Frances Eleanor Davis
Frances Eleanor Davis, 68, of Grafton, Ohio, died Sunday, April 26, 2009 at her home following an extended illness.
She was born at Walton, a daughter of the late Audra Evans and fathers, Ralph Evans and James Harris. She was employed by General Motors in Elyria, Ohio, and Parma, Ohio, plants as a technician for 37 years, retiring in 2004. She was a Baptist.
She is survived by her husband of eight years, Baron “Bud” Burkey; two sons, Dennis Davis of Grafton, and Kenneth Davis of Elyria; two stepsons, Brian Burkey of LaGrange, Ohio, and Glenn Burkey of Moreland, Ga.; two stepdaughters, Sherri Baker and Rosemary Hall, both of Elyria; two brothers, James Evans and Roger Evans, both of Elyria; two sisters, Ruby Atkinson and Virginia Lucas, both of Hurricane; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Eugene Evans; and a sister, Rosalie Fletcher.
Service will be today (Thursday) at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Board, cousin of the deceased, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Spencer.
Ines Madge McKown
Ines Madge McKown, 88, of Beech, died Sunday, April 26, 2009 at her home.
She was born at Beech, a daughter of the late Grover and Stella Matheney Houchin. She was retired from Kellwood Company with 25 years service. She also worked at Goodyear Aircraft during World War II. She was a member of Beech United Methodist Church and enjoyed quilting and gardening.
She is survived by two sons, Bradley McKown and Wendell McKown, both of Orma; two daughters, Shirley Jett of Doylestown, Ohio, and Karen Ellison of Orma; two sisters, Opal Jett and Ellen Marie McKown; one brother, Grover Houchin Jr.; 12 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harley McKown; one son, Donald E. McKown; two brothers, Forrest and Clyde Houchin; and three sisters, Ruth Simmons, Eula Kerns and Bernice Laughlin.
Service was Wednesday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg. Burial was in the Bailey Cemetery, Beech.
Opal Virginia Myers
Opal Virginia Myers, 91, of Amma, died Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, following a short illness.
She was born at Gabe, a daughter of Willie M. and Lessie M. Phillips Lowe. She was a Christian and the oldest surviving member of Pine Grove Memorial Church at Amma. She made apple butter every year as a benefit for the church. She was also a cook at Amma Grade School until it closed. She enjoyed gardening and quilting.
She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Naylor of Walton; sons, Russell Myers of Navarre, Ohio, Robey Myers of Amma, Benny Myers of Poca; brother, John Lowe of Spencer; sisters, Madelyn Elswick of Amma, Betty Grady of Hurricane, Wanda Elswick of Sandyville; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Lincoln G. Myers; sisters, Jeminah Jane Lowe, Patricia Louise Lowe, Gatha Lowe Payne, Maxine Lowe Haynes and Faye Lowe Gandee; and brothers, Orville Lee Lowe, William Lowe Jr. and Bobby Joe Lowe.
Service will be Saturday at Pine Grove Memorial Church with Rev. Jack McCune and Kenneth Boggs officiating. Burial will be in the Myers/Jarrett Cemetery, Amma.
Memorial donations may be made to the Pine Grove Memorial Church.
Myers Funeral Home, Elkview, is in charge of arrangements.
Howard A. Starcher
Howard A. Starcher, 60, of Ravenswood, formerly of Spencer, died Thursday, April 23, 2009 at Jackson General Hospital.
He was born at Zona, a son of the late Cecil and Wilma Sleeth Starcher. He formerly worked for Cardinal Concrete, May Brothers, Crihfield Homes and was an over the road truck driver. He attended Roane County schools.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Cain Starcher; two sons, Robert and Stephen Starcher, both of Spencer; a step-daughter, Sabrina Whytsell of Arnoldsburg; two step-sons, Gary Wager of Fairmont, and Ryan Wager, with the U.S. Air Force in Nebraska; four sisters, Mary Bailey of Chloe, Ruth Casto and Edie Miller, both of Spencer, and Frances Lane of Ravenswood; three brothers, Robert “Bob” Starcher of Zanesville, Ohio, Bill Starcher of Spencer, and Glen Starcher of Ripley; and eight grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Richard Neil Starcher; and two brothers, Jerry and Webster Lee Starcher.
Service was Tuesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Davis officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home for funeral expenses.
Edith M. Tanner Whiting
Edith M. Tanner Whiting, 89, of Spencer, died Friday, April 24, 2009 at Roane General Hospital in Spencer.
She was born in Roane County, a daughter of the late Edward and America Tucker Tanner. She was retired from Kellwood Company and was a member of Boggs Fork Community Church.
She is survived by five children, Steve Whiting and Roma Whiting, both of Spencer, Linda Stalnaker of Palestine, Brenda Cain of Grantsville, and Donzel Whiting of Ripley; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hershel Ray Whiting; a brother, Donzel Tanner; and four sisters, Eleanor Tanner, Elsie Greathouse, Tressie McCune and Lucille Essig.
Service was Monday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, with Rev. Charles Davis officiating. Burial was in Short Cemetery on Boggs Fork.
