Woman killed, man critical, after domestic dispute ends in shootings

State Police say a Walton man who apparently shot his wife and her dog Sunday called 911 before he turned the gun on himself.

Police encountered a grisly scene at the residence of Nolan “Billy” Kuhn at 9526 Charleston Rd., a short distance south of Robinson Run on U.S. 119.

Just before noon, trooper J.T. Portillo and Roane Sheriff’s Deputy Matthew “Bo” Williams responded to a call regarding shots fired at the residence.

When they arrived they found a man and a woman, both of whom had been shot in the head.

The woman, later identified as Candis Kuhn-Kane, 43, of Marmet, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was sent to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.

The man was her ex-husband, “Billy” Kuhn, 45, who lived at the residence formerly shared by the couple. He was transported to the Clendenin park and ride, picked up by a helicopter and flown to CAMC General Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. A hospital spokesman said Wednesday Kuhn remained in critical condition.

A dog that had been fatally shot was found at the woman’s feet.

Police believe the shots were fired from a rifle, according to State Police spokesman Sgt. Kent McCord. They also believe that Kuhn-Kane was shot by her ex-husband before he called 911. A call back to the house placed by a dispatcher before officers arrived went unanswered.

Police believe the shooting followed a domestic dispute.

“Billy” Kuhn filed for divorce from his wife last July. The divorce became final Dec. 12.

Authorities said extra security precautions were taken when the couple had hearings in family court because of alleged threats that had been made.

Roane Sheriff Todd Cole said police had been called to the home in the past for domestic disputes.

“I had been there before, and I’m sure other officers have been also,” Cole said.
