Hazel Cline Atkinson
Hazel Cline Atkinson, 89, of Reedy, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009 at home.
She was born in Jackson County, a daughter of the late Charles F. and Esta Guthrie Cline. She was retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 39 years as a clerk and mail carrier and was also retired from the Kellwood Company. She was a member of Reedy Methodist Church, a member and past president of the Rebekah Lodge, a former West Virginia Golden Horseshoe winner, and was the last survivor of nine children.
She made her home in Reedy with Eric and Connie Ellison and their four children, Erin, Dave and Nena Hunt of Laurinburg, N.C., formerly of Reedy, Amy Ellison of Charleston, formerly of Reedy and Leeanne and Erica Ellison, both of Reedy; and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Harold William “Bill” Atkinson; four brothers and four sisters.
Services was 1 p.m. Monday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Jones officiating. Burial was in the Eventide Cemetery, Spencer.
Thomas Murray Bell
Thomas Murray Bell, 87, of Pinecrest, Fla., died Monday, Jan. 5, 2009 in Baptist Hospital, Miami.
He was born in Winnipeg, Canada, a son of the late William and Catherine Johnston Bell. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in the 2nd Army under General George Patton in Normandy on D-Day. He was retired from Florida Power and Light Company with 38 years of service.
He is survived by two sons, William Bell of Miami, and James M. Bell of North Carolina; a daughter, Tamara Marion of Wisconsin; a sister, Rita Catanzaro of New Jersey; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Lamp Bell.
Service was Saturday at Stump Funeral Home in Grantsville with Rev. Rick Metheney officiating. Burial was in Spencer Memorial Cemetery with military graveside rites by the American Legion Post of Spencer.
Verdon Price Boone
Verdon Price Boone, 87, of Florence, Ariz., formerly of Calhoun County, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009 at Casa Grand, Ariz.
He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Vernando and Lilly Price Boone. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, was awarded the Purple Heart and was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He was a former employee of Union Carbide Company and had worked in the copper mining industry in Arizona where he had resided for the past 44 years.
He is survived by a daughter, Betty Swartz of Moundsville; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Verle Virginia Kendall Boone, who died in 1978; one son, Richard Verdon Boone; and his second wife, Ilene Boone.
Service was Sunday at Stump Funeral Home in Grantsville with Rev. John Vannoy officiating. Entombment was at Sunset Memory Gardens in Parkersburg with military graveside rites by the American Legion Post of Spencer.
Richard Bowen
Richard Bowen, 79, of Reedy, formerly of Ohio, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008 at his home.
He was born in Huntington, a son of the late Charley and Nancy Hutchison Bowen. He enjoyed working on cars, including painting and mechanical work. He formerly worked for Ford Motor Company and at an aluminum foundry, both in Ohio.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Boyd Bowen; one son, Richard Edward “Bub” Bowen of Reedy; two daughters, Mary Sue Copley of Kenova and Cathy Copley of Rittman, Ohio; two sisters, Garnet Borders of Orrville, Ohio, and Delphia Copley of Creston, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois Ann Hackworth; two sisters, Ruby Stamper and Mary Runnion; and three brothers, Nathan, Clayton and Charlie Bowen.
Service was Saturday, Jan. 3 at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, with Rev. Jackie Roberts officiating. Burial was in the Young Cemetery, Linden.
Durward K. Knopp
Durward K. Knopp, 95, of Spencer died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009 at Miletree Center after an extended illness.
He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Clyde Otho and Rena Grace Board Knopp. He was a retired welder and was owner-operator of Knopp’s Garage for 31 years. He had attended Mt. Zion Community Church and the Clarence Community Church.
He is survived by one daughter, Connie Starcher of Spencer; two sons, Butch Knopp of Sandyville and Howard Knopp of Leon; two sisters, Mabel Sue Whited of Barberton, Ohio, and Emma Lou Matheny of Ripley; eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Knopp.
Service was Monday at Mt. Zion Community Church, Gay, with Rev. Donald Hinzman officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.
John H. Taylor Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Edith Rexroad
Edith Rexroad, 82, of Spencer, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2009 after a brief illness.
She was born in Progress, Braxton County, a daughter of the late Jesse and Lona Frame Rexroad. She retired from C&P Telephone Company in Charleston. During World War II, she worked in Detroit building airplanes for the war effort. She was a West Virginia Cultural Center state champion quilter and had sold quilts across the United States and Canada.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen Busch Denbigh of Spencer; two brothers, Harold Rexroad and Kenneth Rexroad, both of Gassaway; and one grandson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Bayward Rexroad; and a sister, Opal Rollyson.
Visitation will be today (Thursday) from 4-6 p.m. at the McIntosh Mansion. The body was cremated. John H. Taylor Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. William H. Street
Rev. William Harold Street, 84, of Charleston, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009 at home.
He was born at Liverpool, a son of the late Coral and Minnie Street. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran and served from 1942-45 in the 82nd Bombardment Squadron, 12th Bomb Group. He was stationed in Italy, North Africa and India for the duration of World War II. He graduated from West Virginia University in 1950, where he met his wife of 56 years, Nancy Louise McDonald Street. At WVU, he was a leader in student government, the Wesley Foundation, YMCA, and a member of Mountain Honorary. In 1953, he graduated from Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, N.J. While in seminary, he served churches in Forked River and Lanoka Harbor, N.J. He was ordained as an elder in the West Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1953 and served churches in Morgantown, Iaeger, Pineville, Kingwood, Clarksburg, Charleston, Hometown and Diamond. In 1971, he accepted a special appointment with the Charleston Housing Authority, where he worked until 1980. He worked in state government until he retired in 1986. He was an avid outdoorsman who helped to build two church youth camps: Birdhaven in McDowell County and Spring Heights in Roane County. In the summer of 1965, he led a YMCA-sponsored community-organizing program in Freed, Calhoun County. He loved camping, boating and gardening.
He is survived by his wife Nancy; two daughters, Martha Spiker of Ripley and Anne Barth of Charleston; a son, John William Street of Charleston; a sister, Kathryn Carson of Buckhannon, five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Jay Street, Ronald Street, Gerald Street and Hershel Street; and three sisters, Lois Hinzman, Evelyn Horton and Charlotte Epling.
Service was Wednesday at St. Marks United Methodist Church, Charleston. Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Roane County.

Lorna B. Truman
Lorna B. Truman, 81, of Spencer, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2009 at Roane General Hospital after an extended illness.
She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Walter Lee and Loci Idona Iceman Siers. She was a homemaker and mother. She was a member of Prudence Chapel United Methodist Church, Minnora.
She is survived by one daughter, Donna R. Hamrick of Spencer; two sons, Rickey Dale Middleton of South Carolina and James Marvin Middleton of Mt. Dora, Fla.; two sisters, Janice Parsons of Massillon, Ohio, and Lena Nutter of Alliance, Ohio; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Roscoe Middleton Sr.; one son, Donald Roscoe Middleton Jr.; one daughter, Shirley Mae Brightwell; four brothers, Glen, Paul, Randall and Willard Siers; and one sister, Loris Gallagher.
Service is today (Thursday) at 1 p.m. at John H. Taylor Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Prudence Chapel Cemetery, Minnora.
