Helen May Ryan Cook

Helen May Ryan Lindsay Cook, 84, of Tampa, Fla., died Sunday, June 24, 2007 in Tampa.
Born at Ryan, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Smith and Mabel Hunt Ryan. She was a veteran of World War II, serving with the WAVES after graduating at the top of her class in aircraft instrument school. She was head of Special Chemistry at Tampa General Hospital, then retired and earned a master’s degree in gerontology.
She is survived by several children, grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Edward; and a husband, Rutledge Lindsay.
Service was Friday, June 29 at Blount and Curry Funeral Home, Tampa. Burial was in Garden of Memories, Tampa.

Harley Ray Cummings

Harley Ray Cummings, 96, of Gip, died Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at hishome.
He was born at Gip, a son of the lateJames L. and Clarissa A. Gifford Cummings. He was a Baptist and a member of Elmira Missionary Baptist Church. He was a carpenter, mechanic, timberman, and workedfor 17 years on the coal tipple at the Widen mines.
He is survived by one daughter, Helen Mollohan of Servia; three sons, Leon Cummings of Bridgeport, Jerry Cummings of Gip and Keith Cummings of Martinsburg; and six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Clara E. “Katie” Kelly; three sisters, Blanche Cottrill, Julia Wilson and Sadie Cummings; and one brother, Tom Cummings.
Service was Saturday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg,with Rev. Dewey Tanner officiating. Burial was in Sugar Creek Cemetery.

Betty Barr Nelson

Betty Barr Nelson, 80, of Portland, Ore., died Wednesday, July 18, 2007, of complications from a stroke.
She was born in Barberton, Ohio, a daughter of the late Pratt and Grace Gibson Barr. She was raised at Arnoldsburg and in Akron, Ohio, where she later worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Factory. She also worked for Goodyear in Sumatra, Indonesia. She spent 30 years on the West Coast and worked at Shoreline Apartments, Bellevue, Wash.
She is survived by one daughter, Holly Nelson of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; two sons, William “Barney” Nelson of Beaverton, Ore., and John C. Nelson Jr. of Rockaway Beach, Ore.; one sister, Gretchen Robertson of San Marcos, Calif.; one brother, Burns Barr of Texarkana, Texas; and six grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John “Jack” Nelson.
Burial was Monday in Gibson Family Cemetery, Arnoldsburg. Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, was in charge of arrangements.

Hayward ‘Pete’ Sayre

Hayward M. “Pete” Sayre, 66, died Saturday, July 21, 2007 at Lake City Florida Veterans Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born at Cottageville, a son of the late Senator Virgil “Brad” and Justine Wright Sayre. He attended school in Ripley, then moved and finished school in Melbourne, Fla., before entering the U.S. Marine Corps in 1959, where he served for the next 20 years as a communications chief. He received many awards throughout his career including a Meritorious Mast for outstanding service from the commanding officer of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Cherry Point, N.C. He retired from the Marines in 1979 with the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. He then joined the Waycross Police Dept., Waycross, Ga., as an officer, worked as a 911 dispatcher and as a deputy for the Ware County Sheriff’s Dept. He was an active member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter #70, Waycross, and was a life member of the VFW. He was a Methodist.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Cocuzza Sayre, of Waycross; two daughters, Bonita Lea Sowers of Amanda, Ohio, and Justine McLaughlin of Waycross; two stepdaughters, Mary El-Kasas of Henryville, Pa., and Angela Cocuzza Gordon of Waycross; one stepson, Paul Cocuzza of Saylorsburg, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.
Service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1 at Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3 in War Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Milledgeville, Ga.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans Chapter #70, 2800 Smith Drive, Waycross GA 31503.

