Toye Mae Phillips Abbott
--Toye Mae Phillips Abbott, 90, of Clendenin died Monday, Nov. 6 at home after a short illness.
She was a daughter of the late Joseph and Amanda Virginia Cadle Phillips. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and the Clendenin Senior Citizens. She enjoyed quilting and gardening.
She is survived by one brother, Mayford Phillips of Rockport; and two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Lee Abbott in 1982; one son, Joe Early Abbott; six brothers, Dellie, Charlie, Dexter, Orville, Donald and Coy Phillips; and two sisters, Virgie Harper and Ollie Doran.
Service was Friday, Nov. 10 at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, with Rev. Hubert Woods officiating. Burial was in Abbott Fairview Cemetery.
Mary E. Callaway
--Mary E. Callaway, 83, of Tyler, Texas, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006 at Trinity Mother Frances Health Systems, Tyler.
She was born at
Newton, a daughter of the late O.D. and Eska Allen Jarvis. She is a retired bookkeeper from William George Produce and a member of Friendly Baptist Church, Tyler.
She is survived by one son, Walter David Callaway Jr. of Granbury, Texas; four sisters, Dona Drake of Sandyville, Floretta Nester of Newton, Luberta “Tiny” Neil of Summersville and Naomi Myers of Richmond, Va.; three brothers, Noble Jarvis of Wadsworth, Ohio, Oliver Jarvis of Sandyville and Larry Jarvis of Winter Haven, Fla.; and three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Callaway Sr.; and two sisters, Frankie Eddy and Lucy Helmic.
Service was Saturday, Nov. 4 at Bailey & Foster Funeral Home, Palestine, Texas, with Rev. Tim McKeown officiating. Burial was in Broyles Chapel Cemetery.
Eugene Harold Hively
--Eugene Harold “Buster” Hively, 79, of Walton died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006 at Heartland of Charleston after an extended illness.
He was born near Walton, a son of the late Roy Samuel and Ruby Moore Hively. He was a farmer and life-long resident of Roane County.
He is survived by two nieces, Berneice Moore of Walton and Bernaetta Shamblin of Normantown; and one nephew, Richard C. Moore of Walton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Bernadine Hively and Maxine Moore Taylor.
Service was Sunday at John H. Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Shafer officiating. Burial was in Shafer Cemetery, Walton.
Hazel Marie Jett
--Hazel Marie Jett, 64, of Wooster, Ohio, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006 at Country Point Nursing Facility, Wooster.
She was born in Zanesville, Ohio, a daughter of the late Paul and Stella Wayne Jett.
She is survived by six children, Kenneth Jett of Elizabeth, Veronica Nagy of Wooster, Curtis Marks of Creston, Gwinna Marks of Parkersburg, Carlena Rock of Salem, Ohio, and Robert Marks of Chloe; one half-sister, Vonda Parsons of Anna, Ill.; one half-brother of Newark, Ohio; and 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Service was Sunday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg with Rev. Louis Villers officiating. Burial was in Minnora Cemetery.
Kenneth M. Lambert
--Kenneth Matthew Lambert, 86, of Newton died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006 at CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston after an extended illness.
He was born in Jane Lew, a son of the late Marion E. and Lena Matthews Lambert. He was a retired 25-year employee of Betsy Ross Foods and was a member of Teamsters Union Local No. 348 Mogadore, Ohio. He was a decorated Army veteran of World War II. He was awarded five medals, including the Silver Star. He served under the command of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower during the Battle of the Bulge. He also fought in other battles at Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Central Europe and the Ardennes. He was a member and Sunday school superintendent at Uler Memorial Church.
He is survived by his wife, June A. Drake Lambert of Newton; one son, David Lambert of Akron, Ohio; and one stepson, Jeffrey Hall of Copley, Ohio.
Graveside service was Saturday at Zion Hills Cemetery, Elana, with Pastor Ed Young officiating.
John H. Taylor Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Ervin Gay McCune
--Ervin Gay McCune, 73, of Spencer died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006 at Roane General Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Clayton and Ethel Mae Looney McCune. He was a retired oil and gas driller and was a Baptist.
He is survived by two sons, Alfred and Larry McCune, both of Spencer; two daughters, Ruth Ann Nichols of Left Hand and Anna Marie Reynolds of Spencer; one sister, Jean Crowder of Hartville, Ohio; one brother, William C. “John” McCune of Spencer; and 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ida Jean McCune; second wife, Shirley McCune; four sons, Ronnie and Gary McCune and John and Herbert Wilson; and one brother, Richard McCune.
Service was Tuesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Rick Perrine officiating. Burial was in Swank Cemetery near Spencer.
Edsel “Slick” Simmons
--Edsel “Slick” Simmons, 75, of Spencer died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006 at home.
He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Laco and Erma Dail Montgomery Simmons. He was a 1950 Spencer High School graduate and was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in the Korean Conflict from 1952-56. He was self-employed until his retirement. After his retirement, he enjoyed spending time on the farm.
He is survived by one son, Steven Kent Simmons; two brothers, his twin, Edwin Simmons of Newton, Ga., and Robert S. Simmons of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; one sister, Margaret Ruth Simmons Carper of Woodleaf, N.C.; two grandsons; and two honorary grandsons.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Iris Ruth Pursley Simmons in 2002; two sisters, Mildred Justine Smith and Betty Jane Conley; and one brother, William H. Simmons.
Service was Wednesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home with Rev. Mike King officiating. Burial was in Spencer Memorial Cemetery.
Marvin Eugene Suttle
--Marvin Eugene “Gene” Suttle, 87, of Waverly, Va., died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006.
He was born in Roane County, a son of the late
Dennis Suttle and Inez Boatwright Suttle. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He worked as a coal miner, carpenter and was a supervisor for United Fuel Co. He also worked as a pipefitter for Norshipco, Norfolk, Va.
He is survived by two daughters, Loretta Jean McDaniels of Waverly and Karen Elaine Burke of Ivor, Va.; his former wife, Anna Barbara Gillikin of Portsmouth, Va.; one grandson; and one honorary grandson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, James Larry Suttle; one sister, Minnie LeMaster; two brothers, Denvil Dick Suttle and Frank Suttle; one half-brother, Daniel McCroskey; and one grandson.
Service will be later. Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, Va., is in charge of arrangements.
