Annual citywide cleanup next week

By JIM COOPER
Editor -
Spencer’s annual three-day citywide cleanup is set to begin next week.

Crews will pick up tree trimmings, brush, etc., on Thursday, April 24 while Friday, April 25 will be reserved for metal items including appliances.

Workers will begin each day at 5 a.m. in all sections of the city.

A general cleanup will take place on a single day — Saturday, April 26 — beginning at 5 a.m. for all neighborhoods. Residents planning to participate must put their unwanted items near the street the night before the actual cleanup date.

Bulk items to be picked up must be placed in boxes or bags. Items not in containers may not be picked up.

The cleanup is not for household garbage or building construction materials. Residents and property owners with no regular trash service will not be eligible. Workers will have the option of choosing what they collect.

Items not eligible for collection because of landfill regulations include shingles, tires, batteries, paint, oil, air conditioners and hazardous materials.

Those with a total of items that would not fit into a level pickup truck bed and those with questions may call the Spencer Municipal Building at 927-1640 for more information.

The annual Stash the Trash program sponsored by the Roane Solid Waste Authority for all county residents is scheduled for the Saturday, May 24 from 5-9 a.m. at the Bowman Street parking lot in Spencer.

The same restrictions that apply to the city cleanup will be used for Stash the Trash. Those who would like more information about the county cleanup may also call the Spencer Municipal Building.
