson, Dr. Todd Raynes, and Pastor David Clark officiating. Burial was in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Walton.
Dorothea L. Cooper Kopec
Dorothea Lavis Cooper Kopec, 88, of Newtown Square, Pa., died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009 in Philadelphia.
She was born in Spencer, a daughter of the late William Homer and Bessie Bell Ball Cooper. She was a 1940 Spencer High School graduate. She graduated from Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital Nursing Education Program with honors in 1944. She entered the Navy Nurse Corps and served as an officer for the duration of World War II. She then completed two years at Glenville State College before transferring to Temple University in Philadelphia. There she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree and retired in 1980.
She is survived by her husband, Walter M. “Mike” Kopec.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl, Jack and Earl Cooper.
The body was cremated and there was no service. Her ashes will be buried on the grave of her mother and father in Spencer Memorial Cemetery. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
Ronzel L. Marks
Ronzel L. Marks, 67, of Orma, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009 at CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston, after an extended illness.
He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late James Curtis Marks and Lucy Holcomb Marks. He was a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam, was a former minister and had been a foundry worker in Orrville, Ohio.
He is survived by three sons, Eric Marks of Orma, Jeff Marks of Wooster, Ohio, and Jason Marks of Canton, Ohio; a daughter, Becky Johnson of Michigan; three brothers, Rev. Carl Marks of Arnoldsburg, Lester Marks of North Carolina, and Curtis Ray Marks of Orma; four sisters, Kathleen Sohar of Creston, Ohio, Virginia Brady of Greensboro, N.C., Wanda McCumbers of Orma and Vickie Chastain of Shoals, Ind.; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Marks; three brothers, Darrell, Delmer and Basil; and a sister, Rosalee Bennett.
Service is today (Thursday) at 1 p.m. at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Carl Marks officiating. Burial, with military graveside rites, will be in Elmira Community Cemetery, Elmira.
Doris P. Noel
Doris P. Noel, 84, of Church Hill, Tenn., died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009 at home.
She was born in Clendenin, a daughter of the late Ralph and Girtie Ulderich.
She is survived by her daughter, Betty Collier of Church Hill; a sister, Patty Summers of Clendenin; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Danny Noel; her only son, Dannel “Danny” Noel II; and her sister, Mary Meadows.
Service was Monday, Dec. 7 at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, with Rev. James Meadows and Jack Suttle officiating. Burial was in Looney Cemetery, Walton. Online condolences may be made at maticsfuneralhome.com.
Arbutus S. Taylor
Arbutus S. Taylor, 76, of Walton, died Monday, Dec. 14, 2009 at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston.
She was born in Kanawha County, a daughter of the late Charles and Florence “Flo” Good Shearer. She formerly sold Avon for 10 years, worked in various restaurants and attended Johnson Creek Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Romie L. Taylor; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Irene O’Reilly; and a brother, Edward Shearer.
Service is today (Thursday) at 1 p.m. at Jackson Cemetery on Vineyard Ridge with Rev. Anthony Ferrebee officiating. There is no visitation. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
