Buddy Lee Carpenter
--Buddy Lee Carpenter, 67, of Spencer died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007 at Roane General Hospital after a year-long struggle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born in Spencer, a son of the late Bertha Sarah Jane Carpenter. He was a former member and deacon of Spencer Baptist Temple and a member of Roane County Gun Club. He was a retired millwright from Pechiney Rolled Products, Ravenswood. He was a member of United Steelworkers of America Local No. 5668. He was a former member of Blue Grass Riding Club and was previously employed by Monarch Rubber Co. and Ravens Metal.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley McKown Carpenter; one son, Marvin Lee Carpenter of Spencer; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Moles of Chloe; four sisters, Regina Maddox of Waycross, Ga., Ethel Roop of Ravenna, Ohio, Carol Mitchell and Roberta Fox, both of Parkersburg; cousins who were raised as siblings, Larry Carpenter, Mava McCumbers, both of Spencer and Lavon Anderson of Belvidere, Ill.; and two granddaughters.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by an uncle who raised him as a son, William H. Carpenter; one brother, Michael Carpenter; and one cousin raised as a brother, Billy Carpenter.
Service was Tuesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Hayward Lough and Bill Walton officiating. Per his request, the body was cremated.

Leo Wendal Johnson
--Leo Wendal Johnson, 81, of Ripley died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, following an extended illness.
He was born at Waverly, a son of the late Hubert and Yula Johnson Eagle. He was a World War II veteran and served in the Navy aboard the USS Houston. He was retired from Freeman Branch Mining-Geupel Construction Company. He was a member of the Operating Engineers, a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of Mt. Zion Church.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rachel Miller Johnson; two sons, Randall Johnson of Ripley and Wendal Johnson of Summersville; one daughter, Angela Ferguson of Danville; two brothers, Gary Eagle of Ripley and Wayne Eagle of Liverpool; and six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Cheryl Lynn Johnson.
Service was Tuesday at Parsons-Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, with Richard Rhodes officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Mava L. McCumbers
--Mava L. McCumbers, 61, of Spencer died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.
She was born in Spencer, a daughter of the late William H. and Thelma L. Starcher Carpenter. She was an employee of the former Kellwood Corp., Spencer. She was a member of Spencer Tabernacle.
She is survived by her husband, Dare V. McCumbers; one daughter, Shannon Dee Stockner of Spencer; one brother, Larry Carpenter of Spencer; one sister, Lavon Anderson of Belvidere, Ill.; and two grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Bud and Billy Carpenter.
Service was Saturday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Loren Price officiating. Burial was in Gibson Cemetery, Arnoldsburg.
Maurice Romine
--Maurice Romine, 78, of South Charleston died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007.
He was born in Roane County, a son of E.E. and Laura Romine. His family belonged to Mt. Union Methodist Church. He graduated from Morris Harvey College. He and his wife were teachers in Baltimore County, Md. and attended Dundalk Church of God where he was a member of the ushering staff. Upon returning to Spencer, he taught at Spencer and Linden Elementary schools. After moving to Kanawha County, he graduated from WVU and taught over 30 years at Alum Creek Elementary School. He was a member of Fifth Avenue Church of God, South Charleston, where he and his wife worked with the 3-year-olds in the 1970s and 1980s and helped with Bible school programs. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and recipient of the Purple Heart. He was past commander of the DAV Chapter No. 28 and the Purple Heart Chapter in Charleston. He also belonged to Moriah Lodge No. 58 in Spencer and Order of the Eastern Star No. 131 in South Charleston.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gladys Romine; two daughters, Janie and Joanna of Prestonburg, Ky.; special daughter, Kristina Hannan; two sisters, Marceline Hughes and Evelyn Park; and three grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Reynolds.
Service was Saturday at Fifth Avenue Church of God with Jim Burgess officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.
Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston, was in charge of arrangements.

Bonnie Leu Wright
--Bonnie Leu Wright, 52, of Spencer died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007 at her home.
She was born in Spencer, a daughter of the late Edward Lee and Betty Jo Greathouse Holland. She was a homemaker and collected angels. She was a member of Otto Advent Christian Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Melody Carson of Parkersburg; two special cousins, Patricia Hudkins of Walton and Jessica Hudkins-Johns of Left Hand; and one grandson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy H. Wright; and two sisters, Patricia and Linda Holland.
Memorial service is 6:30 p.m. Friday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Eldon Rhodes officiating. Burial was in Clover Cemetery.
