Bernice O. Griffith
Bernice O. Griffith, 95, of Spencer, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009 at Ravenswood Village after an extended illness.
She was born at Looneyville, the daughter of the late Milton and Bessie Carpenter Boggs. She was a homemaker and a member of Epling Chapel Baptist Church, Looneyville.
She is survived by two sons, Ross J. “Jerry” Griffith of Spencer and Milton S. “Bill” Griffith of Ripley; a brother, Billy Ray Boggs of Clover; a sister, Pearl Summerfield of Looneyville; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren and nine step-great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lemuel S. Griffith; two sons, Kenneth Griffith and Monzel Griffith; five brothers and one sister.
Service is today (Thursday) at 1 p.m. at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Parker officiating. Burial will be in Clover Cemetery.
James L. Hall
James L. Hall, 83, of Walton, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009 at Heartland of Charleston.
He was born in Seattle. He was a mechanic. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Finney Hall; two daughters, Liana L. Rexroad of Walton and Brenda K. Terrell of Bowling Green, Fla.; a son, Daniel L. Hall of Belle; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald I. Hall.
Service is today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, with Pastor Charles Harley officiating. Burial, with military graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post #61 of Clendenin, will be at Ryan/Rexroad Cemetery on Lynch Ridge near Walton. Visitation is at 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Lloyd ‘Wayne’ Hill
Lloyd “Wayne” Hill, 55, of Leroy, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009 at his home.
He was born at Leroy, the son of the late Lloyd Wellington “Dick” Hill and Alice “Marie” Kinder Hill. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and he was self-employed.
He is survived by four brothers, Darrell Gilpin, Dale Hill, Larry Hill and Gary Hill; five sisters, Carolyn Potts, Kathy Murphy, Cindy Burdette, Beverly Blankenship and Brenda Trigg; and numerous nephews and nieces.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Hill.

Russell D. Metz
Russell D. Metz, 55, of Lawrenceville, Ill., formerly of Calhoun County, died Friday, Oct. 2, 2009 at Lawrence Community Health Care Center, Bridgeport, Ill.
He was born in Barberton, Ohio, the son of the late Clyde and Virginia Metz. He was an oilfield driller. His interests included bluegrass music.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Rita Metz; four sons, Randy Metz of Coolville, Ohio; Russ Metz of St. Francisville, Ill.; Jeff Metz and C.R. Metz, both of Lawrenceville; a daughter, Missy of West Liberty, Ill.; a brother, Eugene Metz of Thronton; two sisters, Barb Hicks and Carolyn Metz, both of Spencer; 13 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard; and a sister, Connie.
Service was Wednesday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Carl Marks officiating. Burial was in Metz Cemetery, Sand Ridge.
Dorma E. Simons
Dorma E. Simons, 81, of Newton, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009 at Miletree Center after an extended illness.
She was born in Roane County, the daughter of the late Yale and Elizabeth Smith Dye. She was a homemaker and a member of Newton Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Roger Simons of Spencer and Larry Simons of Maysel; five stepsons, Tony Simons of Georgia, Marshall and Averill Simons, both of Ohio, Gordon Simons of Alabama and David Simons of Florida; three brothers, Bettes Dye of Spencer, Jim Dye of Newton and Lowell Dye of Ohio; a sister, Catherine Cunningham of Ohio; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ofa Simons; and five brothers, Robey, Coy, Arnold, Doy and Harold Dye.
Service was Saturday at Newton Baptist Church with Rev. Ron Fisher officiating. Burial was in Keen Cemetery, Newton. John H. Taylor Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Deborah Ann Summers
Deborah Ann Summers, 51, of Spencer, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009 at home after an extended illness.
She was born in Baltimore, the daughter of Shirley Louise Robertson Glenn of Baltimore and the late Maurice Leroy Glenn. She was a homemaker.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, James A. Summers of Spencer; a daughter, Kimberly Ann Glenn of Pinellas Park, Fla.; two brothers, Mike and Forrest Glenn, both of Baltimore; two sisters, Marcella Palner and Kathy Drevs, both of Baltimore; and two grandsons.
Service was Monday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home.
Elza O. Westfall
Elza O. Westfall, 91, of Spencer, died Friday, Oct. 2, 2009 at his home.
He was born in Roane County, the son of the late John and Verna Boggs Westfall. He was a farmer and attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dorothy Nichols Westfall; three daughters, Nancy Elliott, Sue Peffer and Barbara Smith, all of Spencer; two sons, Frank and Ken Westfall, both of Spencer; two sisters, Thelma Guthrie and Golda Milhoan, both of Akron, Ohio; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Westfall; a sister, Bertha Slaughter; and a grandson.
Service was Sunday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Davis and Rev. Phillip Lawrence officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Reedyville Road.
Frances Wright
Frances Wright, 86, of Spencer, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009 at Golden Times Home, Reedy, after an extended illness.
She was born at Clover, the daughter of the late Hayes and Effie Niday Bailey. She was retired from Kellwood Co. after 31 years of service. She was the oldest Roane County foster grandmother, with 10 years of service. She was a Christian and attended Steele Hollow Community Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Karen Harold of Rootstown, Ohio; two brothers, John and Bill Bailey, both of Spencer; three grandchildren, one great-grandson and one great-great-grandson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, J.W. “Bill” Wright in 1992; and two brothers and three sisters.
Service was Sunday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Bro. Bill Walton officiating and Al Nida assisting. Burial was in Clover Cemetery.
