Gregory Brent Atkinson

--Gregory Brent Atkinson, 49, of Parkersburg died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007 at The Arbors, Marietta, Ohio, after battling lung cancer.
He was born in Chillicothe, Ohio, a son of Dr. Bill M. Atkinson of Little Hocking, Ohio, and the late Phyllis Fouty Atkinson.
In addition to his father, he is survived by uncles and aunts, Charles and Mildred Atkinson and Dan and Phyllis Harlan, both of Ripley; and many cousins.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Alan Atkinson; one sister, Billie Jo Atkinson; grandparents, Oma and Hazel Roberts Atkinson and William and Ruth Matics Fouty; and uncles, Lloyd Darrell Atkinson and William F. King, all formerly of Middle Fork of Reedy.
There were no services. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery near Peniel on Tuesday.
Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lawson J. Boatwright

--Lawson Junior Boatwright, 61, of Spencer died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007 at Roane General Hospital after a short illness.
He was born in Barberton, Ohio, a son of the late Lawson and Hazel Webb Boatwright. He was a heavy equipment operator for 25 years and worked for Cioffy Construction Inc. for 23 years. He was a member of Ohio Engineers Local No. 18 of Akron, Ohio, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
He is survived by his wife, Yolette Vasquez Boatwright; one daughter, Yvette Conrad of Canal Fulton, Ohio; one son, Michael Boatwright of Akron; one sister, Virginia Miller of North Carolina; two brothers, Charlie Boatwright of Wadsworth, Ohio, and Daniel Boatwright of Norton, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
Service was Wednesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Lorren Price officiating. Burial was in Lakewood Cemetery, Akron.

Helen M. Burdette

--Helen M. Hedges Steele Burdette, 73, of Spencer died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007 at Cedar Ridge Nursing Center, Pocatalico.
She was born in Roane County, a daughter of the late Willie Hedges and Eska Hildreth Hedges Artist. She did secretarial work, most recently with the Roane County Chamber of Commerce.
She is survived by one daughter, Debbie Knight of Culloden; three sisters, Esther Ann Ward and Willadean Webb, both of Spencer, and Irene Linger of Dexter City, Ohio; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Rick Steele.
Service is 11 a.m. Friday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Leon Strickland officiating. Visiting hours are 6-8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Hodam Cemetery near Spencer.
In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to Alzheimer’s Association, 1111 East Lee Street, Charleston WV 25301.

Mary Cooper

--Mary Louise Farley Cooper, 84, of Point Pleasant died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007 at Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born at Prince, a daughter of the late Jasper C. and Norma Dove Farley. She was employed as a business teacher at Point Pleasant High School, where she had been a sponsor of the Y-Teens Club, until her retirement in 1982. She was also the first business vocational teacher in Mason County. She was a graduate of West Virginia University. She resided in Spencer for 17 years and was past president of the Spencer Junior Woman’s Club. She also held offices in the West Virginia University Alumni Association, Hill and Hollow Garden Club and was a member of American Association of University Women, a Girl Scout leader and sponsor of the Tri-Hi-Y Club while teaching at Spencer High School.
She is a former member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Spencer and was a standing member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Point Pleasant, National Education Association, West Virginia Education Association, Mason County Retired Teachers Association, American University Association of Women and Mason County Camp Conley Homemakers. Growing roses was her hobby and she loved to test roses for Jackson Perkins, having named one of their roses.
She is survived by her husband, John Cooper; one son, Rev. John Farley Cooper-Martin of Rockville, Md.; one daughter, Mary Jane Cole of Pinch; and six grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Summers of Beckley; and one brother, Palmer Farley of Beckley.
Service was Monday morning at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard DeQuasie officiating. Graveside service was Monday afternoon in Auburn Baptist Church Cemetery near Auburn.
Wilcoxen Funeral Home, Point Pleasant, was in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 615 Viand St., Point Pleasant or the Autism Research Institute, 4182 Adams Ave., San Diego CA 92116.

Amilie Harris Marks

--Amilie Harris Marks, 71, of Wooster, Ohio, formerly of Calhoun County, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007 at Smithville Western Nursing Home after an extended illness.
She was a daughter of the late Hatzel and Lelah Leach. She attended Full Gospel Church in Canal Fulton, Ohio, for over 20 years.
She is survived by seven children, Kathleen Harris, Phyllis Vannoy, both of Mt. Zion, Audrey Smith of Grantsville, Roger Harris, Jimmie Harris, both of Wooster, Janet Morris of Smithville and Kenny Harris of Wooster, who was a grandson raised as a son; her second husband, Virgil “Red” Marks; three stepchildren, Michael Green of North Carolina, Bonnie Mucklow of Florida and Patty Marshall of Alabama; one sister, Leah Garrett of Millstone; and 18 grandchildren, 15 step-grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband of 42 years, George Lee Harris, and one granddaughter.
Service was Tuesday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg with Rev. Cleston Garrett officiating. Burial was in Sycamore Baptist Church Cemetery, Millstone.

June Miller

--June Miller, 75, of Newton died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007 at her home.
She was born at Oka, a daughter of the late
Ernest and Martha West Brannon. She was a retired beautician and was a member of Newton Baptist Church for 45 years.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Okey Miller; two daughters, Carrolyn O’Neal of Oak Harbor, Ohio, and Sandra Tallman of Newton; one son, Jarrell Miller of Newton; two sisters, Orpha Cottrell of Spencer and Ernestine Keaton of Orma; and seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Howard Brannon; and two sisters, Mary Ann Rouse and Letha Simons.
Service was Tuesday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Ronald W. Fisher officiating. Burial was in Clover Cemetery.

Ruth A. Poling

--Ruth A. Poling, 64, of Spencer died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007 at home after an extended illness.
She was born in Roane County, a daughter of Icy M. White Webb of Spencer and the late Paul Eugene Webb. She worked at Kellwood Co. for many years and was manager of Go-Mart in Spencer for several years.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by one daughter, Kim Bagby of Apple Creek, Ohio; two sons, Guy Poling of Fredericksburg, Ohio, and Tony Poling of Apple Creek; one sister, Norma Freeland of Spencer; two brothers, Eddie Webb of Trinity, N.C., and Roger Webb of Akron, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Ellen Hunsche; and one brother, Larry Webb.
Service was Wednesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Danny Whited officiating. Per her request, the body was cremated.
