Sara Kay Hughes

Sara Kay Bailes Hughes, 63, of Spencer, died Thursday, May 24, 2007 at Roane General Hospital.
She was born in Greenbrier County, a daughter of the late George Bailes and Rebecca McMallin Bailes Starcher. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Lonnie Hughes; two daughters, Donna Kay Workman and Danielle Marie Webb, both of Spencer; one son, Donald Lee Carpenter of Spencer; one step-son, Stephen Leon Hughes of Aurora; one step-daughter, Stephanie Michelle Morgan of Clarksburg; one sister, Ramona May of Spencer; one brother, James R. Bailes of Florida; three grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, William Jennings Starcher.
Service was Saturday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Jackie Roberts officiating. Burial was in Egypt Chapel Cemetery.

Viola Mae Phillips

Viola Mae Phillips, 93, of Charleston, died Friday, May 25, 2007 at Hubbard House, Charleston, after a short illness.
She was born at Ottawa, a daughter of the late Webb and Eliza Syner Phillips. She was raised at Walton. She lived in Barboursville for 49 years until 1999 and was a member of the Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church, Barboursville. She was a World War II veteran and served as a driver for the Women’s Army Corps. She won many awards for her driving skills during her tenure in the service. She had been employed by Blue Cross Blue Shield and retired from Imperial Mattress and Bedding Company, Huntington.
She is survived by her nephew and caretaker, James Harvey of Charleston; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, William E. (Bill), Harry M. and Thomas H.; and one sister, Mary Phillips-Smith.
Services was Tuesday at Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, with Pastor Scott Ferguson and nephew Pastor Jim Phillips officiating. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.

Joetta Westfall

Joetta Westfall, 60, of Evans, died Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at home following an extended illness.
She was born in Braxton County, a daughter of the late Andrew and Mable Marie Sears Green. She attended a one-room school at Ivydale, then left home at 16 to work in nursing homes. She retired from Ravenswood Care Center in 1986.
She is survived by her husband, Leonard Samuel “Sammy” Westfall; three daughters, Juanita Marie Gouin of Lynchburg, Va., Crandale Sue Redman of Cottageville and Eugenia Kay McCoy of Ravenswood; four brothers, Kenneth Petit of Virginia, James Chris Green of Evans, Larry Allen Green of Millersburg, Ohio, and Cecil Green of Spencer; five sisters, Mary Lou Smith of Hillsboro, Mozelle Justice of Louisville, Ohio, Genevie Loucille Beckette of Millersburg, Brenda Kay Holcomb of Calhoun and Alice Ruth “Punk” Green of Spencer; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Sharon Hively.
Service was Friday at Casto Funeral Home, Evans, with Rev. Sandy Cook officiating. Burial was in Fairplain Cemetery.
