Clara Margaret Humphreys

Clara Margaret Humphreys, 97, of Walton, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009 at Dunbar Care and Rehab after an extended illness.
She was born in Clay County, the daughter of the late Sheridan Lee and Artie Mae Lee. She was a longtime member of Mt. Welcome Union Church, Walton.
She is survived by two sons, Richard Humphreys of Walton and Arnold Humphreys of Clyde, Ohio; a daughter, Joann Dunlap of Dunbar; a sister, Bonnie King of Canton, Ohio; a brother, Everette Lee of Bomont; 14 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Wesley Humphreys; two sons, Tommy Humphreys and Earl Lee Humphreys; a brother, Israel Lee; and four sisters, Hazel Frame, Minnie Mullins, Nellie Lee and Icie Morris.
Service was Tuesday at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, with Rev. Keith George officiating. Burial was in Humphreys Cemetery, Walton. Online condolences may be expressed at maticsfuneralhome.com.

Quentin King

Quentin King, 87, of Spencer, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009 at home.
He was born at Left Hand, the son of the late Josiah and Sallie Carper King. He was employed by the Roane County school system for 20 years and retired from the W.Va. Dept. of Vocational Rehabilitation after 20 years of service. He was also a veteran of World War II and served in the Philippines.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Wanda Louise King; two daughters, Joaquina Dye of Toledo, Ohio, and Judith Collins of Mountain Home, Idaho; a sister, Olive Ross of Left Hand; and four grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Service was Sunday at First Baptist Church of Spencer, with his nephew, Rev. Michael King officiating. Burial was in Clover Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church Roof Fund, 338 Main St., Spencer WV 25276. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Delores Virginia Lowers

Delores Virginia Lowers, 81, of Spencer, died Monday, Oct. 19, 2009 at home after a short illness.
She was born at Bomont, a daughter of the late Albert and Opal Jenkins White. She was retired from Kellwood Company with over 40 years of service and had previously worked at Spencer State Hospital. She attended Clover Community Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Karen Bateman of Spencer; a sister, Margaret Sims of Princeton, Texas; two granddaughters, five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph V. Lowers; her step-mother, Myrtle Funk White; and a sister, Betty Deel.
Service was Thursday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Danny Whited officiating. Burial was in Clover Cemetery.

Dwane Wade Swiger Sr.

Dwane Wade Swiger Sr., 81, of Gandeeville, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009 at CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston after an extended illness.
He was born in Salem, the son of the late Braden and Mabel Barker Swiger. He retired from Pennzoil Company in 1986. He was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church. He was also a U.S. Marine Corps. veteran and received a World War II victory medal.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eleanor Whited Swiger; a daughter, Rosemary Millan of Carlisle, Pa.; three sons, Dwane Wade Swiger Jr. of Gandeeville; Dallas Swiger of Ripley and Mark Swiger of Taylor, Utah; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Ray; and a brother, Leon Swiger.
Service was Wednesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Board officiating. Burial was in Grafton National Cemetery, with Marine military graveside rites.

Clement L. Tawney

Clement L. Tawney, 100, of Left Hand, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009 at Roane General Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born at Newton, the son of the late Aaron and Almond Graham Tawney. He was retired from Union Carbide Corporation with 33 years of service. He was a member of W.Va. Fox Hunters Association and a life-long resident of Roane County.
He is survived by four children, Jerome “Jerry” Tawney of Cross Lanes, Kenneth “Doc” Tawney of Myrtle Beach, S.C., LaMoine King of Left Hand and Jack Tawney of Belmont; two brothers, Jarrett Tawney of Spencer and Dan Tawney of Newton; two sisters, Mamie Haines of Newton and Ann Desposito of Albuquerque, N.M.; 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Nester Tawney in 2001; a son, Clement Joe Tawney; four brothers, Harry, Ernest, Garrison and Clark Tawney; two sisters, Mabel Rogers and Florence Dalton; and two grandchildren.
Service was Sunday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. John B. Smith officiating. Burial was in Clover Cemetery.

Shelby Young

Shelby Young, 63, of Scott Depot, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009 at his home after a short illness.
He grew up at Looneyville and graduated from Spencer High School and West Virginia University.
He was editor of The Times Record from 1977-85 and a veteran newspaperman who worked for several newspapers, including the Tyler Star News, Dominion Post, Clay County Free Press, The Jackson Star News, Wayne County News and Putnam Post. At the time of his death he was Metro Putnam reporter for Charleston Newspapers.
He was a past president of the W.Va. Press Association and a book publisher who co-authored several books, including “Killing Waters: The Great West Virginia Flood of 1985,” which covered the flood that killed 48 people.
He was a railroad aficionado and also interested in aviation. He earned his pilot’s license in the 1960s.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Jane Young; two children, Jessica Young, a graduate student at Northwestern University, and Adam Young, a student at WVU.
Service was Monday at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane. Memorial donations may be made to Putnam County 4-H c/o WVU Extension Office, 3389 Winfield Rd., Winfield WV 25213. Condolences may be expressed online at chapmanfuneralhomes.com.
