Ralph Haden Alvis

Ralph Haden Alvis, 58, of Spencer died Monday, June 4,2007 at Boone Memorial Hospital, Madison.
He was born in Roane County, a son of Francis Fields Alvis of Spencer and Lewisburg and the late Calvin Alvis. He was a truck driver and enjoyed hunting and riding his three-wheeler.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 25 years, Sandra Shirley Alvis; two sons, Phillip Bryan and Jeff Alvis, both of Spencer; two sisters, Susie Wyatt of Lewisburg and Brenda Tanner of Madison, Ohio; and five grandchildren.
There will be no service. The body was cremated at his request. Taylor-Vandale Funeral home was incharge of arrangements.

Smith A. Carper

Smith “Smitty” A. Carper, 80, of Uniontown, Ohio, died Tuesday, May 29 after a long illness.
He was born in Spencer, a son of the late Floyd and Ocie Carper. He was a World War II veteran and served in Germany, Austria, Tripoli and Italy. He retired from B.F. Goodrich’s chemical division after 43 years of service and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he was deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a 50-year member of Akron Masonic Lodge 83 and a Royal Arch Mason in Cuyahoga Falls Chapter 225.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Martha; four daughters, Charlene Cuccio, Linda Stults, Pam Ross and Cindy Jones; two sons, Craig and J. Scott; one brother, Ronald; four sisters, Eunice Keyser, Betty Newman, Phyllis Norris and Peggy Carro; and 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Service was at Hecker Funeral Home, Uniontown, with Rev. Doug Shoup and Rev. Lanny Akers officiating. Burial was in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 820 White Pond Drive, Akron OH 44320.

Jarrett ‘Pete’ Fox

Jarrett Delmar “Pete” Fox, 83, of Spencer, died Sunday, June 3, 2007 after an extended illness.
He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Henryand Ivy Waldeck Fox. He was a lifelong resident of Roane County. He graduated from Spencer High School in 1943, then entered the U.S. Army and served in the European Theatre of World War II. He was a member of the Roane County VFWPost 5783. Pete retired from Kaiser Aluminum plant, Ravenswood, in 1983 after 23 years of service andthen devoted his time to his lifelong desire of full-time farming. He was honored by the Soil Conservation Service as Outstanding Soil Conservation Farmer of the Little Kanawha Soil Conservation District in 1984. He was a former member of the local board for Southern States Co-Op and the Roane County FSA. He was an active member of Gilboa Baptist Church where heserved several terms as trustee and deacon.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Phyllis Matics Fox; one daughter, Linda Coffindaffer of Spencer; one son, Ernie Fox of Spencer; one sister, Ruth Fox Stutler of Marietta, Ohio; and four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Bernard.
Service was Wednesday, at Gilboa Baptist Churchwith Rev. Larry Greathouse officiating. Burial was in Fox Cemetery with military gravesiderites conducted by several Roane County veterans groups. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Clarence ‘Stub’ Hickel

Clarence W. “Stub” Hickel, 84, of Clover, died Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at Roane General Hospital.
He was born at Clover, a son of the late Waitman and Mary Ethel Holland Hickel. He was a farmer and World War II army veteran where he served as technician for the 617 Engineer Equipment Company.
He is survived by one sister, Faustine Shue of Ofallen, Mo.; and one brother, Edgar Hickel of Dowling Park, Fla.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald A., Kenneth W and Benjamin J. Hickel.
Service was Friday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Leon Strickland officiating. Burial was in Clover Cemetery.