James Otis West

James Otis West, 80, of Spencer, died Saturday, July 21, 2007 at home.
He was born in Spencer, a son of the late Charles Dennis and Mary Ann Price West. He was a farmer and was retired from Monarch Rubber and Norris Industries. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Florence Lucille Tanner West; four daughters, Mary King of Spencer, Debbie Parker of Desota, Mo., Kathy Clevenger of Bridgeport and PamShumate of Spencer; one son, James Otis West Jr. of Charleston; seven sisters, Ruth Ray of Statesville, N.C., Virginia Raines of Mineral Wells, Irene Allen of Uniontown, Ohio, Alice Harper of Falling Rock, Marie Starcher of Morehead,Ky., and Freda Scott and JewellBoggs, both of Spencer; four brothers, Earl of Cottageville, Joe of Parkersburg and Dayton and Junior, both of Spencer;and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Oshel and Buell
Service was Monday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home withRoger Flesher officiating. Burial was in Looney Cemetery, Walton, with militarygraveside rites.

Wilma Maxine Wines

Wilma Maxine Wines, 86, of Morehead City, N.C., died Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at Carteret General Hospital.
She was a member of Spencer Baptist Temple and of Open Door Baptist Church, Morehead City.
She is survived by two daughters, Sondra Lou Gibson of Marietta, Ga., and Janie D. Burkett of Newport, N.C.; three brothers, Edward, Edmund and Larry Carpenter, all of Spencer; two sisters, Nancy Yoder of Jacksonville, Ariz., and Martha Looney of Spencer; and five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Clarence Wines; and one granddaughter.
Service was Friday at Munden Funeral Home, Morehead City, with Rev. Jerry Linebarger officiating. Local graveside service and burial was in Ward Cemetery. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
Memorial donations may be made to Open Door Baptist Church, 227 Hwy 24, Morehead City NC 28557.

Glen Charles Wyatt

Glen Charles Wyatt, 86, of Vienna, died Saturday, July 21, 2007 at home.
He was born in Reedy, a son of the late Barnett and Laura Radar Wyatt.He was retired from Corning Glass after 31 years, served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was amember of Soul Mates of Grand Central Mall, having walked over 3,000 miles. He was a member of 14th Avenue Gospel Mission where he was song leader forover 40 years.
He is survived by two sons, Jerry Wyatt of Belpre, Ohio, and Norman Wyatt of Kanawha; two daughters, Judy Hutchinson ofLittle Hocking, Ohio, and Karen Spencer of Parkersburg; one brother, Earl Wyatt of CedarRapids, Iowa; and 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he waspreceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Freda Thompson Wyatt; and five brothers and two sisters.
Service was Wednesday at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, south Parkersburg,with Pastor Tim Burch officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to 14th Avenue Gospel Mission Church or to Hospice Housecalls.

Theodore Howard Zehm

Theodore Howard Zehm, 73, of Ravenswood, died Sunday, July 1, 2007 at Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland.
He was born at Long Bottom, Ohio, a son of Beulah Evelyn Mercer Zehm Wayne and the late Frederick Howard Zehm. He was a 56-year member and deacon of Ravenswood First United Pentecostal Church. He owned Tri-County Heating and Cooling for 33 years and worked as a crane operator for Pechiney Rolled Products for 37 years before retiring. He was a member of Steelworkers Local 5668.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 53 years, Augusta “Johnnie” Zehm; two daughters, Patricia Anne Heckert of Weston and Hilda Jeane Tingler of Davisville; one son, Kenneth Andrew Zehm of Ravenswood; two sisters, Carolyn Persinger of Oakland, Md., and Patsy Carter of Spencer; five brothers, John of Beaufort, S.C., Robert of Rogers, Ark., Larry of Beverly Hills, Fla., Walter of Parkersburg and Roger of Spencer; and four grandchildren, one step-granddaughter, two great-grandchildren and one step-great-granddaughter.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one son, Theodore H. Zehm II.
Service was Friday, July 6 at Ravenswood First United Pentecostal Church with Rev. David “T.J.” Johnston officiating. Burial was in Ravenswood Cemetery. Roush Funeral Home, Ravenswood, was in charge of arrangements.
