Josh Fisher of Roane County racked up another title Saturday during the annual Braxton County Invitational tournament in Gassaway.
Fisher, a freshman, ran his record to a perfect 18-0 for the season when he pinned Markus Griffin of Grafton in the finals at 103 pounds.
Led by Fisher, the Raiders managed to finish seventh in the tournament, which attracted entries from 25 schools. Point Pleasant came out on top with 239 points and Calhoun County was second with 194.5. Roane’s total was 121.5.
Joey Maldonado of the Raiders earned a runner-up finish at 119. He lost a 5-3 overtime match to Phillip Allen of Point Pleasant in the finals. Maldonado (17-3) had beaten Allen a week earlier in the Jackson Invitational championship match.
Roane’s Brad Hickman (18-4) placed third at 112 after recording a pin over Calhoun’s Nick Stevens in the consolation finals.
Cody Clarkson and Eric Jarvis each finished fourth for the Raiders. Clarkson (15-5) dropped an 8-3 match to Sonny Harrah of Shady Spring in the consolation final at 130 and Jarvis (18-4) was pinned by Danny Palmateer of St. Marys in the 140 consolation final.
Coach Wayne Jarvis’ team will have seven seeded wrestlers for the WSAZ Invitational this Friday and Saturday in Huntington. Fisher has a top seed at 103 as does his brother Justin at 125. Justin Fisher, 21-0 on the season, missed the Braxton tournament due to illness.
The other RCHS seeds include: Hickman (6th at 112), Maldonado (2nd at 119), Clarkson (7th at 130), Sky Parrish (6th at 135) and Jarvis (5th at 140).
Roane’s lineup for the WSAZ event is also expected to include: Cody Carper (4-4 at 145), D.J. Kennedy (7-7 at 152), Ernie Carper (1-13 at 160), Tyler Starcher (7-11 at 171), Mikol Schoolcraft (7-12 at 189), Chris James (2-2 at 215) and Caleb Greathouse (8-11 at 285).
