Retha M. Bancroft
--Retha M. “Peggy” Bancroft, 87, of Glenville died Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.
She was a daughter of the late Okey and Cleo Rogers, formerly of Shock. She was an active member of the Church of Christ. She enjoyed playing mountain, folk and country music. She served for 20 years in the Senior Companion Program.
She is survived by three children, Diana Miller of Shock, Raymond Charles Bancroft Jr. of York, Pa., and Edna Marie Frymier of Newberne; three brothers, Richard Rogers of Martin, Tenn., Randolph Rogers of Dandridge, Tenn., and Rexie Rogers of Tampa, Fla.; and six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray and Ralph Rogers; one sister, Ruth Manz; one child, an infant son; and one grandson.
Service was Saturday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg with Evangelist Vernon Kerns officiating. Burial was in Miller Cemetery, Shock.
James Dean Carpenter
--James Dean Carpenter, 45, of Spencer died Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at Cabell Huntington Hospital.
He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Clyde and Freda Ashby Carpenter. He was a laborer.
He is survived by three daughters, Jamie Koon, April Jones and Sierra Carpenter, all of Spencer; three brothers, Johnny Carpenter of Spencer, Randall Carpenter of Colman, Mich., and Ronnie Carpenter; two sisters, Carolyn Carpenter of Spencer and Barb Cross of Calhoun County; and four grandchildren.
Service was Saturday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Clarence E. McKown officiating. Burial was in Mt. Herman Cemetery, Harmony.
Eugene R. Conley
--Eugene R. Conley, 75, of Mogadore, Ohio, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007.
He was born in West Virginia and moved to Akron after his
military service in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company after 40 years of service.
He is survived by one son, Greg; three brothers, Brooks, Roscoe and Charles; and one grandson and two great-grandsons.
He was preceded in death by brothers, William George, Darius, Jennings, Howard, Harold, Clyde, Spencer and Lawrence; and one sister, Geneva.
Service was Monday, Feb. 26, at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, Mogadore, Ohio. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Randolph, Ohio.
Agra Lucille Fowler
--Agra Lucille Fowler, 92, of Ocala, Fla., died Tuesday, March 13, 2007.
She was a daughter of the late Fell and Carrie Stump, formerly of Arnoldsburg, and lived in Detroit and other parts of Michigan until 25 years ago when she moved to Florida. She worked as a secretary and helped set up the first computer system for H.J. Heinz Co. in Jacksonville, Fla.
She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Ruth of Summerfield, Fla.; one son, John Fowler of Pickney, Mich.; and seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clay Fowler; two brothers, Abe and Hays Stump; and two sisters, Ruby Stump and Fostine S. Craddock.
Service was Saturday, March 17, at Hier’s-Baxley Funeral Home, Ocala with Rev. Samuel Clements officiating. Burial was in Highland Memorial Park, Ocala.
Arlie ‘Red’ Malone
--Arlie Elden “Red” Malone, 60, of Spencer died Saturday, March 24, 2007 at his home.
He was born in Logan, Ohio, a son of the late Arlie and Garnet Riffle Malone. He was an oil rigger and a timberman.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Sandra Smith Malone; nine daughters, Rebecca Ashburn, Barbara Davis, Terry Ashburn, Monica Ashburn, Samantha Malone, Gayla Malone, Jessie Spencer, Dessie Nottingham and Shawna Malone; two sons, Arlie Malone Jr. and Romen Malone; one sister, Linda Woodrum; and 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph and Blanche Malone; one daughter, Tammy June Malone; one brother, Eddie Malone; and one grandchild.
Service was Tuesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Smith Epling officiating. Burial was in Hebron Cemetery near Spencer.
Thelma Leah Richards
--Thelma Leah Yoak Richards, 95, of Buckhannon, formerly of Glenville, died Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.
She was born at Apple Farm near Sand Ridge, a daughter of the late Lloyd and Mary Adams Yoak. She lived her early years in Calhoun County and 17 years in Roane County. She was an active member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, Glenville and the Gilmer County Senior Citizens, where she served as a reader to residents at the local nursing home. She was a homemaker and a noted good cook, seamstress and quilt maker. She cooked for the elementary school hot lunch program at Shock in Gilmer County and Morning Star in Roane County. She also worked at the Conrad Hotel in Glenville.
She is survived by four sons, Dr. Graydon Edward of Marshall, Mo., Eugene Carl of Ravenswood, Harold of Spencer and Herbert Charles of New Haven; two daughters, Mary Ann Bishop of Cool Ridge and Kathryn Lea Black of Buckhannon, with whom she resided; two brothers, Bernard and Victor Yoak, both of Ripley; and 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Wilma Hersman, Etna Altizer and Ruth Hardman; and two brothers, Lloyd Jr. and Vere Yoak.
Service was Sunday at Otterbein United Methodist Church with Rev. Hugh Murphy officiating. Burial was in Meadows Cemetery, Normantown.
Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, was in charge of arrangements.
The family requests donations to the Gilmer County Senior Citizens.
Maysel L. Stalnaker
--Maysel L. Badgett Stalnaker, 97, of Minnora died Monday, March 26, 2007 at her home.
She was born at Minnora, a daughter of the late Calvin and Alice Parsons Jarvis. She was a longtime member of Milo Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Oeta Davis of Bristol, Tenn., and Carol Hudson of Roanoke, Va.; two sons, Oval Badgett of Newton Falls, Ohio, and Loy Badgett of Minnora; four brothers, Carl Jarvis, Gary Jarvis, both of Minnora, Bill Jarvis and Charter Jarvis, both of Chloe; five sisters, Rilma Chandler of South Carolina, Geneva Badgett of Nobe, Nell Deweese of Spencer, Bonnie Ellison of Orma and Madeline Hardway of Chelyan; and 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Greely Badgett in 1970; second husband, Euell Stalnaker in 1987; three sons, Randall Badgett and two infants; one foster son, Dale Starcher; three brothers, Cecil Jarvis, Paris Bruce Jarvis and Curt Jarvis; and two sisters, Dessie Jett and Olive Grace Deweese.
Service is 11 a.m. Friday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg with Rev. Rick Metheney officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Clark Jarvis Cemetery, Chloe.
Edna Parks Wotring
--Edna Parks Wotring, 93, of Texas, a former Spencer resident, died Friday, March 2, 2007 at Marshall Manor Nursing Home, Marshall, Texas.
She was born at Bellerun, a daughter of the late James Alva and Lydia Elliott Parks. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Marshall since 1965. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and United Methodist Women for 50 years.
She is survived by four daughters, Nancy Wotring Walker of Midwest City, Okla., Jane Stevens of Denver, Edna Margarette Wotring of Marshall and Susan Wotring Beaudet of San Antonio; one son, Dr. Earnest Wotring Jr. of Edmond, Okla.; and 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Service was Wednesday, March 7, at Meadowbrook Chapel with Rev. Don Dodge officiating. Burial was in Algoma Cemetery North, Marshall.
Meadowbrook Funeral Home, Marshall, was in charge of arrangements.
