Channing D. Benson

Channing Douglas Benson, 19, of Spencer, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008 in Bethany.
He was born in Napa, Calif., a son of Douglas M. Benson of Ridgecrest, Calif., and Jennifer L. Evans White of Ravenswood. He was a 2007 graduate of Roane County High School. He was a freshman at Bethany College and member of its football team.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, David; one sister, Nicole of Somerset, Pa.; his stepfather, Lance White; and four grandparents.
He was preceded in death by one grandmother.
Service was Sunday at RCHS. Burial was in Spencer Memorial Cemetery. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

John L. Dye

John L. Dye, 91, of Spencer, died Sunday, May 18, 2008 at Roane General Hospital following a fall at home.
He was born at Stringtown, a son of the late Lothrop Fulton “L.F.” and Lexie A. Kincaid Dye. He worked as a superintendent of the Spencer Sanitary Board for 40 years and a land surveying engineer for over 40 years. He also sold insurance in Roane County for almost 40 years. He taught Sunday school for nearly 60 years and was a “Deacon Emeritus” at First Baptist Church of Spencer.
He is survived by one daughter, Marty Cassady of Dallas; one son, Carson F. of Toledo, Ohio; and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Evelyn Stemple Dye; two brothers; three sisters; and one granddaughter.
Service was Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Spencer with Rev. Michael F. “Mike” King officiating. Burial was in Eventide Cemetery. John H. Taylor Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Spencer, “Elevator Fund” 338 Main St., Spencer WV 25276.

Wanda Keturah Fox

Wanda Keturah Fox, 58, of Orma, died Saturday, May 17, 2008 at home after an extended illness.
She was a daughter of the late Gordon E. and Trula F. James Cornett.
She is survived by her husband, Charles R. Fox; five siblings, Shirley Stewart, Beverly Lewis, Billie Aukshun, Brenda Shenk and Gordon E. Cornett Jr.
The body was cremated. Matheny Whited Funeral Home, Elizabeth, was in charge of arrangements.

Bess Marie Kelly Kessler

Bess Marie Kelly Kessler, 84, of Charleston died Sunday, May 11, 2008 after a short illness.
She worked for the quartermaster general during World War II and at Mathews Printing, Charleston, for 20 years before retiring.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Joe Dennis Kessler; one sister, Polly Cross of Bushnell, Fla.; two brothers, Smith Kelly of Looneyville and Robey Kelly of South Charleston; and one stepdaughter, Rita Adams of Parma, Ohio.
Service was Wednesday, May 14 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Rev. Dr. Okey Harless Jr. officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Jack Lee Martin

Jack Lee Martin, 50, of Walton, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008.
He was born in Charleston, a son of Jackie and Marie Weikle Martin of Walton. He was a carpenter and army veteran.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Donna Burdette of Procious, Patricia Vickers of Frame and Marie Alls of Sissonville; and three brothers, Bob and Steve, both of Walton, and Raymond of Smithville, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Martin.
Service was Saturday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Legg officiating.

Gloria Louise Mueller

Gloria Louise McDonald Mueller, 71, of Shepherdsville, Ky., died Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at Audubon Hospital, Louisville, Ky., after a long illness.
She was born at Morganfield, Ky., a daughter of the late George Todd and Edna P. Morehead McDonald.
She is survived by three sons, Jeffrey of Shepherdsville, Joesph of Mt. Washington, Ky., and Michael of Louisville; daughters, Tanya “Tammy” Haysley of Louisville, Lori Bunner of Spencer, Judith Parker of New Albany, Ind., Barbara Mueller of Sedalia, Mo., and Christina Rich of Louisville; one brother, George McDonald of Winston Salem, N.C.; one sister, Sally McDonald of Louisville; former husband W. Ed Mueller of Spencer; and 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Walter Edward Mueller II.
Service was Sunday at McFarland-Troutman-Proffitt Funeral Home, Mt. Washington.

R.A. ‘Dick’ Roberts Sr.

Robert Alan “Dick” Roberts Sr., 72, of Kernersville, N.C., died Saturday, May 10, 2008.
He was born at Belle. He was an air force veteran, achieving the rank of senior master sergeant. He was a beekeeper and attended Sedge Garden United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Vicky; one brother, James of West Virginia; four children, Richard “Rick” of South Dakota, Nancy of Maryland, Ronald “Joe” of North Carolina and Rebecca Hazen of Massachussetts; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorcas Aretz and Nancy Herring.
The body was cremated. Graveside service will be Monday at Roberts Family Cemetery with Rev. Robert Leonard officiating. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Doris Schwender-Sayers

Doris Marie Schwender-Sayers, 56, of Palm Beach, Fla., died Thursday, May 15, 2008 from cancer.
She is survived by five brothers, Roger of Bryan, Ohio, Richard of Akron, Ohio, John of Spencer, Bruce of Elkview and William Larry Burgess of Spencer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Oris W. and Erma M. Schwender; and one brother, Donald.
Service is 2 p.m. Saturday at Otto Advent Christian Church. Burial is in Otto Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston WV 25311.

Madeline D. Summers

Madeline D. Canterbury Summers, 83, of Clendenin, died Monday, May 19, 2008 at Miletree Center, after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
She was born in Roane County, a daughter of the late Charles Ola Canterbury and Bertha Catherine Igo. She was a retired owner-operator of Summers Restaurant, Clendenin, attended Christian Church and was a Sunday school teacher. She was a life member of VFW Post 8516, Ladies Auxiliary, a member of Seniors Friends St. Francis Hospital and 55 Plus CAMC.
She is survived by one daughter, Jo Ann Summers Hunt; and six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Thurman O. Summers.
Service is 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Myers Funeral Home, Elkview, with Rev. Marvin Welch officiating. Burial is in Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney. Visitation is two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Miletree Center, 825 Summit St., Spencer WV 25276.

Kathleen Workman

Kathleen Workman, 83, of Spencer, died Friday, May 16, 2008, at Miletree Center after an extended illness.
She was born in Charleston, a daughter of the late George and Myrtle Young Workman. She was a homemaker and member of Johnson Creek Baptist Church, Walton, where she was a former clerk and Sunday school teacher.
She is survived by two foster brothers, Mayford Jackson of Clendenin and Tommy Jackson of Spencer.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Allen and Giles; one sister, Irene Teel; foster parents, Ovie and Myrtle Jackson; and two foster brothers, Larry and Richard Jackson.
Service was Monday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. David Smith officiating. Burial was in Jackson Cemetery, Walton.
