Publisher - A Calhoun County teenager was killed and his mother and stepfather injured in a two-car collision in the Stinson area Saturday night.
Joseph Padgett, 17, was a backseat passenger in a car driven by his mother, Janice Marks, 35 of Orma.
State Police said the Marks vehicle was southbound when it was hit by a northbound vehicle driven by Cody Clark, 16, of Chloe.
The accident occurred on W.Va. 16 south of Chloe around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, according to State Police spokesman Sgt. Kenneth McCord.
McCord said that according to the investigation of Cpl. D.P. Starcher of the Grantsville detachment, Clark went off the right side of the road and then overcompensated while reentering the highway and crossed the centerline.
Clark’s vehicle then hit the Marks vehicle in which Padgett was a backseat passenger. Police said he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
Padgett, suffering from severe head trauma, was flown to CAMC General Hospital where he died around 9 p.m. Sunday.
Janice Marks and her husband, Phillip Marks, who was in the front passenger seat, were both injured. Both were being treated for non-life threatening injuries at CAMC General, according to McCord. Police determined that Janice Marks was wearing a seatbelt. It had not been determined if her husband was wearing a seatbelt.
Clark, a recent state high school wrestling champion, sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital by family members. Nicholas Stevens, 17, of Big Bend was a front seat passenger in the Clark vehicle and was not injured. Both Clark and Stevens were wearing seatbelts, according to police.
McCord said State Police investigating the accident plan to meet with the Calhoun County prosecutor’s office before determining if any charges would be filed in connection with the accident.
