Roane County has its second “History Hero.”
The West Virginia Division of Culture and History has named Amma resident Jack Nida as a “History Hero” for 2008.
Nida, a 77-year-old retired businessman who also has a home in Atlanta, was among 35 people honored during a ceremony Thursday at the Cultural Center in Charleston. The award has been presented each year since 1997 to recognize those who have made grass-roots contributions to the preservation of local or regional history. Nominations come from historical, genealogical, preservation, museum, patriotic and other similar groups.
The Roane Historical Society nominated Nida based on significant contributions made during 2006. The society’s first-ever nominee, Carol Board, was named a “History Hero” a year ago.
Nida, a member of the local historical society for 12 years, compiled material for the 2007 book “Roane County,” part of the Images of America series. The book, now in its second printing, contains 204 historical photographs with notations by Nida.
The historical society was an official sponsor of the project and received profits from book sales. Nida donated his author’s royalties to the society.
A fourth-generation county resident, Nida has written three self-published books of Nida family history.
Nida was also recognized from the floor of the state Legislature as part of the 12th West Virginia History Day at the State Capitol. The day included displays and re-enactments in the rotunda of the Capitol by historical groups from around the state.
