A Tariff man remained in the intensive care unit of a Charleston hospital this week, more than a week after he was involved in a head-on collision with a garbage truck in Kanawha County.
Adam R. Price, 21, sustained a crushed left arm, broken left shoulder, broken left hip, broken vertebrae, a concussion and multiple lacerations, according to his mother, Phyllis Price.
On Wednesday he was slated to undergo his third surgery since the accident, his mother said.
“They say he’s young and he’ll heal,” she said. “He’s a fighter.”
State Police said the accident occurred just after 1 p.m. last Tuesday, Feb. 5, on Davis Creek Road in South Charleston.
Price was driving a 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara that was involved in a head-on collision with a garbage truck owned by Waste Management Co. and driven by Phillip D. Haynes, 25, of Charleston.
State Police said the Suzuki SUV collided with the garbage truck in the middle of a slight turn, sending the garbage truck over an embankment and trapping Price inside his car before he could be removed.
“He was lucky because the fire department was right around the corner,” Price’s mother said.
Both Price and Haynes were taken to CAMC General Hospital. Haynes was treated at the hospital and released.
The road near the Davis Creek Volunteer Fire Dept. was closed for about seven hours after the accident while emergency crews cleared the scene.
Phyllis Price said her son, a 2005 Roane County High School graduate, had the oil in his vehicle changed just before the accident and was on his way to an appointment at West Virginia State University in Institute, where he planned on taking summer classes.
