Crystal Rae Jarvis
Crystal Rae Cross Jarvis, 54, of Huntington, formerly of Spencer, died Thursday July 5, 2007, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington.
She was born in Akron, Ohio, a daughter of David L. Cross and the late Alberta E. Dudschus Cross. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by one daughter, Angela Marie Jarvis; one son, Matthew Hunter Jarvis; two sisters, Carolyn Mae Combs and Carla Gae Cross; one brother, David A. Cross; and one grandchild.
Service was Saturday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Danny Whited officiating. Burial will be in Clover Cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Keffer United Methodist Church, 45 Banner Hill, Spencer WV 25276.
Rachel Mayo Martin
Rachel Mayo Martin, 88, of Poquoson, Va., died Sunday, July 1, 2007 at Miletree Center.
She is survived by one son, Emerson Martin Jr. of Carrollton, Va.; two daughters, Beverly Kemp of Arlington, Tenn., and Brenda Wood of Gandeeville; and four grandchildren, one step-grandchild and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Emerson Martin Sr.; five sisters and five brothers.
Service was Thursday at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson. Burial was in Parklawn Cemetery, Hampton, Va. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
Caroline J. Merrion
Caroline J. Merrion, 84, of Chloe, died Friday, July 6, 2007, in the Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Ivydale.
She was born at Mahanoy City, Pa., a daughter of the late Thomas and Dorothy Yost Degler. She was a retired seamstress and a Protestant.
She is survived by one son, Harry L. Merrion of Chloe; and two grandchildren.
Cremation service was provided by John H. Taylor Funeral Home.
Bill E. Roberts
A service for Bill E. Roberts will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 16 at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Davis officiating. Burial will be in Clover Cemetery. Roberts, 71, of Hayesville, N.C., died Saturday, May 12.
William George Stagg
William George Stagg, 78, of Ravenswood, formerly of Augusta, Ga., and of Spencer, died Monday, July 2, 2007 at the home of his son following a brief illness.
He was born in Cedar County, Iowa, a son of the late Raymond and Lura Hartsock Stagg. He was a graduate of Solon High School, Iowa, and retired from the United States Air Force in 1968 after serving in the Korean War and being stationed in France, Japan, and numerous bases around the United States. He was a former letter carrier in Spencer and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and was formerly active in Post 21 in Spencer. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 5783.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Ellen Shamblin Stagg; four sons, Raymond Stagg of Ravenswood, George Stagg of Richmond, Va., William Stagg of Spencer and Michael J. Whittington of Lexington, Ky.; one daughter, Ruth Ann Cole of Westminster, Md.; two brothers, Leslie and Donald Stagg of Iowa; six sisters, Kay Blinkley, Carol Neiterheisar, Marilyn Rouner, Margaret Seebeck and Mattie Lou Lewis, all of Iowa, and Kathleen Murray of Arkansas; and 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Stagg; two brothers, Keith and Howard Stagg; two sisters, Elsie Sward and Ruth Burnick; and one great-granddaughter.
The body was cremated. Service was Friday at Riverfront Park, Ravenswood. Burial will be later in the Grafton National Cemetery. Casto Funeral Home, Ravenswood, was in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Legion Post 21, Spencer WV 25276 or to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.
Opal E. Weaver
Opal E. Weaver, 89, of Washington, died Monday, July 2, 2007 at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born in Spencer, a daughter of the late A.S. and Emma Susan Harris Reynolds. She was formerly employed with Kellwood Manufacturing, an active member of Roane County Belles and a member of Washington United Methodist Church.
She is survived by one son, David C. Weaver of Sunbury, Pa.; one daughter, Barbara A. Curry of Washington; one brother, Charles Reynolds of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; and six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles D. Weaver.
Service was Saturday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Reverend David Calvert officiating. Burial was in Eventide Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to Washington United Methodist Church.
Opal Knotts Weekley
Opal Knotts Cottrell Weekley, 90, of Orma, died Wednesday, July 4, 2007 at Roane General Hospital following an extended illness.
She was born at Chloe, a daughter of the late Charles and Ettie Duffield Knotts. She was a homemaker and a teacher in Calhoun and Braxton counties.
She is survived by two daughters, Geneva Lucas of Kingman, Ariz., and Barbara Travis of Parkersburg; one son, Larry Cottrell of Orma; one step-daughter, Sharon Weekley Hill of Lineboro, Md.; four step-sons, Paul Weekley of Knoxville, Tenn., Lowell Weekley of Orma, Bill Weekley of Wooster, Ohio, and Carroll Weekley of Parkersburg; three sisters, Marie Knotts Arnold of Coolville, Ohio, Jean Knotts Carte of Charleston and Juanita Knotts Siers of Fayetteville; and 40 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Weekley; two stepsons, Robert and Loy Weekley; one stepdaughter, Glenna Weekley Pilgrim; two sisters, Sadie Knotts Arnold and Reva Knotts Gibson; and six brothers, Lee, Scott, Cecil, Bernard, Tommy and Charles Knotts.
Service was Sunday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Darrell Mollohan officiating. Burial was in Minnora Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1111 Lee Street East, Charleston WV 25301.
