Raiders 2-1 after opening week of hoops action

Derek Davis of the Raiders goes up for two during his team’s four-overtime victory over Point Pleasant on Monday.

DREW HARDMAN/SPENCER NEWSPAPERS
- It took a while for Roane County to warm up before the Raiders were able to take care of Calhoun County 41-29 in the season opener last Wednesday at Mt. Zion.

The Red Devils led 14-12 after a sluggish first half before the Raiders, playing their first game under new head coach Greg Alfred, took control. Roane had an 11-6 advantage in the third quarter to go up 23-20 and then took control with an 18-9 run in the fourth.

Josh Drake led the Raiders will 11 points despite hitting on only 1-of-11 free throws, part of his team’s 4-for-21 effort from the line.

Calhoun was nearly as bad from the charity stripe, hitting on only 5-of-16 attempts.

Matt Brohard added nine points for Roane and Derek Davis collected 10 rebounds.

Calhoun got a game-high 16 points from Josh Deweese.

Roane crushed Calhoun 67-18 in the junior varsity game behind 13 points from Rhett Atkinson, 12 from Jimmy Hensley and 11 from Josh Jones.

Roane County received a big early-season confidence boost Monday at home by outlasting Point Pleasant 62-60 in four overtimes.

“It’s just great confidence for these kids,” Raider head coach Greg Alfred said. “You can never give up, because you never know.”

The Raiders had every opportunity to give up against the Big Blacks (0-3), who had a chance to break a 38-all tie before missing the final shot of regulation.

Josh Drake was the Raider hero at the end of the first extra period when he connected on two free throws to deadlock the game at 42 and force another extra period.

Roane got another lift with eight seconds left in the second O.T. when Aaron Parsons canned a 3-pointer from the left side of the key to force another extra frame.

The third O.T. ended in another tie, and with the Raiders shorthanded. Two starters — Parsons and Trevor Cummings — had fouled out and another, Derek Davis, was on the bench with a back injury.

Colter Taylor, Steve Thomas and Matt Ash all played key roles for Roane as the Big Blacks were content to hold the ball in a futile attempt to draw the Raiders out of their zone defense.

The final two-point margin handed the Raiders their second straight win to start the season.

“It looked like we were down and out, but the kids kept stepping up,” Alfred said.

Drake and Matt Brohard paced Roane with 11 points each while Davis and Parsons added nine apiece.

Tyson Jones hit for 24 to lead Point and Tyler Deal added 14.

The Raiders ran their JV record to 2-0 by edging Point Pleasant 46-43 behind 10 points each from Colter Taylor and Shane Starcher.

Travis Cunningham tossed in 16 points for Herbert Hoover on Tuesday as the Huskies humbled Roane County 81-40 at Falling Rock.

Hoover (2-1) also got 12 points from Evan Shamblin and 11 apiece from Torin Samples and Neil Williams as they handed the Raiders their first loss of the season.

Roane (2-1) was led by a 10-point performance from Colter Taylor.

The Huskies, led by Shamblin’s four, connected on 10 3-pointers. The Raiders sank seven treys of their own, but made only six 2-point baskets.

Hoover also won the JV game, 56-51, to drop Roane to 2-1 on the season. Jimmy Hensley had 20 points to top the Raiders, who also got 11 from Colter Taylor and nine from Rhett Atkinson.
