Roy M. Buchanan
Roy Maxwell Buchanan, 89, of Parkersburg, died Monday, April 6, 2009 at St. Joseph Hospital.
He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Alexander L. and Gertrude Keffer Buchanan. He was retired from O. Ames Company after 42 years of service, as a machinist. He attended 14th Avenue Gospel Mission Church. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing gospel music. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Gedney E. Boggs Buchanan; two daughters, Patsy Smith and Virginia Nicholson, both of Parkersburg; one son, Harvey Buchanan of Parkersburg; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Holly Bill, Mayford, Urie, Bernard, Orland, Carl and Ray Buchanan; and two sisters, Francis Sampson and Virginia Buchanan.
Service will be Friday at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, south Parkersburg with Pastor Tim Burch and Pastor William Law officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memory Gardens with full military rites by American Legion Post 15.
Beverly V. Elberfeld
Beverly Vandale Elberfeld, 67, of Gallipolis, Ohio, died Sunday, April 5, at Holzer Medical Center.
She was born in Spencer, a daughter of the late Charles Beverly and Helen Goad Vandale. She was a homemaker and a charter member of New Life Lutheran Church of Gallipolis, and attended West Virginia University.
She is survived by daughters, Rebecca Bliss Elberfeld Hoge of New Knoxville, Ohio, and Kate Elberfeld Blosser of Gallipolis; sister, Anita Vandale Tuason of Wentchee, Wash., three grandchildren, special friends Drew and Janeen Easton; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stephan Renner Elberfield.
Service was Wednesday at Willis Funeral Home, Gallipolis, with Pastor Scott Baker officiating. Burial was in Beech Grove Cemetery in Pomeroy, Ohio.

Lillian M. Hylbert
Lillian Mae Lansden Hylbert, 101, of Vienna, died Sunday, March 22, 2009 at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.
She was born in Nebo, Ky., a daughter of the late James R. and Quincy B. Lansden. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Parkersburg, and a former member of the Gilboa and Reedy Baptist churches.
She is survived by three daughters, Sue Alexander of Spencer, Faye Matics of Reedy and Patty Hylbert of Vienna; one son, Dan Hylbert of Parkersburg; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two nieces.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Hylbert; brothers, Herbert and Ernest Lansden; and sons, Robert Dean and James Andrew Hylbert.
Service was Wednesday at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, with Pastor Kurt Busiek of Emmanuel Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.

