Roane County outlasted Ritchie County Tuesday to earn a spot in the regional volleyball tournament.
The Lady Raiders (23-9-1) defeated the Rebels in five games to advance to the championship round of the sectional tournament today (Thursday) in Ravenswood. Roane will play the winner of an elimination game between Ritchie and Ravenswood. A win would give Roane the title, while a loss would force a second game.
The top two sectional teams qualify for the Class AA Region I tournament, which begins Saturday at 2 p.m. at Tyler Consolidated.
Ritchie defeated Ravenswood in the first sectional match. That led to a Ritchie-Roane meeting that was a rematch of a five-game victory by the Rebels in the LKC semifinals.
This time, top-seeded Roane dropped the first game 25-21 and evened the match with an identical score in game two. Roane took game three 25-22 before Ritchie came back to win game four by the same score. The Lady Raiders were a 15-8 winner in the deciding game.
Kate Williams’ 30 points were high for Roane, which also got 66 sets from Annie Hodge to go along with 74 spikes, 21 kills and six blocks from Ashli Knotts.
A balanced attack powered Roane County’s volleyball team past visiting Calhoun County in straight games Thursday.
The Lady Raiders won by scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-23 as they wrapped up the regular season with a 22-9-1 record.
Ashli Knotts led Roane with 45 spikes and 15 kills to go along with 54 sets. Morgan Cottrell was tops in points with 17 and blocks with five. Clarissa Pinson added 16 points while Annie Hodge had eight kills and 41 sets.
Roane’s junior varsity won the deciding third game 25-15 to close their season with a victory. Megan Haverty and Jessica Vannoy notched 13 points each for the Lady Raider reserves, who finished with a 9-3 record.