Wilma Raines Jones

Wilma D. Raines Jones, 94,of Conyers, Ga., formerly of Charleston, died Sunday, May 20, 2007, athome after a short illness.
She was born near Gandeeville, a daughter of the late Daniel and Lola Kiser Raines. She was a member of Seventh-day Adventist Church, Charleston.
In addition to her parents, she waspreceded in death by her husband, Smith Jones; one grandson, Dale Haynes; one brother, Donald Raines; and one sister, DonaEllis.
She is survived by one son, Carl E. Jones of Charleston; three daughters, Betty L. Haynes of New Castle,Va., Edna M. Cain ofLeesville, S.C., and Alice Dunlap of Charleston; four brothers,Denver Raines of Charleston,Dotson B. Raines of Pinch,David B. Raines ofSpencer and Darrell L. Raines of Warrenton,Va.; three sisters, Opal Spencer ofSpencer, Gae Buck of BonitaSprings, Fla., and Belva J. Jordan of Toledo, Ohio; and 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
Service was Thursday, May 24, at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home, Charleston, with Pastor Harold Wightman officiating. Burial was in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Walton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Sharlean Lee King

Sharlean Lee King, 52 of Shock, died Saturday, June 2, 2007 at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.
She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Clark and Maggie Wood Burrows.
She is survived by four sons, Dwight, Dewayne and Daniel King, all of Shock, and David King of Spencer; two brothers, Steve Wood and Sandy Burrows, both of Spencer; three sisters, Colleen Burrows of Shock, Darlene Nicholas of Stumptown and Marlene Webb of Big Bend; and five grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Michael.
Service was Tuesday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Carroll McCauley officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Grantsville.

Joyce A. Lawrence

Joyce Ann Lawrence, 59, of Spencer, died Friday, June 1, 2007 at her home after a brief illness.
She was born in Spencer, a daughter of the late Donald A. and Virginia Coe Jones. She was an LPN and worked for Roane General Hospital, Gordon Memorial Hospital and Akron, Ohio, hospitals.
She is survived by one son, Phillip C. McNemar; two sisters, Debra K. Bowers and Karen Jones, both of Spencer; and one granddaughter.
Service will take place later. Her body was cremated, with burial in Clover Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, 206 Beauty Street, Spencer WV 25276.

Betty Chumbley Painter

Betty Chumbley Painter, 81, of West Virginia, died Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at Miletree Center.
She is survived by one son, Earl of Fincastle, Va.; one daughter, Cheryl Basnett of Calhoun County; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Emmett Painter.
There will be no service. Taylor-Vandale Funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department, Grantsville WV 26147.

Bill E. Roberts

Bill E. Roberts, 71, of Hayesville, N.C., died Saturday, May 12, 2007 in an Asheville hospital.
He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Bronze E. and Ruth McCully Roberts. He lived most of his life in Roane County before moving to Clay County, N.C., in 1997. He was a veteran of the army and he had worked as a policeman in Spencer. He retired from Kaiser Aluminum in plant protection/EMS. He was a member of the Track Rock Baptist Church, Blairsville, Ga. He also worked with many youth groups.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Alvis Roberts; one daughter, Terry Holland of Murphy, N.C.; two sons, Michael D. Roberts and John D. Roberts, both of Spencer; one sister, Ella Mae Greathouse of Spencer; one brother, Danny Roberts of Ocala, Fla; and two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Garnet Merrill Roberts; and one sister, Nelda Rae Gregg.
Service was to take place later in Spencer. Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville, was in charge of all arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Greenville Office, 16-A Brozzini Court, Greenville SC 29615.

Dorothy Gribble Stump

Dorothy A. Gribble Stump, 65, of Walton, died Tuesday, May29, 2007 at Charleston Area Medical Center's Memorial Division.
She was born in Roane County, a daughter of the late John J.Taylor and Martha Gribble. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by three daughters, Pam Stump of Ritchie County and Leona Faye Stump and Patricia Saddler, both of Spencer; three sons, Raymond Stump of Spencer, Leon Stump, Jr. of Elkins and Michael Stump of Walton; one half-brother, Leslie Haverty of Spencer; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leon F. Stump; one daughter, FrannyStump; and one son, Jeffrey Stump.
Service was Saturday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home. Burial was in Wayne Cemetery, CalhounCounty.
