SMS reached the 18-yard-line of the Lumberjacks with 37 seconds left in the game before the potential game-tying drive was stopped on downs.
Dylan Cottrell scored a pair of long-distance touchdowns for the Jackets, on a 90-yard kickoff return in the second quarter and a 60-yard run in the fourth.
Michael Bates got the Spencer scoring started with a 1-yard TD in the first quarter. Nathan Reynolds also tallied for the Jackets on a 35-yard burst in the second quarter.
SMS led 20-16 at the half, but could not overcome two TDs and two PATs by Richwood’s Chad Spencer in the third quarter.
Reynolds finished with 108 rushing yards and Cottrell added 107. The two also combined to make 25 tackles.
The Jackets, who finished 5-4 on the season, were the defending conference champions.
Cottrell, Reynolds, Bates and J.T. Kendall were named to the all-CWVAC team.
