James A. "Jamie" Cook III
James A. “Jamie” Cook III, 38, of Nitro, died Monday, Aug. 17, 2009 at Jackson General Hospital, Ripley after an extended illness.
He was born in South Charleston, the son of James A. and Marsha Rutledge Cook Jr. of Spencer. He formerly worked for J&J Construction in Maryland. His hobbies included hunting and fishing.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two daughters, Kaitlyn Renee Boggs and Brooke Ann Cook Huffman, both of St. Albans; two sons, Ashton Arya Cook of Hurricane and Triston James Fletcher of Nitro; a brother, Jason Adam Cook of Georgia; seven grandchildren, several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Garland and Belva Rutledge and James and Eurania Frances Cook Sr.
The body was cremated and no service took place. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Donald Freeman Nelson
Donald Freeman Nelson, 80, of Gandeeville, formerly of Seth, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009 at his home.
He was born in Boone County, the son of the late Freeman and Garnet Williams Nelson. He retired from Peabody Coal in 1993, was a former businessman in the timber industry, in which he supplied mines, and was a former construction worker. He was a member of the UMWA and was a Baptist.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lucinda Hubbard Nelson; two sons, Thomas R. Nelson of Seth and Bert Nelson of Orgas; three daughters, Kathy Ann Legg of Tornado, Janet Jacovith of Bedford, Va., and Darlene Kinder of Seth; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilynn Daniels.
The body was cremated and no service took place. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Charles Edward "Pete" Starcher
Charles Edward “Pete” Starcher, 70, of Spencer, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009 in Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.
He was born at Zona, the son of the late Harlan “Jim” Starcher and Nellie Gandee Starcher Kee. He was a former sales representative for Roane Grocery, as well as Midland Grocery and Goldsmit-Black in Vienna. He was a graduate of Walton High School and a member of Moriah Lodge No. 83, AF&AM, Spencer. His hobbies included hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Keffer Starcher of Spencer; a son, Gregory Starcher of Mooresville, N.C.; a daughter, Tammy Bartlett of Spencer; two sisters, JoAnn Bravo of Lost Creek and Naomi Southall of Spencer; a stepsister, Eve Southall of Spencer; two grandsons and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Maxwell; and stepfather, Joe N. Kee.
The body was cremated and no service took place. Memorial donations may be made to Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston WV 25311. John H. Taylor Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Ernestine Starcher
Ernestine Starcher, 77, of Arnoldsburg, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009 at CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston, after a short illness.
She was born in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Fred and Tressie Crawford Church. She was a homemaker and a member of Leatherbark Community Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Jacqueline “Jackie” Garrett of Spencer and Donna Reip of Reedy; a son, Gerald Starcher of Spencer; two sisters, Karen Bragg of Ripley and Christine Starcher of Arnoldsburg; two brothers, Fred Church Jr. of Beech and Victor Church of Newton Falls, Ohio; three grandsons, a granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Starcher; and an infant brother, Bernard Eugene Church.
Service was Tuesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. David Weaver and Rev. Loren Price officiating. Burial was in Starcher Cemetery in Calhoun County.