Nathaniel Lee Jones
Nathaniel Lee Jones, 2, of Clearfield, Ky., died Monday, March 30, 2009 at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Ky.
He was born in Charleston, a son of Tiea Renee Jones of Clearfield and Donald Eugene May of Newton. He loved his horses, cows, cats, dogs, fire trucks, four-wheeler, trucks and cars.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Taylor May of Newton; maternal grandparents, James Edward Jones II of Point Pleasant; and Donna Jean Jones of Gandeeville; paternal grandparents, Eugene and Patty May of Spencer; and Jannetta A. “Sue” May of Left Hand; maternal great-grandparents, Amy Deloris Jones of Point Pleasant and Coy and Ruth Nicholas of Left Hand; paternal great-grandparent Elva May of Spencer; his mother’s companion, Brian Gallagher, and his children, Colby and Brianna Gallagher of Clearfield; and special friends, Hanna Paige Batten, Brody Layne Batten, and Chyanne Mynhier.
He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandfather, James “Eddie” Jones; and paternal great-grandparents, Ronel May, and Herby and Emma Gray.
Service was Friday at Wilcoxen Funeral Home with Pastor James Ellis officiating. Burial was in the Snodgrass Cemetery, Left Hand.
Mary Francis Kelley
Mary Francis Kelley, 79, of Leroy, died Wednesday, April 1, at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston.
She was born in Charleston, a daughter of the late Wesley and Ivy Myrtle Parsons Webb. She was a LPN in the healthcare field for many years, and a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Karl Kelley of Charleston and Michael Kelley of Winter Garden, Fla.; two daughters, Laura Matics of Spencer and Leah Anne Kelley of Charleston; sister, Jewell Lyons of Charleston; five grandchildren; and special friend, Richard Smith.
Service was Sunday at Vail Funeral Home, Ripley, with Rev. Bob Keen officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Irvin Lewis O’Dell
Irvin Lewis O’Dell, 76, of Amma, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at his home.
He was born at Orgas, a son of the late Isaac Reese O’Dell and Freda M. Abshire O’Dell Brown. He was a retired side boom operator. He was a member of the IUOE, Local 132, Charleston. He was a Christian and attended Johnson Creek Baptist Church, Looneyville. He was also a farmer, cattleman and Army veteran of the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife, Shelvia Jean O’Dell of Amma; two sons, Irvin Dwayne and Vernon Dale O’Dell, both of Amma; two sisters, Dolly McGlothlin of Navarre, Ohio, and Carol Easton of Yuma, Ariz.; three brothers, David O’Dell of Hamlet, Ind., Donald O’Dell of Michigan City, Ind., and John O’Dell of Amma; and three granddaughters; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Rebecca Lynn O’Dell in 1986; and three sisters, Frances Bowers, Katherine House and Sue Jury.
Service was Friday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, with Rev. Matt Baldwin and Rev. Anthony Ferrebee officiating. Burial was in the Clover Cemetery.
Jackie G. Phillips
Jackie G. Phillips, 69, of Spencer, died Thursday, April 2, at Roane General Hospital.
He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Andy and Olga B. “Bonnie” Knopp Phillips. He was a union carpenter and a member of the Ohio Carpenter’s Union.
He is survived by three daughters, Denise Seabolt of Ripley and Daneen Cenname and Beth Rhodes, both of Spencer; a son, David Phillips of Reedy; 11 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Elmogene Miller, Patricia Kee, Rhonda Knopp and Mary A. Carpenter; and a brother, James R. Phillips.
Service was Sunday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Jones officiating and Bill Wallton delivering the eulogy. Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Spencer.
Walter H. Ryan
Walter H. Ryan, 73, of Morgantown, died Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at his home.
He was born in Charleston, a son of the late Dr. Ralph W. and Mary K. Ryan. He was a graduate of Ann Arbor Senior High School, Michigan. He had a bachelor’s degree in history and business. He attended Fairmont State College, the University of Michigan and the University of New Hampshire. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He was an independent businessman in Morgantown.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Dr. Patricia P. Ryan; an aunt, Dorothy King Jones of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and several cousins.
Service was Monday, March 23 at the West Virginia National Cemetery in Pruntytown with Dr. Charles Shields and Mrs. Jean Brick officiating. Military honors were provided by the Taylor County Color Guard Unit and the WVANG Military Funeral Honors, Camp Dawson, Kingwood.

Shirley Marshall Sims
Shirley Marshall Sims, 84, of Arlington, Texas, formerly of Reedy, died Saturday, April 4, in Arlington.
She was born in Fort Atkinson, Wis., a daughter of the late William Alberto and Ida Preising Marshall Jr. She was brought to West Virginia when she was an infant and her father was hired to work on building paved roads. She grew up in Reedy and took with her volumes of history of the town of Reedy and the families that lived here. She was a 1942 Spencer High School graduate and later, after World War II, graduated from Hammel Actual Business College in Akron, Ohio. She was a riveter during the war, working in Akron on Navy Corsairs and bombers, and worked on landing gear and other parts of planes for the war effort. She was retired from Westfield Insurance Company in Akron after 28 years of service and then returned to West Virginia to live out her retirement years. She later relocated to Arlington to be near her daughter and grandson and lived there for the past two years.
She is survived by a daughter, Beverly Strausser of Arlington; sister, Virginia Massey of Waxhaw, N.C.; her grandson, Kelly J. Strausser of Mansfield, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
Service will be Friday at noon at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Mike King officiating. Burial will be in the Two Run Cemetery, near Palestine.
