Roane County standout Josh Fisher followed up the first loss of his high school career with an impressive win.
Fisher wrestled a couple of key matches for the Raiders as they went 3-6 in the WV Duals Friday and Saturday at Parkersburg South High.
On Friday, Fisher dropped the first match of his career, a 9-2 decision to Johnni DiJulius to Walsh Jesuit of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, at 125 pounds.
Fisher, a junior who entered the match with 108 consecutive wins, scored a reversal with 36 seconds left in the match to pull within 3-2 of DiJulius, third-ranked nationally among juniors. Fisher is rated 11th.
DiJulius got a takedown and a near fall at the edge of the mat in the final 18 seconds to stretch the final margin.
“Fisher was just trying to score and get back in control,” Raider head coach Wayne Jarvis said. “The match was stopped twice earlier because a of potentially dangerous situation with Fisher in control. We thought the second time he was getting ready to turn him.”
The coach said his two-time Class AA state champ handled the unusual situation well.
“He was not happy,” Jarvis said. “He was disappointed, but he didn’t say a lot about it. He did bounce right back, though.”
Fisher won his other eight matches in the event to run his season record to 23-1. One of those wins was a 4-2 decision over Kyle Bauer of Wheeling Park, top-ranked in Class AAA at 125. Fisher had an escape in both the first and second periods and a takedown in the second.
Another Raider, sophomore Dylan Cottrell, also won eight matches during the Duals while suffering his first loss of the season. Cottrell, 35-1 on the season at 119, dropped a 6-3 decision to Max Byrd of LaSalle, Ohio.
Sam Whiting, another sophomore, also went 8-1 for the Raiders at 130 and moved his season mark to 27-4.
“Sam took a shot that chipped his tooth and broke his nose,” Jarvis said. “He finished that match and won it, and then won the rest of them.”
Other records for the Raiders during the Duals, and for the season, include: Randy Lawson (2-7, 7-17 at 135), Luke Hottle (5-4, 19-16 at 140), Nathan Reynolds (2-7, 15-17 at 152), Tyler Dolan (3-6, 20-16 at 160), Clayton Jarvis (2-7, 14-19 at 171), Sam Lawson (5-4, 17-15 at 189), Steven Martin (5-4, 17-17 at 215) and Caleb Starcher (2-7, 7-21 at 285).
Roane’s three wins during the event came over Lewis County (46-36), LaSalle (40-30) and the WV All-Stars (54-27). Losses were to Caldwell, Ohio (42-19), Calhoun County (46-27), George Washington (40-34), Walsh Jesuit (63-13), Parkersburg South B (58-17) and Wheeling Park (53-18).
Parkersburg South won the title, with Walsh Jesuit as runner-up.
