A Spencer man who went looking for his cattle never returned after his ATV rolled on top of him.
Earl Allen Jenkins Sr., 59, of 3551 Ripley Rd. was pronounced dead Sunday at the scene of the rollover, according to his son.
Earl Jenkins Jr. said his father went out around 8 a.m. in search of the missing cattle.
“The last time I saw him was about fifteen (minutes) after 10,” he said. “I took him a bucket of grain in case he found the cattle.”
Members of Spencer-Roane Volunteer Fire Dept. joined the search after being contacted just after 11 a.m.
A neighbor assisting with the search discovered Jenkins around noon, his son said.
The younger Jenkins said his father apparently came upon a slip on a hillside that could not be seen because it was covered by tall grass. The ATV hit the slip and rolled backwards, landing on top of the driver.
Jenkins spent most of his life in Smithers and was retired from the Elkem Metals plant in Alloy.
After retiring, he bought property outside Spencer eight or nine years ago and discovered he loved to farm.
“Farming is all he talked about and all he thought about,” his son said.
The younger Jenkins said his father died only a few months after winning a long battle with cancer.
The elder Jenkins was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2001, about six months before his wife died of the same ailment.
He underwent a bone marrow transplant in February.
“He had only been home from the hospital about two or two and a half months,” his son said. “He was completely cancer-free.”
