Frankie E. Criss

--Frankie E. Criss, 85, of Spencer died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006 at Roane General Hospital.
She was born in Spencer, a
daughter of the late Harry Edward and Clara Esta Ball Greathouse. During World War II, she worked as a “Rosie the Riveter” in plants in Wheeling, W.Va. and Akron, Ohio. She was a truck driver in Westoverfield, Mass. area and a former employee of Roane General Hospital. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 21 and Roane General Hospital Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Walter A. Criss of Spencer; one son, Norman A. Criss of Louisville, Ky.; one daughter, Nora A. Cox of Barberton, Ohio; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Johnny Greathouse and O. Jimmy Greathouse; and three sisters, Virginia Hively, Helen Cox and Elizabeth Greathouse.
Service was Saturday at First Baptist Church of Spencer with Rev. Leon B. Strickland officiating. Burial was in Eventide Cemetery.
John H. Taylor Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Randy W. Lockhart

--Randy W. Lockhart, 43, of Palestine died Friday, Dec. 22, 2006 as a result of an auto accident.
He was born in Wood County, a son of Melvin and Pauline Nutter Lockhart of Palestine. He had been in sheet metal since he was 18 and was an owner of Singer Sheet Metal of Parkersburg. He received his American Farmers Degree. He most recently attended Elizabeth United Methodist Church and was a member of Palestine United Methodist Church. He enjoyed farming and hunting.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Anita Lemon Lockhart, formerly of Spencer; one son, Mitchell W. Lockhart of Virginia Beach, Va.; stepdaughters, Nicole R. Osborne of Huntington and Kayla R. Osborne, a student at West Virginia University; and one sister, Lou Ann Thorn of Palestine.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Lee Lockhart; paternal grandparents, Ivan and Ica Lockhart; and maternal grandparents, George and Gertie Nutter.
Service was Wednesday at Matheny Pomroy Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with Rev. Harold Francis and Rev. Jim Bruce officiating. Burial was in Shiloh Cemetery, Palestine.

Dessie M. Manno

--Dessie M. Manno, 66, of Brunswick, Ohio, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006 in Parma.
She was born in Roane County and was a homemaker.
She is survived by two sons, Gerald Kilgore of Ravenna, Ohio, and Herald Kilgore of Brunswick; two daughters, Denise Kilgore of Akron, Ohio, and Cathy Manno of Orlando, Fla.; one sister, Betty Whited of Reedy; former spouse, Gerald Kilgore; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Manno, and parents, Orland and Isabelle Greathouse.
Service in West Virginia will be later. Waite & Son Funeral Homes, Brunswick Chapel handled local arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Federation for the Blind.

Garold Randell Nichols

--Garold Randell “Gary” Nichols, 49, of Left Hand died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006 after a long battle with cancer.
He was born at Left Hand, a son
of Mary Rosalea Potts Nichols of Newton and the late Doy William Nichols. He was a skidder and dozer operator, landscaper and timber cutter. He was a welder for Little Hawk Welding Company, Amma. He was a Baptist.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Summers Nichols of Left Hand; one son, Doy Thomas Nichols of Ripley; two stepsons, William and Lane Steele, both of Walton; five stepdaughters, Terri Lynn Lupardus of Gandeeville, Cindy Eubank, Iris Gibler, both of Illinois, Laura Walls of Clio and Susan Evans of South Charleston; one brother, Donnie William Nichols of Newton; and 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Service was Saturday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Kenneth E. Truman officiating. Burial was in Nichols Family Cemetery, Newton.

William Brady Reed Jr.

--William Brady Reed Jr., 87, of Spencer died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006 at Roane General Hospital.
He was a son of the late Mr.
and Mrs. W.B. Reed Sr. and was educated in Spencer Schools before entering VMI and completing his chemistry degree at UNC. He was employed at E.I. DuPont in Indiana until he was drafted during World War II to work on the Manhattan project. In 1948 he returned to Spencer to work in his father’s O.J. Morrison’s department store. He was active in civic activities and served as president of the Lions Club and Black Walnut Festival. He headed Cub Scouts. He was a director of Traders Bank and the Morrison stores in Charleston, Clarksburg, Morgantown, Point Pleasant and Spencer. He enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting and growing irises and roses. He played the flute in the community band. He was loyal to United Methodist Church where he was a board member.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Fanny Cowan Reed from Tamassee, S.C.; one son, W. Brady Reed III of Seattle; two sisters, Mesdames Glendine Meadows of Southern Pines, N.C., and Betty Acree of Goldsboro, N.C.; one brother, Robert Reed of Short Hill, N.C.; and two grandsons.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Rita Vaughn of Pinehurst, N.C.
Service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Memorial United Methodist Church, Spencer, with Rev. Joe Heilman officiating. Visitation will precede the service at 2:30 p.m.
Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Alzheimers Foundation, 1111 Lee St., South Charleston WV 25303.

Saphrona E. Roush

--Saphrona E. Roush, 81, of Spencer died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006 at Miletree Center.
She was born at Newton, a daughter of the late Michael James and Anna Jane Moore Drake. She was a retired nurse’s aid at Spencer Hospital and the Guthrie Center. She was a member of Reamer Gospel Tabernacle, Clendenin.
She is survived by one son, Lester Smith of Marietta, Ohio; four daughters, Kathleen Wilson of Hurricane, Sallie Brown of Charleston, Norma Ferrell of Spencer and Judy Ferrell of Looneyville; two sisters, Maggie Drake of Newton and Gladys Chapman of Spencer; and seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Service was Friday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Leon B. Strickland officiating. Burial was in Keen Cemetery, Newton.
