Florence Dalton

Florence Dalton, 98, of Vienna, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston, after a short illness.
She was born in Roane County, a daughter of the late Aaron and Almon Graham Tawney. She worked at the former Spencer State Hospital, and along with her late husband, was in business in the vicinity of their home in Vienna. She was a longtime member of Vienna Baptist Church and the Grand Chapter of Eastern Star.
She is survived by sisters, Mamie Haines of Newton and Anne Despasito of Albuquerque, N.M.; brothers, Clement Tawney of Tariff, Jarrett “Buzz” Tawney of Spencer and Dan Tawney of Newton; two step-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special neighbor and friend, Gary Sall of Vienna.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack S. Dalton; one stepson; four brothers; and one sister.
Service was Saturday, March 7 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Vienna, with Rev. Bill Brown officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.



Durward K. Knopp

Durward K. “Butch” Knopp, 68, of Sandyville, died Sunday, March 22, 2009 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington.
He was born in Bay City, Mich., a son of the late Durward Kent and Elizabeth Ellen Harpold Knopp. He was the owner and operator of Knopp’s Power Equipment, Spencer, for many years. He attended Shatto Tabernacle, near Ripley.
He is survived by his wife, Joy Marie Knopp of Sandyville; sons, Kenneth Lee Knopp Rhodes of Leon and Jerry Kent Knopp of Newton, N.C.; stepson, Gordon Rhodes of Statts Mills; daughters, Kendal Stearns of Reedy and Tammy Longfellow of Newton; brother, Howard Knopp of Leon; sister, Connie Starcher of Spencer; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Service was Wednesday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, with Rev. Daniel R. “Danny” Whited officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Gay.


Orlie M. Rhodes

Orlie M. Rhodes, 100, of Leroy, died Monday, March 23, 2009 at Jackson General Hospital, Ripley.
She was born at Red Knob, a daughter of the late Ed and Canna Cox.
She is survived by her children, Garnet Kee of Dunbar, Robert Rhodes of Gandeeville, Lula DeLay of Parkersburg, Arnold and Paulette Rhodes of Leroy, Ronald Rhodes of Parsons, Kan., Garland Rhodes and Roger Rhodes, both of Niles, Mich.; 23 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Rhodes; children, Frances Norman, Clarsie Sawyer, Kathryn Rhodes, Darrell Rhodes and Jarrell Rhodes.
Service will be Friday at 1 p.m. at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Oris Harper officiating. Burial will be in the Hunt Cemetery, Vicars.


Bernard H. Stonestreet

Bernard H. Stonestreet, 89, of Spencer, died Friday, March 20, 2009 at Miletree Center.
He was born at Triplett, Braxton County, a son of the late Grover Butler and Iva Maude Hawkins Stonestreet.
He is survived by his daughter, Linda Knight Jernigan of Spencer; sons, Larry V. Stonestreet of Spencer and Bernard Leon Stonestreet of Melbourne, Fla.; brothers, Denzil Stonestreet of Cross Lanes and Vance Stonestreet of Spencer; sisters, Eunice Stonestreet of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Mary Louise Wine of Dunbar; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Nettie Stonestreet; second wife, Orpha Stonestreet; and brothers, Eugene, Clayton and Berkley Stonestreet.
Service was Monday at 11 a.m. at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, with Rev. Randall L. “Randy” Whited officiating. Burial was in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, Gassaway.


Rev. Leon B. Strickland

Rev. Leon B. Stickland, 80, of Spencer, died Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Roane General Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born in Roane County, a son of the Rev. Henry Bert and Rosa Moore Strickland. He was a minister for over 51 years, most recently at Epling Chapel Church, where he served as pastor for many years. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Linden Lodge 38 AF&AM, a member of Scottish Rites, Charleston, and a member of the International Order of the Oddfellows. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by one daughter, Vickie Lynn Strickland of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one son, David Allen Strickland of Charleston; and one granddaughter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Kathryn Schreckengost Strickland.
Service was Sunday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Danny Whited officiating. Burial was in Clover Cemetery with military graveside rites.

Freddy Ray Webb

Freddy Ray Webb, 69, of Spencer, died Wednesday, March 18, 2009 in Spencer.
He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Rome and Alice Casto Webb. He formerly worked for the city of Spencer, West Virginia Department of Highways and Monarch Rubber Company.
He is survived by three sons, Fred Webb Jr., Burley Webb and Chris Webb, all of Spencer; two sisters, JoAnn Whiting of Spencer and Nancy Rexroad of Gassaway; one brother, Henry Webb of Spencer; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
The body was cremated. There was no service or visitation. Taylor Vandale-Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Richard C. Whytsell

Richard C. Whytsell, 76, of Arnoldsburg, died Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at Eldercare of Ripley.
He was born at Rocksdale, a son of the late Fred Whytsell Sr. and Vena Riggs Whytsell. He was retired from Hardwood Manufacturing in West Salem, Ohio, and attended Leatherbark Church near Arnoldsburg.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marie Albanese Whytsell; one son, Jeffrey Whytsell of West Salem; three sisters, Vera Madeline Wagoner, Lola Moss and Barbara Church, all of Arnoldsburg; five brothers, Donald, Fred “Joe” Jr., Frank and Ben Whytsell, all of Arnoldsburg, and George Whytsell of Lewisville, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ernest Ray Whytsell; and three sisters, Imogene and Laverne Whytsell and Juanita Batten.
Service was Saturday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Matheny officiating. Burial was in Eventide Cemetery.

Lois Woodyard

Lois Woodyard, 85, of Marietta, Ohio, formerly of Wheeling and Spencer, died Sunday, March 22, 2009 at Marietta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born in Spencer, a daughter of the late Henry C. and Ida Moore Woodyard. She attended Roane County schools and graduated from Chevy Chase Junior College in Washington, D.C., and West Virginia University. She was employed as the advertising manager for Stone & Thomas Department stores in Charleston and Wheeling. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Women’s Golf Associating at Oglebay Park in Wheeling, and the Stone Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by a sister, Jane W., of Marietta; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Emma W. Laughlin, formerly of Fairmont and Sarasota, Fla.
A private family graveside service was Tuesday at Eventide Cemetery with Rev. Mike King officiating Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
