A public meeting has been scheduled for next week to discuss starting a regional farmers’ market at Amma.
The meeting will be Tuesday, May 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Amma Community and Senior Center, the proposed site for the market.
WVU Extension Service offices in Roane, Calhoun and Clay counties are working to develop the market, according to Brandy Brabham, an Extension agent working in Roane and Calhoun counties.
“Access from (I-79) allows producers in the area to market their produce as well as other farm fresh products to a larger consumer base,” Brabham said. “It also allows local residents better access to fresh fruits and vegetables.”
Brabham said interest from vendors would be crucial to the success of the market. Home gardeners, greenhouse operators, flower gardeners and fresh egg, honey and molasses producers are being sought to participate.
Non-gardeners are sought to sell items such as homemade baked goods including breads, pies, cakes and cookies. No flea market type items will be permitted.
Brabham said 4-H and FFA participants are also encouraged to attend the meeting.
The market is expected to start in July, with tentative dates set for Friday evenings.
Potential vendors must have an approved application in the WVU Extension office prior to selling items at the market.
Those who would like more information may call Brabham at 927-0975.
The effort recently received a boost by being approved for a Specialty Crops Grant from the W.Va. Dept. of Agriculture for promotions and signage. Specialty crops include fruits and vegetables, nuts, nursery crops, floriculture, honey and molasses.
