Charles F. Adams

Charles Foster Adams, 65, of Olympia, Wash., formerly of Spencer, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007 at Puget Sound Health Care Center, Olympia, after a long illness.
He was born in Spencer, a son of the late Gerald V. and Marie Hedges Adams. He was a 1959 graduate of Spencer High School, where he earned the distinction of being a National Merit Scholar. He was a 1963 graduate of West Virginia University and received a master’s degree in mathematics from Ohio State University in 1968. He served in the U.S. Air Force, rising to the rank of captain. He helped prepare astronauts for space travel and tested the effects of weightlessness on the body. He also taught Russian and mathematics to enlisted men and women. He worked as a systems analyst for National Cash Register and simultaneously volunteered to teach math to disadvantaged students from local high schools. He also taught computer programming at Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio. After leaving NCR, he started his own consulting firm before retiring at the age of 55. He and his wife then moved to Olympia to enjoy the outdoors. He volunteered with USDA Forest Service at Olympia National Forest and was an avid stamp collector.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Marion Erika Adams; one sister, Betty Jane Adams-Eilers of Philadelphia; one sister-in-law, Susan Adams of Morgantown; and two nieces and three nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Gregory V. Adams.
Military service and burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, Wash.

Frances Faye Alvis

Frances Faye Fields Alvis, 80, of Lewisburg, formerly of Spencer, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007.
She was born in Spencer, a daughter of the late Ralph and Dola Carpenter Fields. She was a homemaker and member of Spencer Church of the Nazarene and later Enon Baptist Church, Frankford. She worked for Gordon Memorial Hospital, Kellwood Company and Spencer State Hospital.
She is survived by one daughter, Susie Alvis Wyatt of Lewisburg; and two brothers, C.H. Fields of Marietta, Ohio, and Fred Fields of Parkersburg.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Calvin Alvis; one son, Ralph; and one grandson.
Service was Tuesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Barnett officiating. Burial was in Eventide Cemetery.

William E. Daugherty

Major William E. “Bill” Daugherty, USAF Retired, 77, of Reedy, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007 at home after a battle with heart disease.
He was born in Charleston, a son of the late Rome and Ruby Sergent Daugherty. He was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School and attended West Virginia University. He was a radar interceptor on a two-man jet fighter in the air force and retired after 20 years. He worked for 10 years at Gene’s Auto Parts and another 10 for Parts Plus.
He is survived by one son, William M. “Billy” Daugherty; one sister, Mary Treen of St. Albans; and two nieces, one nephew and two great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Mary Daugherty.
Service was Saturday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Charlie White delivering the eulogy. Burial with military graveside rites was in Rocky Branch Cemetery, Walton.

Deloris ‘Jewell’ Hersman

Deloris “Jewell” Hersman, 63, of Orma, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007 at home after a long battle with cancer.
She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of Vada Parsons Reip of Pennsylvania and the late Dalton Reip.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 43 years, William Dean Hersman; two sons, Dalton Glenn Brady of Stumptown and Joseph Dwayne of Millstone; one daughter, Deborah E. Hersman of Orma; one stepson, Michael Hersman of Spencer; one brother, Dalton Reip Jr. of Minnora; one sister, Emma Jean Conley of Pennsylvania; and seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Blaine Reip.
Service was Tuesday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. C.W. McDonald officiating. Burial was in Reip Cemetery, Orma.

Virgil ‘Budge’ Kendall

Virgil “Budge” Kendall, 74, of Sand Ridge, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007 at Charleston Area Medical Center.
Born in Calhoun County, he was a son of the late Holly and Delpha Bennett Kendall.
He is survived by his wife, Mae K. Kendall; one son, Dale Kendall of Parkersburg; two brothers, Donald of New Martinsville and Hatzel of Walker; one sister, Tessa Elliott of Arizona; and two grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Service was Tuesday at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. John Vannoy and Rev. Lewis Villers officiating. Burial was in Sand Ridge Cemetery.

George B. Lawson

George B. Lawson, 86, of Parkersburg, formerly of Spencer, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007 at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.
He was born in Coeburn, Va., a son of the late James Walker and Addie Gertrude Sulfridge Lawson. He was a World War II veteran serving in the Army Air Corps, performing in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters and earning six Bronze Stars and an Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters. He was employed with Kellwood Co. before retiring. He was a 50-year member of Moriah Masonic Lodge #38. He was a member of the 1st Christian Church in Virginia and was affiliated with Zion Baptist Church in Parkersburg.
He is survived by two daughters, Sherel Daniels of Parkersburg and Barbara Bays of Alexandria, Va.; one brother, Lowell Lawson of East Millsboro, Pa.; and one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Service was Tuesday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg. Burial was in Parkersburg Memorial Gardens.

Cale McCune Jr.

Cale McCune Jr., 81, of Leroy, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2007 at Roane General Hospital following a long illness.
He was born in Jackson County, a son of the late Cale and Minnie Starcher McCune. He was an army veteran and member of Pleasant Grove Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Eva Riggs Westfall and Althea Riggs Hess; two sisters, Rebecca Jane Wilson and Velma McCune; four brothers, Charles Homer, Robert Lee, Delmer Lee and Donald Paul; and four grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Betty June McCune, Anna Pauline McCune, Frances Ellen McCune and Mary Ann Horton; and three brothers, Darrel Wade, James William and an infant brother.
Service was Thursday at Parsons-Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, with Roger Boggess officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Reedy.

Susan Ann Tanner

Susan Ann Wise Tanner, 52, of Front Royal, Va., died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007 at home from pancreatic cancer.
She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Sherman and Sarah Jane Wise.
She is survived by three daughters, Angel Marston of New Market, Va., Pamela Graham of Middletown, Va., and Holly Richmond of Middletown; six sisters, Ted Harris, Katie Westfall, Marie Tanner, Barb Bush, Peggy Tanner and Helen Springston, all of Spencer; three brothers, Ivan and David Wise, both of Spencer, and Robert Wise of Moundsville; and five grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Grover J. Tanner; one sister, Wanda Westfall; and one brother, Bucky Wise.
Service was Thursday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Whited officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olive Cemetery.

Winnie Fae Vandale

Winnie Fae Mace Vandale, 47, of Spencer, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2007 at CAMC General Division, Charleston.
She was born in Barberton, Ohio, a daughter of Margaret A. Wayne Mace of Terra Alta and the late Denzil Mace Sr. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Jeffie Vandale Jr.; two daughters, Angel R. Nichols and Bobbie Browning; one son, Jeffrey A.; one stepdaughter, April Vandale; one brother, Denzil Jr. of Spencer; four half-sisters, Martha Lefever and Loretta McCray, both of Terra Alta, Sharon McCortney of Ohio and Debbie Mazon of Walton; three half-brothers, Jerry Mace of Gandeeville, David Wayne Mace of Buckhannon and Daniel Mace of Spencer; and five grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by four grandparents and two half-sisters.
The body was cremated. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
