Roane County’s Alex Mace meets opposition during a freshman game Friday at Clay.

- Hickman title highlights Roane’s LKC showing

Brad Hickman’s individual title was the highlight Saturday as a depleted Roane County team finished fourth in the LKC wrestling tournament at Mt. Zion.

Hickman, a freshman, won his championship at 112 pounds by pinning Nick Stevens of Calhoun County at the 3:13 mark of their finals match.

That was the lone title for the Raiders, who wrestled without several key starters. Unbeaten 103-pounder Josh Fisher was ill, 119-pounder Joey Maldonado did not make weight, 125-pounder Justin Fisher was still recovering from an ankle injury and 130-pounder Cody Clarkson was out after suffering an injury while playing basketball during lunch on Friday.

“The front half of our lineup is as good as you’ll find and the heavier kids are improving,” RCHS coach Wayne Jarvis said. “It just seems like something is always happening to keep us from being 100 percent.”

Roane’s other placers included Sky Parrish (4th at 135), Eric Jarvis (3rd at 140), Tyler Starcher (4th at 171), Ernie Carper (4th at 189), Chris James (4th at 215) and Caleb Greathouse (3rd at 285).

Raiders Cody Carper at 145 and Tyler Dolan at 152 each won one match.

Host Calhoun won the 10-team tournament in a tight race with runner-up Williamstown. Jarvis thinks his team could have beaten the Red Devils with a full lineup, something he expects to have when the two teams meet again in the regional tournament in two weeks.

“The good news is that all the injuries and illnesses are temporary,” Jarvis said. “Our goals have not changed. We intend to be challenging for the Region IV title next time we go back to Calhoun.”

Roane will host the annual Raider Cup this Saturday beginning at noon. The schedule for the round robin dual tournament is as follows:

Round 1 (12:00) – Roane vs. Wahama, Keyser vs. Robert C. Byrd, Parkersburg vs. Fairmont Senior

Round 2 (1:00) – Roane vs. PHS, Wahama vs. Keyser, RCB vs. Fairmont

Round 3 (2:00) – Roane vs. Fairmont, Keyser vs. PHS, RCB vs. Wahama

Round 4 (3:45) – Roane vs. RCB, Fairmont vs, Keyser, Wahama vs. PHS
