Bethel ‘Betty’ Conley

Bethel “Betty” Conley, 95, of Spencer, formerly of Charleston, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009 at Golden Times Care Home, Reedy.
She was born at Servia in Braxton County, a daughter of the late James W. and Prudence Olive Lowers Conrad. She was a homemaker. She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, for over 50 years. She also taught Sunday school there for 25 years, as well as Vacation Bible School, and was a member of Elsie Simons Circle. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her caregiver and sister-in-law, Annilee Conley of Spencer; two grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Conley in 1974; a son, Leland Wood; five brothers; two sisters; and two grandchildren.
Service was Saturday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, with Bill Walton and Rev. Timothy D. “Tim” Bleigh officiating. Burial was in Eventide Cemetery.

Freda I. Cottle

Freda I. Cottle, 92, of Reedy, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2009 at Miletree Center.
She was born at Clover, a daughter of the late Boyd and Mary Dobbins Huffman. She was a homemaker and owner of Cottle Grocery Store in Reedy with her late husband, Otis G. Cottle. She was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church and previously was a member of Reedy Methodist Church for 38 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Connie L. Christ of Reedy; two sisters, Della Wolfe of Charleston and Elsie Martin of St. Albans; a step-grandson, two step-great-granddaughters and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter; three sisters, Sybil Cottrell, Mabel Long and Marie Webb; three brothers, Clarence, Carlis and Hubert Huffman; a step-grandson; and a special friend, Edna M. Christ.
Service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Good Hope Baptist Church, with Rev. John L. Price officiating. Burial will be in Board Cemetery, Reedy. Visiting hours are Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home.

Homer A. Daugherty

Homer A. Daugherty, 93, of Cambridge, Ohio, formerly of Spencer, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009 at his home.
He was born in Newcomerstown, Ohio, a son of the late Thomas Adkinson Daugherty and Eva Daugherty. He was retired after 32 years as a bus driver for Greyhound and Cambridge-Southern. He was a past Post Commander of American Legion 21 of Spencer, a member of Masonic Moriah Lodge 38 AF&AM of Spencer, past Worthy Patron of Wetzel Chapter of Eastern Star 27 of Spencer; a member of the Knights Templar & Royal Arch Masons of Ravenswood and a life member of VFW Post 5783.
He was a 1948 graduate of Andrews Business College. He attended Apostolic Tabernacle Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served in the South Pacific in World War II. His duties included amphibious landing and craft tank work. His interests included hunting, fishing, gardening, Greyhound bus tours, music and storytelling.
He is survived by a son, Daniel Daugherty of Cambridge; two daughters, Jean Daugherty and Judith Bishard, both of Cambridge; 12 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Pearl Daugherty in 2001; a daughter, Peggy Conner; a brother, Paul Daugherty; and two great-grandchildren.
Service was Wednesday at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, with Pastor Martin Hennessey and Rev. James Dull officiating. Burial was at Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge, with military graveside rites performed by Guernsey County Veterans Council. Vere ‘Buster’ Hoskins

Vere “Buster” Hoskins, 88, of Arnoldsburg died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 at Roane General Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late James A. and Lydia Whytsell Hoskins. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Iva; three sons, Larry Hoskins of Ripley and Bradley and Jeff Hoskins, both of Arnoldsburg; five daughters, Sharon Monday of Kenna, Nancy O’Brien of St. Albans, Jeanne Wagoner of Sand Ridge and Cindy Cottrell and Melissa Hoskins, both of Arnoldsburg; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Stanley A. Hoskins.
Service was Monday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Rick Metheney officiating. Burial, with military graveside rites, was in Liberty Hill Cemetery.

Georgia Connally Jordan

Georgia Connally Jordan, 84, of Dahlonega, Ga., died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009 at Gold City Convalescent Center, Dahlonega.
She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Geoffrey and Sarah Siers Connally. She was a homemaker and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Robinson of Dawsonville, Ga., and Pattee Taylor of Cottageville; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Jack Jordan.
Service was Wednesday at Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, with Steve Inman officiating. Burial was in Jackson County Memory Gardens.

Harold Robert ‘Bob’ Lawson

Harold Robert “Bob” Lawson, 55, of Ripley, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009 at CAMC General Hospital, Charleston, after an extended illness.
He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Anna Hope Moss Lawson. He worked for Roberts Brothers Circus and formerly worked for Pool Well Service. His interests included traveling the country. He was a Baptist.
He is survived by two sisters, Robin Lawson Looney and Regina Lawson Martin, both of Ripley; three brothers, Donnie and Mike Lawson, both of Stanton, Ky., and Oval Lawson of Ravenswood.
Service is today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, with Rev. Jackie Roberts officiating. The body will be cremated. Visitation is two hours prior to the service.

Heather Dawn Marks

Heather Dawn Marks, 34, of Spencer, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Douglas Marks of Spencer; her mother, Shelia J. Vandale of Spencer; daughter, Hannah Skey Beckett of Wellston, Ohio; and son, Hunter Storm Beckett of Wellston.
Service was Sunday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Homer Hensley officiating. Burial was in Snyder Cemetery, Creston.

Violet J. Price

Violet J. Price, 62, of Spencer, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009 at her home.
She was born in Roane County, a daughter of the late Hoy and Mabel Long Harris. She formerly worked at Gordon Memorial Hospital and Carper’s Restaurant in Spencer. She was a homemaker and attended Steele Hollow Community Church.
She is survived by four daughters, Judy Price of Calhoun County, Donna White of Reedy, Lora Jarvis of Left Hand and Patricia Shamblin of Tennessee; two sisters, Carolyn Smith of Otto and Frances Board of Ohio; three brothers, Melvin Harris of Cottageville and Wilbur and Raymond Harris, both of Ohio; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Price; three sisters, Edna Meighen, Freda Harris and Margaret Price; and two brothers, Jack and Bobby Harris.
Service was Tuesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Jackie Roberts officiating. Burial was in Otto Cemetery.

John Salisbury

John Buchanan Adams Salisbury, 80, of Salem, formerly of Spencer, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009 in United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.
He was born in South Charleston, a son of the late Jacob Cluster and Hattie Esther Watkins Salisbury. He was a craftsman who specialized in knife making. His interests included hunting, fishing and camping.
He is survived by three daughters, Sue Helen Hernandez of Michigan, Ruth Michele Salisbury of Wilmington, Ohio, and Patricia June Cook of Arnoldsburg; two sisters, Jenny Warren of Hollywood, Fla., and Marion Ruth Crone of Lakeland, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Macel Irene Salisbury; and a son, John Allen Salisbury.
There was no service. John H. Taylor Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Linda L. Williams

Linda L. Williams, 67, of Spencer, died Friday, Nov. 13, 2009 at Roane General Hospital after a three-year battle with cancer.
She was born in Roane County, a daughter of Elay Starcher of St. Albans. She was a Baptist and a homemaker. She was employed at Kellwood Company for 15 years, Roane General Hospital for four years and drove cars for C&O Motors and Jack Garrett Ford.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Harry “Tiny” Williams; three daughters, Darlene Williams of Batavia, Ohio, and Donna Koon and DeAnna Browning Sampson, both of Spencer; two sons, David Williams of Spencer and Bruce Fittro of Big Chimney; a sister, Nancy Sink of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Howard and Ruby Boggs who raised her; and a granddaughter.
Service was Monday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Mike King officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Beverly K. Winchell


Beverly K. Winchell, 65, of Clio, died Friday, Nov. 13, 2009 after a long illness.
She is survived by her husband, William; and several family members in Michigan.
There will be no service. Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, was in charge of arrangements.
