Floyd F. “Pat” Garrett

Floyd F. “Pat” Garrett, 72, died Saturday, May 16, 2009.
He was born at Liverpool, a son of the late William Donald and Rhoda Nay Garrett, formerly of Reedy.
He lived most of his life in Akron, Ohio.
He is survived by two sons, Scott and Mark Garrett, both of Akron; two brothers, Donald Buddy Garrett of Ashville, Ohio, and Ray Garrett of Spencer; two sisters, Opal Houchin of Ravenswood and Hope Bragg of Akron; two grandsons; two great-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; and two brothers, Charles Garrett, formerly of Reedy, and Earl Garrett, formerly of Norwalk, Ohio.
Service was Saturday at Newcomer Funeral Home in Akron. Burial was in Hillside Memorial Park, Akron. Condolences may be expressed online at NewcomerAkron.com.

Oscar Miller

Oscar Miller, 94, of Minnora, died Sunday, May 24, 2009 at Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Ivydale.
He was born at Chloe, a son of the late Homer and Ruie Hall Miller.
He is survived by a brother, Ottice Miller of Minnora; and a great-niece.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Delphia Davisson; and two brothers, Ezra and Greenville Miller.
Service is today (Thursday) at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial will be in Clark Jarvis Cemetery, Chloe.

Audie Minney

Audie Minney, 73, of Dalton, Ohio, formerly of Orma, died Monday, May 25, 2009 at Shady Lawn Health Care Community, Dalton.
He was born at Orma, a son of the late Ira and Myrtle Hess Minney.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and former employee of Spartan Enterprises of Barberton, Ohio.
He is survived by a son, Richard Lee Minney of Orrville, Ohio; a sister, Darlie Schoolcraft of Dalton; two brothers, C.A. Minney of Spencer and George Siers of Conneautville, Pa.; two grandsons; one granddaughter; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Linney Marie McCune Minney; a daughter, Debra K. Minney Dailey; four half-brothers; and four half-sisters.
Service is today (Thursday) at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Orma. Burial will be in Ebenezer Church Cemetery. Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg was in charge of arrangements.

Nellie O. Mitchell

Nellie O. Mitchell, 100, of Asheville, N.C., formerly of Spencer, died Sunday, May 24, 2009 at the Brooks-Howell Home, Asheville.
She was born at Spencer, a daughter of the late Charles and Margaret E. Santee Mitchell.
She was a deaconess in the United Methodist Church Ministries, serving for 42 years. She returned to Spencer after a family member’s illness and conducted a church kindergarten at St. John’s United Methodist Church for 16 years. She attended Lucy Myer Training School for deaconess training and later graduated from Morris Harvey College (now University of Charleston) in 1950. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Asheville, and a former member of St. John’s UMC and Speed UMC.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, as well as caregivers, Joe and Sheryl Pauley of Spencer.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lucy Grant; six brothers, Roscoe, Irvin, Walter and Ottie Mitchell, as well as two infants.
Service is today (Thursday) at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, with Rev. Randy Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Swank Cemetery, Speed.

William Preston “Bill” Tanner

William Preston “Bill” Tanner, 61, of McConnellsville, Ohio, died Saturday, May 23, 2009 at his home.
He was born in Spencer, a son of the late Dewey and Kathleen Walls Tanner.
He was an employee of Asplundh and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
He is survived by his wife, Patti of McConnellsville; three daughters, Denise Tanner and Sheri Koon-Tanner, both of Spencer, and Regina Jurkovich of Amma; one son, William Tanner of Ravenna, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Holli Harold of Middletown, Ohio; one stepson, David Harold of McConnellsville; five brothers, Jack Tanner of Pomeroy, Ohio, Don Tanner, Orval Tanner and Dewey Tanner, all of Spencer, and Roger Tanner of McConnellsville; three sisters, Rose Heath of Windsor, Ohio, Shirley Keener of Spencer and Ruby Patty of Leroy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Sharp, Wilda McClung and Mildred Richman; and one brother, Grover Tanner.
Service will be Sunday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Virgil Leo “Jack” Walker

Virgil Leo “Jack” Walker, 88, of Spencer, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Roane General Hospital.
He was born at Richardson, a son of the late Fred and Ona Sutphin Walker.
He was a retired foreman for Pace Pipeline Co. He was an active church member for over 50 years, teaching Sunday school and leading devotionals. He attended Cherry Valley Community Church near Spencer. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, having served with Company C, 586th Signal Aircraft Warning Battalion.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Walker of Spencer; a son, Frederick Lee Walker of Clendenin; two stepsons, David Armentrout of Beckley and Danny Armentrout of Kenna; two stepdaughters, Helen Paxton of Dalton, Pa., and Brenda Scranta of Tunkhannock, Pa.; two grandchildren; and nine step-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie Nicholson Walker; four brothers, Hershel, Hollie, Bennie and Burl Walker; and one sister, Maxine Burdette.
Service was Saturday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Davis officiating. Burial was in Walker Cemetery, Spencer.
