Community building discussed

Reedy Town Council members hope to keep any more unwanted water out of the Reedy Community Building.

At their regular monthly meeting Thursday, council members discussed recent flooding that impacted the building, which also needs a new roof.

Council member Wilma Wilson told fellow members Peggy Freeland, Kathy Salvucci, Frank Vannoy and Connie Wilson that water from last week’s flooding got into the kitchen and back part of the building, but not into the front meeting room.

Council members voted to hire someone to clean the flooded portions of the building with bleach. The project should be done before June 14, which is the next date the building is rented.

Mayor Sam Salvucci and Recorder Neri McKenzie did not attend the meeting.

Connie Wilson also suggested the town offer the Reedy Volunteer Fire Dept. a donation to wash mud from the streets and sidewalks. Council members agreed.

The Reedy Waterworks office, where council meetings are held, is located next door to the community building and did not take on any floodwater.

Council members also discussed the community building roof, which has been repaired in the past but still has leaks.

Connie Wilson made a motion, seconded by Wilma Wilson, to set up a fund to begin saving money to put a new roof on the building. Council members approved the motion and also agreed to look into holding a fundraiser for the project.

Kathy Salvucci said if enough money was raised, the town would not have to raise the rent on the building, which stands at $50 a day, or $35 for half a day.

“People use the building a lot,” according to Salvucci, who chaired the meeting in her husband’s absence.

Tim Meeks of the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Council was scheduled to attend the meeting for a public hearing on a grant proposal that could generate funds to repaint the town’s water tower.

Meeks, whose office is in Parkersburg, could not make it to the meeting because of flooding in Elizabeth. Salvucci said the hearing would take place in conjunction with the next council meeting Thursday, July 3.

Salvucci said she planned to attend a meeting with the board that awards the grants in Charleston on June 27 and encouraged other members to attend as well. The proposal has been turned down three times in the past.

Council members also briefly discussed a proposal approved earlier to have a town-wide yard sale on Saturday, Aug. 2.

In a water board meeting that followed the regular meeting, members reviewed new daily work logs submitted by utility worker Jimmie Starcher.
