Brian W. Canterbury

-- Brian William Canterbury, 24, of Chesapeake, formerly of Walton, died Monday, April 23, 2007.
He was vice president of Cal Corp Inc., Montecal Inc. and was a student at W.Va. State University. He held a second-degree black belt in Kosetumi Sei-Kan and was a karate instructor. He competed in the fourth Irish Cup in 2001, bringing home a gold medal. In 2006 he competed in the first International Kosetumi Sei-Kan Tournament where he received gold, silver and bronze medals. He was also an Eagle Scout.
He is survived by his parents, Calvin and Cathy Canterbury of Clendenin; grandparents, Betty Holcomb of Clendenin, Bill and Gertha Walker of Gandeeville and Bonnie Canterbury of Walton; and one sister, Andrea Nicole “Nikki” Kelley of Ripley.
Service was Wednesday at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, with Pastor Charles Larue officiating. Burial was in Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney.

Robert J. Church

--Robert J. Church, 75, of Orma, died Thursday, April 19, 2007 at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.
He was born in Washington County, Ohio, a son of the late Leman and Ova M. Gregg Church. He was retired from Union Carbide Corp., Marietta, Ohio.
He is survived by six sons, Bob Church of Albany, Ohio, Bill Church of Stewart, Ohio, Gary Church of Tuppers Plains, Ohio, Larry Church of Frost, Ohio, Dana Church of Guysville, Ohio, and Ted Church of Vincent, Ohio; four sisters, Lorraine Callahan of Florida and Noama Church, Christine Price and Ruth Dornan, all of Parkersburg; one brother, Fred Church of Vincent, Ohio; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a special friend, Opal Valentine.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Service will be Saturday at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial will be in Hardman Chapel Cemetery, Smithville.

George P. Dietz

--George P. Dietz, 79, of Spencer, died Monday, April 23, 2007 at Roane General Hospital.
He was born in Kassel, Germany, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1957, becoming a citizen in 1962. He lived in New Jersey before moving to Liverpool and then Spencer in 1998. He worked as a real estate broker until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Elsbeth “Betty” Dietz; one son, Rainer “Ray” Dietz of Spencer; one daughter, Barbara Smith of Spencer; and one granddaughter.
Service and burial will be later at Eventide Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Raider Marching Band, 1 Raider Way, Spencer WV 25276.

Pauline I. Hardway

--Pauline Irene Keener Hardway, 87, of Spencer, died Friday, April 20, 2007 at Roane General Hospital.
She was born in Clay County, a daughter of the late Daniel “Dan” Elsworth and Retta Ethel Sharp Keener. She was a homemaker. She cooked in local restaurants, worked at Roane General Hospital and Gordon’s nursing home and was a caregiver to children and the elderly. She was a Baptist.
She is survived by three daughters, Delores Gray of Chelsea, Mich., Loretta Duncan of Spencer and Karen Murphy of LaPlata, Md.; two sons, James and Fred Hardway, both of Spencer; one sister, Louise Buzzard of East Liverpool, Ohio; two brothers, Ezra and Junior Keener, both of East Liverpool; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred L. Hardway; two brothers, John and Harry Keener; and four sisters, Eunice Kniesly, Hettie Rose, Avis and Minnie Keener.
Service was Monday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Jones officiating. Burial was in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Zona.

Preston McCumbers Sr.

--Preston Virgil McCumbers Sr., 81, of Burnsville, died Thursday, April 5, 2007 following an extended illness.
He was born at Nicut, a son of the late Thomas Andrew and Edna Ernie Hardway McCumbers. He was retired from Mattress Factory, Parkersburg, and was a Baptist.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Crites McCumbers of Burnsville; six sons, Thomas of Houston, Charles of Clarksburg, James of Spencer, Michael of Moundsville, Robert of Mt. Zion and Mark of Ohio; seven daughters, Barbara Green of Parkersburg, Ruth Mitchell of Sand Fork, Connie McCumbers of California, Brenda Smith of Ritchie County, Tami Bell of Grantsville, Geraldine Sensesman of Hershey, Pa., and Regina McCumbers of Clarksburg; four step-daughters, Tammie Sue Green of Parkersburg, Drema McCumbers of Mt. Zion, Betty Jean and Melissa Crites, both of Webster Springs; one brother, Rondle McCumbers of Spencer; two sisters, Edith McCumbers of Spencer and Velma Norman of Glenville; 32 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two wives, Ruth McElfresh McCumbers and Carol Barton McCumbers; two sons, Preston Virgil McCumbers Jr. and Ronnie Lee McCumbers; and two sisters, Thelma Gay Low and Vera Maye Cottrill.
Service was Tuesday, April 17 at Ellyson Mortuary with Pastor Bryan Groves officiating. Burial was in Messenger Cemetery, Little Ellis.

Nina L. Mendenhall

--Nina L. Mendenhall, 94, of Barberton, Ohio, formerly of Arnoldsburg, died Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at Pleasant View Health Care Center, Ohio.
She was born in Millstone, a daughter of the late Homer and Maude McCulty Lynch. She was a Calhoun County High School graduate and retired from J.L. Hudson, Detroit.
She is survived by one sister, Helen Blanchfield of Barberton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil; three brothers, Donald “Don,” Robert “Bob” and Darwin “Bus” Lynch; two sisters, Vera Beaver and Leah Sturm; and special nephew, Mark Blanchfield.
Service and burial will be Friday at Sand Ridge Cemetery with Rev. Robert Shannon officiating.

Delphia M. Parsons

--Delphia M. Parsons, 96, of Orma, died Thursday, April 19, 2007 at Braxton County Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Braxton County. She attended Orma United Methodist Church, was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star at Linden and a homemaker.
She is survived by one daughter, Juanita Byard of Amsterdam, Ohio; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, S.G. Parsons; and two daughters, Maysel Clevenger and Naomi Porter.
Service was Monday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Carl Marks officiating. Order of the Eastern Star service was Sunday at the funeral home. Burial was in Orma Cemetery.

Opal M. Rhodes

--Opal M. Rhodes, 69, of Spencer, formerly of Walton, died Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at home.
She was born in Roane County, a daughter of the late Kenny and Emma M. Moore Jackson. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by two daughters, Brenda Jones and Linda McClanahan, both of Walton; one sister, Phyllis Marks of Walton; four brothers, Johnny Jackson of Elkview, Carl Hively of Charleston, Carlos Hively of Elkview and Gary Rexroad of Walton; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Service and burial was Thursday, April 19 Jackson Cemetery, Walton Ridge, with Rev. Charles Shafer officiating.

Jerry Berton Williston

--Jerry Berton Williston, 64, of Amma died Friday, April 6, 2007, at Hubbard Hospice House after a long illness.
He was a son of the late Bert Woodrow and Edith Amy Campbell Williston. He was an army veteran of the Vietnam War and attended Landmark Baptist Church. He worked in road construction for years before going into business for himself, owning Jerry’s Small Engine Repair Shop.
He is survived by his wife, Anetta Hager Williston; three daughters, Angela Williston of Amma and Rose and Helen Williston, both of Texas; one son, David Willliston of Weston; four sisters, Mary Williston and Sandy Stalnaker, both of Weston, Donna LaCaria of Virginia and Lucille Williams of Falls Mills; and several grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Williston.
Service was Monday, April 9 at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, with Pastor John Davis officiating. Burial was in Clover Cemetery with American Legion Post 61 performing military graveside rights.

• Memorial service

--There will be a memorial service for Jim Grothe Sunday, April 29 at the Upper West Fork Community Park at Chloe, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Grothe, a Chloe resident, died March 9 at the age of 64 in Oklahoma.
